Ahaha, NAACP held a protest at the podium and shut down the meeting. They're singing "We Shall Overcome" I shit you not. Ahahahaha.

Once again, I would like to reiterate a question I asked earlier:If we don't bus based on race and this isn't about race but "socio-economic diversity", why is all the rhetoric about returning to the days of segregation?[Edited on June 15, 2010 at 8:09 PM. Reason : asdf]
6/15/2010 8:08:29 PM
The NAACP is a conservative organization in that regard. But they're right, the only chance of any of those kids getting out of the ghetto...is to get them out of the ghetto.
6/15/2010 8:10:02 PM
^^ Because the NAACP will turn anything into a race issue if you give them the chance.
6/16/2010 10:07:09 AM
i still want to know where these nasty slum like high schools exist in Wake County, where all of the black kids are going to magically be assigned.
6/16/2010 10:09:21 AM
SE Raleigh High
6/16/2010 10:42:24 AM
its practically a brand new, top of the line facility. students failing there are not doing so because it is an inadequate or unsafe place to learn.

LOL at "ghetto" wake county
6/16/2010 10:19:28 PM
Have you ever been around the St. Aug area? I had to do some canvassing in that area back in 2004. Things might be better now but I would definitely classify that area as ghetto.
6/17/2010 1:16:41 AM
I used to live off of Bloodworth. it is not "ghetto" and the neighborhood there is a lot more diverse than you would think (meaning white kids would be going to the same schools). there are pockets of unsavory characters roaming about, but the area as a whole could never be confused with the inner city of any other major city in this country.
6/17/2010 10:13:32 AM
6/17/2010 2:06:19 PM
^^ Oh I'll definitely give you that Raleigh's poor neighborhoods are a lot better than say, Harlem or Skid Row, but there are still areas that I wouldn't want to stick around for too long. Also, is the Shaw University area really considered bad? The area around Raleigh Blvd is much much worse imo.[Edited on June 17, 2010 at 10:28 PM. Reason : s]
6/17/2010 10:26:55 PM
^ I dunno... i think DaBird might be right that Raleigh doesn't have poor people.
6/17/2010 10:34:42 PM
yeah thats exactly what I said. people started throwing around the word 'ghetto' when applicable to Wake County and I called them out. i guess poor people are eternally fucked. evidently they are incapable of learning anything or making something of themselves without the proximity of the evil rich. shame.[Edited on June 17, 2010 at 11:04 PM. Raleigh definitely has what most people would define as "ghetto" areas. What youre arguing is like saying that the US doesn't have any ghettos, because we don't have zinc shacks like you see in Haiti. And poverty is definitely cyclical. This is a well established concept, that practically no intelligent person would dispute. One of the alleged benefits of having diverse schools is that it sometimes can broaden ones perceptions of what they are capable of, that is outside of the small bubble of a single neighborhood.
6/17/2010 11:09:24 PM
6/17/2010 11:59:14 PM
Lol at the spoiled brats who think that less-than-perfect neighborhoods constitute "ghettos".You guy are fucking idiots.OMG! THERE'S NO PRETTY FLOWERS IN THE FRONT YARD AND LOTS OF BROWN PEOPLE STANDING AROUND! I MUST BE IN THE GHETTO!!
6/18/2010 6:23:38 AM

^I was waiting for someone to mention that place -- it was some kind of housing project, right?Still not a ghetto [noun]. If you're saying "It's ghetto." [adjective], then sure -- it's like a ghetto.
6/18/2010 12:03:00 PM
^^^ If you're sure it's not so bad, then my suggestion should be easy as cake. You could turn it into a video blog to share with the rest of us.
6/18/2010 12:05:28 PM
^I used to deliver pizza there. I know. You're exaggerating, or spoiled, or something. It may be "too ghetto" for your taste, but it's not a ghetto.
6/18/2010 12:49:50 PM
Again, I'd like to see you spend an entire evening at that intersection. Just one. It's no big deal, right?
6/18/2010 12:52:09 PM
Because Webster's defines it as:ghetto n.. , pl. , -tos , or -toes: a place that wolfpackgrrr thinks you don't want to spend the night.
6/18/2010 1:00:40 PM
one corner does not a ghetto make.
6/18/2010 1:03:53 PM
I just picked that corner for its ease of access more than anything. Perhaps you would prefer Raleigh Blvd and New Bern Ave?I actually do think you would happily spend a night chilling out there, so I'm not sure why you're so opposed to the idea.

6/18/2010 1:21:26 PM
It'd be hard for me to hang out there since I live in a different country ^^ Like I said before, I don't know much about the Bloodworth area but I didn't think it was that bad. I just know that when I used to deliver medical supplies in the Raleigh Blvd. area I saw some really fucked up shit going on in that area
6/19/2010 12:27:07 AM
well i am not saying i didnt see some crazy shit or that there were/are zero bad people who hang around down there, i am just saying that compared to almost everywhere else its pretty damn tame.
6/19/2010 5:14:59 PM
6/20/2010 7:28:15 PM
Things like a dude hanging out his window shooting at the SWAT team rushing his apartment, drug deals happening on the street corner like they were selling hot dogs at the State Fair, a woman being dragged by her hair by some guy, things like that. This was a decade ago now though so maybe that area has cleaned itself up.
6/20/2010 7:53:58 PM
Shit, I've seen most of that on Brent Rd.
6/20/2010 8:36:37 PM
1337 b4k4, I already answered your question. I can't really gauge your point either...it's just you repeating some shit because you thought it was smart when it's really just cute.DaBird, this business about Raleigh being an integrated city is bullshit. I dunno if you're purposefully lying or just mistaken...maybe because you don't expect to see a black family in an affluent neighborhood, you tend to exaggerate their numbers when you do see them? Anyway, few non-white families does not make an integrated neighborhood. And, seriously, Raleigh neighborhoods are especially not diverse when it comes to race and class...besides accommodating growth, why did you think we were bussing anyway? You think we were sending busses into your imaginary integrated neighborhoods and busing kids around just for the fuck of it?Also, one million dollars to the first genius in here who manages to connect the way we ran our schools to the fact that our "bad" neighborhoods aren't as bad as they could be.Jesus Christ, guys.

6/21/2010 4:37:16 AM
In this thread,...closet racists use "ghetto" to describe predominately-black neighborhoods with jaywalkers and drug-dealers.
6/21/2010 8:56:09 AM
^ whatever makes you feel superior For me it comes down to crime rates in an area which I feel give a good indicator of the environment a child is living in. Doesn't really matter what the majority race in that neighborhood is. Just as I wouldn't choose to live on Raleigh Blvd, I wouldn't choose to live on Kent Road again. There's only so many times I want to listen to some drunk college kid shooting his gun off in the middle of the night. One thing I recommend all people who are sincerely interested in the WCPSS do is volunteer tutoring at some of the elementary and middle schools. I did volunteer ESL and grammar tutoring for awhile and some of the stories those kids/teachers could tell you were just sad

6/21/2010 11:28:49 AM
Actually my degree is in political science Ghetto as it's used in American English is a pretty arbitrary thing anyway. I guess if you want to be picky, we don't have areas in Raleigh where predominantly Jews live. But anyhoo, like I said before, I really recommend people on either side of the fence get into the schools as volunteers so they can get a hands-on look at what goes on in the schools. I think too often in these sorts of debates people don't actually go and take an intimate look at what they're debating in the first place.
