haha what blog are you quoting there
1/28/2010 1:40:01 PM
its not a blog, it's our company's meteorologist -- everytime i post this kinda quoted stuff it's coming from his emails
1/28/2010 1:40:45 PM
yeah it does read like inside info
1/28/2010 1:44:37 PM
i never said it was insider info, just that i wasn't quoting a blog
1/28/2010 1:45:50 PM
your company employs a meteorologist?
1/28/2010 1:48:45 PM
we employ 2 meteorologists. one in this office (Cary, NC) and the other in our main office in Indianapolis.]
1/28/2010 1:49:11 PM
for what purpose? just to let you know what the drive to and from work will be like?
1/28/2010 1:49:44 PM
my industry relies heavily on weather forecasts/trends/changes to be able to do our job properly
1/28/2010 1:51:01 PM
oic, makes sense then.good to know that you can do other things with a meteorology degree besides being a weather man.
1/28/2010 1:51:44 PM
oh they're still weathermen i mean, they're always forecasting stuff. they just aren't on TV predicting snow. they're at a desk on a trading floor sending out emails predicting snow. ]
1/28/2010 1:53:27 PM
how hard is it to be a meteorologist really? i mean, with the internet it seems that just about anyone could make fairly accurate predictions
1/28/2010 1:56:20 PM
i agree i mean, you gotta learn what it is you're lookin' at to be able to predict trends and stuff. but yes, most websites do all the thinking for you these days.
1/28/2010 1:57:34 PM
I could totally get up on TV and say "Well, depending on how this storm tracks and which model you go by, we could expect anywhere from 1-12 inches of snow". Which is pretty much all my local weather guy does.
1/28/2010 2:00:36 PM
That's why it's hilarious to me that Greg Fischel takes his job so seriously, and calls himself a Chief Meteorologist, and people buy into that. He's no different than any other weather guesser.
1/28/2010 2:04:47 PM
I just love how vague they are up until the point that the storm is over us and dumping snow."The possibility of significant snow accumulation". OK, let's break that down. So there is a possibility. Define possibility. Is it more on the side of probably, or more on the side of not likely? Next, define significant. Two inches might be significant to some people, while others wouldn't consider anything under 6 inches to be significant.I think I am going to look into becoming a weatherman

1/28/2010 2:09:46 PM
WRAL is now saying: North Carolina is bracing for a major storm that could bring nearly a foot of snow and several inches of ice in some areas. The storm is expected to begin Friday night and last throughout most of Saturday. They're saying Raleigh will get 12".
1/28/2010 2:10:10 PM
^^^yeah, that and when they say things like "well main forecasting issue here is whether it snows or rains/cloudy or sunny/windy or calm". yes, i think that's always the issue in forecasting.[Edited on January 28, 2010 at 2:11 PM. Reason : ]

We're gonna get fishel'd
1/28/2010 2:16:41 PM
My roommate texted me saying he saw they were starting to move the snow line slowly north again, which he claims means no snow for us as usual lol
1/28/2010 2:25:04 PM
Is Elizabeth Gardner to be trusted?
1/28/2010 2:25:35 PM
i wont buy it til the 6 o'clock news. until fishel himself allows himself to be filmed in front of the graphic I wont trust that he believes it.
1/28/2010 2:35:27 PM
no one on wral is to be trusted. Now we're gonna get Garshel'd.
1/28/2010 2:36:08 PM
Won't really have a good idea until 9 or 10pm tonight. I think Triangle south will be getting some bad news about that time.VA border north to a line between Roanoke and Richmond will be happy.[Edited on January 28, 2010 at 2:41 PM. Reason : if they want snow]

^That right there is why broadcast journalists pretending to be mets give actual meteorologists a bad name. And why everyone says it's so easy to be a met. They have a graphic with "guess" on it. Indeed.
1/28/2010 3:06:02 PM
lol, it says guess right there! She's not even trying!
1/28/2010 3:14:18 PM
Could they pick any more heinous colors to create precipitation gradients with? Being red green color blind, those pinks and purples and off colors of blue-green-whatever-it-is are really hard to distinguish between.
1/28/2010 3:28:12 PM
people on the WRAL chat going on right now are downright ANGRY.i can't believe how worked up people get about weather.

Without external knowledge on meteorology graphs, there actually appear to be two ways to read that legend
