why was it inflated in the first place?

wouldnt it have had to be inflated that day or the night before considering the weather there?

why would you inflate something with all that helium when you arent even working on it, and what kind of work would he be doing on that contraption that would require it to be inflated with helium anyway?

not adding up to a kids mistake at all"

oxygen at 10k? are you serious? Tell that to the residents of Leadville, CO - elevation 10,500 ft. They'd be interested to know that they have to stock oxygen bottles for tourists. When I spent the summer working near Leadville I got used to the altitude in about 2-3 weeks.

actually, 10k' is high enough to induce some hypoxia effects. you legally are supposed to be on O2 if you're flying an airplane at or above that cabin altitude.

it will take you a LONG time to get any significant amount of hypoxia at that altitude (probably an hour or two, at least).

^^ Media whore dad made up a story about his kid being taken up in a home made balloon. Cops/rescue workers/general public/media outlets go crazy and blow the story out of proportion. Kid is found under a box in the attic a few hours later.

the dad probably wanted to make sure that his balloon was tracked... didn't want to lose it, so make up a story so news crews and LE will follow it and he knows where it eventually lands. Amazing that the kid gets magically found within minutes of the dad finding out where the balloon's landing point was.

"A tin foil hat is a piece of headgear made from one or more sheets of aluminium foil or similar material. Alternatively it may be a conventional hat lined with foil. Some people wear the hats in the belief that they act to shield the brain from such influences as electromagnetic fields, or against mind control and/or mind reading.

The concept of wearing a tin foil hat for protection from such threats has become a popular stereotype and term of derision; the phrase serves as a byword for paranoia and is associated with conspiracy theorists.

The reasons for their use include the supposed prevention of perceived harassment from governments, spies or paranormal beings. These draw on the stereotypical images of mind control operating by ESP or technological means, like microwave radiation. The effectiveness of tin foil hats is disputable; however, the belief in their necessity is popularly associated with paranoia or mental illness.[1]"

Holy shit this whole debacle just restored my faith in humanity a bit.

The fact that this family was fucking with what amounted to the entire world just for the sake of a big hoax... there's something almost beautiful about it.

Yeah, they wasted a lot of rescue personnel resources who could have been doing something real, and I do feel bad about that... though there is something positive to be said for keeping every mainstream "news" outlet busy for however long this mess took.

DISCLAIMER: All that said... I didn't actually watch a moment of this, nor have I actually seen any of the people involved. All my information on the subject has come from the first, second, and last pages of this thread, plus a silver balloon picture. For all I know, my assessment is completely of base, and these people may in fact be just plain useless assholes (as opposed to semi-intelligent awesome assholes).

"most people die from flood waters because of the area affected by the rain of a hurricane is so large. The eye and the winds of the eyewall on hit such a small area relative to the size of the entire hurricane. In a cat3 hurricane you get much more than just shingles. windows, rooves and entire structures begin to fail and blow out."

Yeah this is wrong... The floods come from storm surge, in the US it's greatest in the part of the storm just to the east. That's where it is most intense due to the rotation pushing the water inward.

"and skydiving is safe"

It depends on how you run the numbers. Ie if you do it by "time in air" or number of jumps. I used to rationalize it as safe, because most accidents are 100% preventable and stem from bad judgment. Kind of the same with car accidents too, but that being said I know way more dead skydivers than I know dead motorists who don't skydive. I cringe every time I hear newer jumpers say that.
