^ thought about switching to a cream? The soap that I used to use was sold out so I decided to try TOBS cream and love it. Doesn't last quite as long but I really prefer it now.

I've got TOBS Lavender creme and some T&H creme. Like the soap a little better. My bro lives in italy and i've been trying to see if he can find any proraso in a local shop.

I wanna know why it's so hard to make a razor that's easy to clean. My hair is thick and gets stuck behind the blade and have to unclog it every three strokes.

unless you're referring to cartridge razors? if you are, they clog up because of how close the blades are...they can't make multi-blade razors with large gaps because they'll cut you

why don't you just get C.O Bigelow from Bath & Body Works? It's the exact same thing. It's made in Italy by Proraso, and even has their name on the back. Just stamped and logo'd for B&BW.



Do you guys have any issues with your creams drying out in their tub?

My brother lives in Napoli (Italy) and I've been dying to try some Proraso. I FB'd him last month and asked him about getting me some. He said he's been dying for some certain type of chewing tobacco and said if I bought him 10 cans of it, he would buy as much Proraso as the tobacco cost. The next day, I had the tobacco and shipped it two him two days later.

Every week since then I've asked him the status of mailing me my Proraso, and he finally emailed me this week about it.

It's been a month.

I'm running low on TOBS and T&H.

I finally ran out of Mach 3 blades a few days ago -- from the 20-pack that I got from Sam's sometime last year.

Went to Wal-Mart to pick up some more and HOLY CRAP they are expensive. I grabbed some short-term disposables to use in the meantime, but I believe I will be transitioning to wet shaving soon...

I finally got stopped by TSA for carrying my DE on a recent trip to Vegas. This was the 4th or so flight that I took it on and the first time anything happened. Oddly, the guy acted like he couldn't understand why I couldn't shave without the blade. I ended up buying some kind of gillette while I was out there. Man, I really forgot how bad those things are.

I don't use shaving cream while shaving. Hot water+short fast strokes=clean shaven. I cut myself next to never.

I'll add something relative and say that Dr. Bronners Soaps aren't too bad for shaving. All Natural and Organic too.

So I'm all out of TOBS and Tabac and T&H. My can't-get-off-his-ass brother still hasn't sent me my Proraso, and I had to get that cheap stuff from Walmart.

It does the job. And it's cheap. So I'm not going to complain.

For about a week, while I was trying to conserve the TOBS and T&H, I switched to Cremo Cream that I've had for about a year. I did it in the shower, and the directions suggest to use the hottest water possible on your face.

I can stand pretty hot water on my face (almost scalding). But not on the other, more sensitive areas (read: junk).

And not seeing anything (Cremo is pretty translucent compared with real shaving soap) made it difficult to ensure I was getting every inch.

So I broke down and bought the cheap stuff. Again, I'm not going to complain.

And now I am moving to Connecticut and won't be here even if my c-g-o-h-a brother sends me my crap.

BTW, anyone know of any good gear shops in CT?

why are you waiting on him to send you proraso when i've mentioned several times in this thread that Bath & Bodyworks sells it under the rebranded name of CO Bigelow? It's Proraso, made by Proraso in Italy, with B&BW name on it. just go get a tube there.

I purchased Merkur HD 34c for all the men in my family but I want to personalize them with their initials on the top. The only thing I am hesitant about is that the engraving might rust. Does anyone have any experience/advice?

a simple search on badger and blade looks like it can be done but the hardened steel may be too hard for basic engraving tools. you may need to seek out a laser engraver. if you can't get the razor engraved you could look into getting a brush or something with their names instead.

I also use a 34c with Derby's or Feathers. I prefer the Feathers though, if I can manage not to nick my face with that ninja sharpness.

I thought the 34c was chrome-plated as well. I'm afraid that engraving will take away the chrome and allow it to rust.

As far as blades, I really like the Merkur's but they don't have deals on them like the Derbys and there is not that much difference between the two imo. I tried the Feathers and they are stupid sharp.

i'd be more concerned about a poor engraving job causing the chrome to chip away at the engraving's edges

Every now and then I get a terrible case of razor burn on my neck. I don't know how to prevent it either.

I've been using a Merkur 34c with feather blades and CO Bigelow shaving cream.

^that was one of the main reasons i started shaving this way. Is it your technique around the neck? Perhaps it's your pre and post shave routine? Are you shaving after a hot shower to soften the hairs? How about post shave? A good post shave routine like dousing your neck with Witch Hazel and then splashing some aftershave should help.

I shave directly after a hot shower. For my neck, I only do one downward pass. I use witch Hazel and then aftershave. However, I may not be sufficiently heating my neck, as mentioned. And I don't use an aftershave that contains alcohol. Perhaps an aftershave with alcohol could help.

i also shave right after a shower (and then splash hot water from the faucet before lathering up)...it's weird because sometimes it's a great shave and sometimes it's not (with more hair tugging), though i've never had the irritation i had with disposable razors

i use the cheaper witch hazel, which has alcohol...partly because i'm cheap, but just as much because the alcohol will kill any bacteria on my neck

speaking of bacteria, i've recently been getting some tiny pimples on my neck not long after shaving (i never had pimples as a teenager)...i finally decided to start dipping the head of my razor (blade and all) into alcohol after shaving and that seems to have stopped it

About once a week, and usually when I change my blade, I let the blade and razor soak in Barbicide while I'm in the shower. I'm sure alcohol will work just as well.

As for the Proraso...I'm going to have my brother send it to my folks in FL...then they can send it to me when I get to CT.

Good DE. Make sure you get him a good soap/cream and aftershave. I've been told by some that C.O. Bigelow at B&BW has some, but I live in Hawaii and we haven't any here ( Jeep).

Feather blades are awesome for SOME people (myself included), but I'd honestly recommend a less sharp blade if this is his first time using a safety razor. It typically takes a few times shaving with it before you can actually shave without cutting yourself a half dozen times (or more...ask me how I know... )

Once you get the technique down, feather blades will likely give him a nice shave, but until then, his face is likely to look like he shaved with a cheese grater haha.

I'd pick up a pack of Derby blades maybe to start out with.

He probably wont need a whole ton of Derby's...just a few to use until he gets the technique down. I'm sure he'll pick it up quickly.

Also, you might want to get him a sample pack of different razors...a good way to find which razor is best for him.

Alright, couldn't think of anything else I wanted for Christmas within the 'budget', so as a long time reader/lurker in this thread, I was curious about getting a DE razor.

About a year ago, I had an small case of pseudofolliculitis using my Mach 3 and then a gilette fusion. Dermatologist told me to never use more than a 2-blade system, that Mach (Insert # here) razors were terrible for your skin, and that 'old-timey razors' were the best thing that men could use. I've been using single blade disposables for the last year becuase they're cheap and honestly I didn't know where to get an 'old-timey razor' (Google, I know, but never cared enough and thought the disposables were as good as it gets). The disposables are not a very good shave (Both skin-wise and in closeness), but at least no more pseudofolliculitis. Still give me razor burn and/or ingrown hairs sometimes...

So I asked for a Merkur 34c for Christmas and I've been impressed (Got the blade tester pack, using the Merkur blade at the moment...will go to feathers last). It's much much closer of a shave without the skin irritation/razor burn of the shitty disposables. Used it twice now and haven't managed to cut myself at all, either (Doing 2 downward passes).

The fiancee loves it. There is a really noticeable difference in closeness and shave quality. I admit that it sounded ridiculously cliche at first, but you really can tell a difference.

Some people think that technology always makes things better. In some instances (like shaving), it's not the case.

I first purchased a Merkur Hefty Classic DE and used it for three months before the metal started to wear away on the head. I had a gold one I found at an antique store and used that, but the cap on the bottom was falling off all of the time.

When my grandmother died last January, I went to FL for the family and stopped by a few antique stores and picked up five DE's for $25 total. After cleaning them all, I tried them.

Now I use one of the gilette DE's that's probably 30+ years old.

Even in shaving, new isn't always best.

yeah, my 40-50-year old gillettes are my go-to razors...i take them when i travel because they're consistent and the smallest/lightest

I got a tub of the proraso shave soap (Not sure it's the 'Proraso Green' everyone talks about becuase it's a white tub? I know there's a green tub too?) I saw alot of you recommend it, and I plan to go get some "C O Bigelow" when that's done.

Is there any decent aftershave that can be found at a CVS/Wal-Mart/Grocery Store, etc? I picked up some "Pinaud Clubman" from CVS just to give it a shot. It's OK. I saw someone say they used Aqua Velva. Anything else you'd recommend that I can pick up locally? I guess I could always order online, it's just nice to be able to run out and get some. I've never been a big aftershave person with regular razors, but these things get so close I probably should use some. I'm interested if anyone has found anything good that's widely available.

My next thing is to find some kind of mug that works for shaving. Can't find one with the right depth at the moment. I just have some crappy $8 boar hair brush from CVS, too, which might be nice to upgrade

The Wal-Mart's in Fuquay and Holly Springs both do not have the $10 brush/mug kit I saw alot of you recommended....at least not that I could find in the shaving/deodorant aisles
