I still can't install this shit, but I think I'm getting closer. I think there's a problem with my board and 4GB of RAM. http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-installation-upgrade/1388-windows-7-slow-install-wont-boot-2.htmlThe guy has the same exact board that I do and he's having the exact same problem. he took 2 GB out and it works great. I upped the voltage on the RAM to try to resolve performance problems on the suggestion from OCZ, but I threw the Windows 7 disk in last night and it still fucking wouldn't install. I'll take 2 sticks out and try it though I'd really like to use the RAM I purchased.

Installing now. Wee! Lousy BIOS upgrade I neglected. Good thing I installed my old floppy drive.

i'm gonna delete windows 7 unless there is a good reason not to. i play around on it and it's got neat stuff, but it's not everyday stable. that's funny since vista isn't what i would call stable either.
2/12/2009 9:41:03 PM
^Seriously, you don't find Win7 stable? I've yet to have it crash ... well except to prove to myself that that font size increase would actually blue screen it I'm a glutton for blue screens.
2/13/2009 12:27:51 AM
I can't get windows media center to work. I've never used it before, but I keep getting the"an error was encountered while configuring your computer for use with this extender"I've done every step imaginable to fix it, anyone have any luck?
2/13/2009 12:52:59 AM
much more stable than vista 64bit...MUCH MOREespecially witha overclocked p4d 930vista bsod me all the time..,not win 7although some of my apps dont work
2/13/2009 2:19:53 AM
I've had a lot less compatibility issues in win 7 32bit for some reason. i keep getting installers that crash in 64bit so i've went back to 32bit on the machines i have it on
2/13/2009 8:21:14 AM
So far, I've only had a handful of issues installing:chrome - had to change the path to the shortcut.lightscribe - had to hex edit the msi to look for VersionNT=601logitech setpoint - had to hunt down 64 bit versionWoW installed without a hitch and is fucking fast. NVidia drivers installed without problem, though they are missing some functionality from the XP drivers. AVG installed without issue.

so what's the overall consensus on Windows 7?better than vista?less bloat than vista?less footprint than vista?compatibility issues?
2/13/2009 3:27:22 PM
better than vista? yesless bloat than vista? yesless footprint than vista? generally speaking, yescompatibility issues? yes, but it handles them better than vista, and it's still beta

I've only been using it for a day, but I'd probably buy it since I don't have Vista. I haven't encountered the bugs that people are complaining about but I haven't been looking for them either.

couple of things to keep in mind as far as "footprint" goes. The Win7 beta is the "ultimate" SKU. This means that the Volume Shadow Service is installed, and on by default. VSS is one of the most unheard of features in Vista, mostly because it ain't in the home SKU's, which is what most people have.In a nutshell, right click on a file or folder, look at the "Previous Versions" tab, and you can open, view, copy or restore previous versions of the file/folder. It's REALLY cool stuff. Very similar to "Time Machine" on OSX, except VSS came first, and it works invisibly

a couple of other interesting bits, for the server guys:Win7 supports native booting from vhd. So if you happen to have a hyper-v server, you can use it to deploy win7 images to physical machines. Makes a lot of deployment and multi-boot scenarios much easier, because you dont have to worry about physical disk partitioning anymore. And, along those lines, you can symlink external, network and physical drives (this may have been possible previously, but I heard it specifically mentioned for Win7), which makes VHD deployment even more powerful (symlink to a profile space, save VHD, redeploy images when needed, without upsetting the profile).

Anyone have a link of where to download it now? I can't find any semi-legit places. I'm looking for the x64 version, btw.
2/16/2009 1:08:29 PM
what do you mean by semi-legit? microsoft is the only legit place and they aren't letting you download it anymoreuse thepiratebay.org or isohunt.com ..it's all over both of them
2/16/2009 1:38:32 PM
the newer beta is out. get on dat. it's on piratebay.

I started with the original cracked ISO (first 7000 release). I guess I'm just unsure that I'm properly updated with windows update? Also Windows Media Center isn't working on my desktop and I've exhausted every possibility. It works fine on my laptop though.[Edited on February 16, 2009 at 5:31 PM. Reason : f]

^^ I would highly advise *against* downloading builds after 7000, unless you are getting them directly from Microsoft as a partner.Build 7000 is fully supported. You can get windows updates for any security or feature functionality that is needed to be fixed. Once you install a build beyond that, there is no guarantee that anything will work. That's fine if you are just running a VM to screw around on, but like many of you guys, I am running Win7 as a regular OS and I'll be sticking with build7000 until another public release hits. That should, hopefully, tell you something.^ Why in the hell did you CRACK a beta of Windows 7? There's a very very good chance you have malware built in on boot, and it could easily be the cause of your WMC problems. Even on the torrents you can find the original, unaltered ISO's for the 7000 beta.
2/16/2009 6:04:43 PM
I didn't mean cracked, really. MCE didn't work on the desktop but it worked on the laptop, so I know that the copy wasn't at fault.Just did a clean install and MCE works, but WoW won't let itself patch

http://lifehacker.com/5154968/windows-7-seemingly-blocks-audio-captureWindows 7 Seemingly Blocks Audio Capture [Drm]by Kevin PurdyOne rather feisty (and—surprise!—Linux-savvy) Slashdot reader writes about his DRM discoveries in Windows 7. Along with complaints about seemingly big-software-friendly firewall access and registration DLLs, the author's chief discovery is that Windows 7 doesn't allow for any kind of software audio capture. In other words, if you've got one application playing sound, Windows 7 doesn't seem to allow you to use your same sound card to also grab the audio from that app.Windows 7 testers, are you seeing similar findings? I don't trust my ThinkPad's built-in sound to be a reliable testing rig, so let us know if you're also blocked from in-system recording in the comments.true?
2/17/2009 11:29:31 PM
^that's entirely a driver issue. It has absolutely nothing to do with Windows 7.

^^ Is there any way to make windows show the size of folders in details view? It's actually maybe 11-12GB. On a 17GB partition, only about 1.7GB are free. The laptop has 2GB of RAM.

if its posted on slashdot its almost always 100% wrong. Dont ever get your fucking news there.

I've had that association error with FF many times in XP over the past few years. Is there anyway to access my XP system drive will in Win 7 explorer?

drive will?

Still want to know why my dual-boot 7 at home is dead. It just sits there forever attempting to fix the startup when I choose 7, but nothing ever happens.Guess its no big deal since it looks like we are buying Macbooks at work now and phasing out all of our Dell machines within 5 years.

It's definitely not here. My Windows 7 drive (which is C: in Win 7) shows up in XP, but my XP drive which is C: in XP does not show up in Win 7.edit: never mind, I think it's because before I installed 7, I partitioned one of my HDs as some arbitrary drive letter in XP, but Win7 is not recognizing the XP drive because it's already C:. Carry on :/edit2: I'm so retarded, I didn't think to just run diskmgmt.msc and assign the XP drive to another letter. Carry on again.[Edited on February 20, 2009 at 8:12 PM. Reason : .]

Tyler, I had SP3 installed prior to installing Windows 7. I keep it up to date automatically. The OS installed and ran a few times with no issue. I have AV on both, Defender and Vexira, and have run full scans with Malwarebytes, Defender, Vexira, & Spybot to check and see if that was the problem. Hence why I'm a bit confused by this.
2/22/2009 8:25:09 PM
^Yeah that's a really oddball/rare issue. You're the first person I've seen who's ended up with a junked install after successfully running.Did you install anti-virus on Win7 in the first few boots?
