While I agree completely with not booing your team, the "you couldn't do better" argument is one of my biggest pet peeves ever; it's a cop out.

It doesn't matter whether or not you or I could do any better. In being a member of a major college athletics team, a player is subject to the criticism of his supporters. His full ride is funded in part by my dollars, I am allowed to voice my concerns in a manner I see fit. I think it's dumb and immature to hysterically boo any player for anything, and anyone who does shouldn't be taken seriously to begin with, but if Daniel Evans is shitting the bed, I'm allowed to boo him. It isn't disrespectful, it isn't rude, it's a kick in the fucking ass; don't play quarterback like a 12 year-old girl and you won't get booed.

While I don't believe in booing college athletes, the "you couldn't do any better" is an argument that I wish would just go away. Hey I'm not a politician, but I sure as hell can criticize them when they do stupid things (i.e. the Charlotte city council not making the Bobcats pay for the off duty police directing traffic which is pretty much the norm everywhere else).

I normally say don't boo college kids and I didn't boo after the first drive, but that was some of the most inept play on offense I've ever seen. My hope was the boos would make Daniel go fetal so that we'd finally send another QB out there.

If anything...boo the coach who is playing them...I don't think Evans or any other athelete who is playing bad is doing it on purpose. The ones who deserve to be booed are the lazy ones or the ones who make stupid penalties or are sandbagging shit.

Quote :
"^^^ so you would rather blindly support a player/players that have no business being on the field rather than let them know how they are playing and let someone else get in there and give it a go... it was obvious that evans was not getting the job done"

This is ignorance...you think you need to let a player know they aren't playing well? Or do you think your boos influence coaching decisions? Be serious

On the up side, it was encouraging watching our the young and inexperienced WRs show us they can make some plays.

You don't get booed unless you play at or below the caliber of Daniel Evans. And if a guy sucks that badly, I'd rather him not be recruited in the first place.

^Really. When Evans started Saturday I thought "I'll be ecstatic if it's just and incomplete pass." Let alone a completed pass to out team. That though stayed with me for what? A grand total of 2 downs.

yeah, fans who pay good money and invest a lot of time in following their school and their athletic programs have no right to boo when they play like shit

it's not just the losing that is a problem, it's the fact that it's embarrassing... and if there were recruits there, they probably knew the boos were because the team was playing like shit, not because we're a bunch of meanie fans

^^So, how does Daniel Evans not being recruited subtract from the point he was trying to make... which I think was "If you suck and don't like to be booed at, don't come to NCSU 'cause you'll be booed."

Daniel Evans was recruited. It was his brother Andrew who walked-on. Now the actual recruitment though didn't take long. We probably spent a grand total of a week truly recruiting him and then formally offering him a scholarship. I think he said in an interview he had an offer from Wake and a few smaller schools that weren't BCS schools (SMU was one of them iirc) and a few D-IAA schools.

Evans was the fall back when we didn't land Brent Schaeffer.

Giving him a scholarship was kind of like striking out with the hot girl at the bar and settling for the one with a good personality.

Fine, I don't think many people have a problem with that...boo coaches and boo players who aren't playing hard. But really, what good does booing (and not just booing, but some of the crap that comes out of people's mouthes is ridiculous) your own team do? The guy loves NC State (probably more than a lot of people here), he's a good teammate and person and he was put in the game. He hasn't performed, he's just not good enough, so be it.

So playing bad, not having a strong enough arm, and not being able to make the right reads means someone isn't playing hard? No, it just means they don't have the physical tools or talent to get the job done. If word came out that Daniel wasn't watching game film or something like it'd be different.

You wouldn't jump and say a basketball player who went 1-10 from the floor on a cosistent basis wasn't playing hard, you'd just say he can't shoot.

i do hate the "you couldnt do any better argument" and agree 100% that we can criticize. HOWEVER, booing a college athlete when he makes a bad play is not something I am big on. I seriously doubt Evans is not trying his hardest, its not really his fault he is not 1-A material playing behind an O line that is not 1-A material. Booing from his own team can have no impact besides a negative one in his case imo.

The kid is playing pretty poor, but what is booing going to do for him? and for recruits at the game? absolutely nothing positive, thats for sure.

unless he is OBVIOUSLY not trying (huge difference but playing poorly) or one of our players is displaying poor sportsmanship that we should not condone, there isnt really a reason to boo our own team.

I don't think that making a big deal out of hits at the W&M game do any good.

When we finally get a chance to play a good team this year we will get waxed and the injury's will keep coming.

The booing thing happens, plain and simple. When you get 60,000 passionate, mostly intoxicated fans into one place, people are going to react emotionally. Even if 1/4 of them boo, that's 15,000 people.

I think a lot of the crowd was just so pissed off we couldn't get a first down against a 1AA team, the emotions came out. Everyone else just sort of adopted a "if you can't beat em, join attitude."

Sucks hearing about the recruits, but can you imagine if Evans had stayed in the game and we would've lost?? They probably would've been a little more disappointed.

if you recall brandon costner last year, i'm pretty sure the general consensus was that he was not playing hard.

we've see evans play better than this (albeit not that much better). he's lifeless when he gets off the field after going another three and out.

and just for the record, i did not actually 'boo' evans, although i did yell at him whatever good that does.

Someone needs to make a "when to cheer" instructional video and get it played up on the screens before a game starts. We never make noise when the other team is in their huddle, we generally wait until ~5s before they snap the ball which really doesn't do very much.

we have been over the "when to cheer" stuff before...

During the Rivers era, they actually put up signs on the jumbotron that said "QUIET OFFENSE AT WORK" and then we were on defense it said "CHEER CHEER CHEER" NOISE NOISE NOISE

and fans are going to boo when the game isn't going their way or someone isn't performing... it wasn't just 3 people booing, i'd wager it was at least half the stadium. so over 20,000 people had the same idea

I thought it was pretty nice how the dude on the speakers (in the student section) tried to get everyone to start a cheer while our offense was in the huddle. Make it even harder on an inept offense.

This is a Luke Decock column from today's N&O
Quote :
"Though the other N.C. State players requested by the media came out quickly, some still in pads, Daniel Evans was the last to emerge Saturday night -- showered, dressed and ready to go home.

Carter-Finley was home for Evans for a long time, long before he ever took the field for the Wolfpack. After the second-generation quarterback was booed off the field by his own people Saturday, it's hard to blame him for wanting to get away.

Evans grew up wanting nothing more than to play for the Pack. He beat long odds to do just that. And in what may have been his last real playing time as a college player, he heard boos instead of cheers -- treated as a convenient scapegoat for a struggling team.

Starting in place of injured Russell Wilson against William & Mary, Evans was at the vortex of a gnawing fear that State's football season may be headed down the tubes, and fast.

By the time Harrison Beck took over and started firing the ball around the field, State's receivers started making catches. The Wolfpack gathered momentum. The uncomfortable empty feeling left from the South Carolina debacle was erased in a flood of good vibes -- too late for Evans, who was more a target of that frustration than a source of it.

This is not an argument against booing college players. They get the scholarships. They accept the attention. There's plenty of good, and they have to take the bad with it. Such is life.

The way State had played through the first five quarters of the season, the Pack probably deserved to get booed, as many State teams and quarterbacks have been booed before.

But this wasn't just another quarterback struggling to complete a pass. Evans grew up sitting in those same stands, the Broughton High grad as much a State fan as anyone who voiced displeasure with his play.

"I love N.C. State football, and I love this team," Evans said when Wilson was made the starter in August. "I love my teammates, and I love this university. So I'm really going to do anything I can to help this team win football games."

That may not matter to some, but it should. If there was ever a player State fans were willing to cut a little slack, wouldn't it be -- shouldn't it be -- this one?

It hasn't been a good start to Evans' senior season, no question about it. He didn't play well as a substitute starter Saturday, and he didn't play well in relief duty against South Carolina. For the season, he's 8-for-23 for 49 yards with three interceptions, running an offense designed for another player.

Saturday, placed in an impossible position, Evans struggled. His first pass was a hopeless lob 10 yards past its intended target. His second was nearly intercepted as well.

He spent the rest of his time mired in miserable field position, throwing on third down into the teeth of a blitzing defense.

Booed again after yet another three-and-out in the second quarter, Evans was told by coach Tom O'Brien that Beck would take his place on the next series. Evans watched from the sideline after that, his arms crossed, suddenly a pariah in a place where he should be considered a role model.

Evans fought his way into the starting job at State and proved he could rally the Pack to a win as effectively as anyone. When he lost his job as the starter, he stuck around and worked his way back into the starting job -- twice.

He had shoulder surgery in December and could have walked away, degree in hand, to start the rest of his life. But he was there in August, fighting for the chance to start, unwilling to turn his back on a fan base that now has turned its back on him.

"You hear the boos," Evans said Saturday, "but it doesn't really affect you."

No one would begrudge him if it did. He has given everything for State, but he had nothing left to give Saturday, when State fans should have given him a break. "

The whole article is a bunch of garbage, I get really sick of the whole "we're a terrible fan base because we expect to actually win games" theory

typical, I really wouldnt expect any less from the N&O

Evans has played terribly for the last two games. He had his chance to win the starting job back after Wilson got hurt, but he squandered that away. Yes, it sucks that he was such a big State fan and got booed off the field, but every single player who has ever been booed has some sort of heart-wrenching back story that could be an excuse for them to not be booed.

As someone said before, if you dont want to get booed, pull up your bootstraps and start playing better

I mean, of course you feel bad for him but

the boos weren't "fuck you Daniel Evans" chants

the boos were more than likely being expressed at the entire inept offense we put on the field -- quarterback, receivers, running backs, offensive line, and coaches all included
