^^^ Didn't her dad (or an alias claiming to be her dad) come on here announcing when she and Archie got married? I seem to remember laughing at the responses to that.

I saw Adam Harrington at a D-League game about a month ago. He scored like 23 points in the first quarter almost all on 3's. Then he got 2 quick technicals in the 2nd for bitching about (admittedly bad) calls. I think David Noel was on his same team

" Chip Alexander, Staff Writer
After being a man on the move, Julius Hodge knows where he wants to be grounded this time next year: In the NBA, hopefully in the playoffs and chasing an NBA championship. "You know me," Hodge said. "I'm still chasing that dream." And this past season, that meant chasing it all over the globe.

The season took the former N.C. State star from New York to Italy to Australia to Albuquerque, N.M. He played against such teams as Benetton Treviso (and former Pack teammate Engin Atsur), the Singapore Slingers and the Austin Toros.

Hodge tried his hand at a new sport, cricket. He even surfed off the south coast of Australia -- the kid from Harlem, N.Y., testing the waves Down Under.

"It was quite an experience and fun at times," Hodge said in an interview last week. "But it's not where I want to be."

In 2005, Hodge was where he wanted to be -- with the Denver Nuggets, as the team's first-round draft choice. But his time in the NBA proved to be all too brief, and nightmarish.

Hodge, the ACC player of the year as a junior at NCSU, played sparingly in 14 games his rookie season before being the shooting victim of a late-night incident. In April 2006, he was hit in the hip, leg and foot after leaving a Denver nightspot. A car pulled up next to his car on Interstate 76 and shots were fired.

No one was charged in the shooting, which left Hodge hospitalized. The next season, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks but soon was placed on waivers and was out of the NBA.

"What happened to me in Denver made me smarter as a player and as a person," Hodge said. "I probably wasn't associating with the right people. I should have been staying around the team veterans like Marcus Camby.

"It helped me grow. One thing you learn is life is more than about those 48 minutes on the basketball court. You should always strive to live life to the fullest. You need to be a good person."

Hodge, 24, dismisses his short stay in the Italian league last season with Cimberio Varese and then Legea Scafati, saying the living arrangements were substandard. But he quickly became something of a cult hero after joining the Adelaide 36ers of Australia's National Basketball League in late December.

"Not only is he a great player, but one of the friendliest and most approachable players we've had at our club," said Paul Bauer, operations manager for the 36ers. "He was a huge hit with our fans. Our attendance figures went through the roof after the fans caught a glimpse of Julius ...

"And he took it all in his stride. A great on-court showman and an even better teammate."

In 12 games with the 36ers, Hodge averaged 24.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and led the league with 5.9 assists a game. The 6-foot-7 guard scored 39 points in one game, and had 25 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists in another.

Hodge said he had a condo overlooking a beach in Adelaide, a city of 1.1 million. He tried cricket but said it was "a little too boring" and the matches too long.

"They can be 10 to 12 hours," he said, laughing.

And his surfing?

"I was horrible," Hodge said. "I fell off and fell on my side pretty hard. I vowed I would not get on a board again."

Leaving Australia after the season, Hodge returned to play 16 games in the NBA's Developmental League with the Albuquerque Thunderbirds. His numbers -- 23.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists -- again were impressive, enhancing his chances of making it back to the NBA.

Hodge said his plan now is to attend a few NBA minicamps, play in the summer league and make it into an NBA preseason camp.

"I definitely see it as very promising," he said.

Hodge said while he is still "the prankster," he no longer seeks out the nightlife. He has a 15-month-old daughter, Michaela Supreme Hodge, and said he spends much of his free time with her at home.

"Instead of me going out late at night, she keeps me up at night," he said, laughing again.

Hodge said he speaks every couple of weeks with Herb Sendek, his former coach at State, and wears his Wolfpack garb during his daily workouts at the New York Athletic Club.

"I'm spending a lot of hours on my shooting technique," he said.

Hodge keeps up with the doings in the ACC and hopes State center J.J. Hickson, who has entered his name into this year's NBA Draft, will stay in college for at least another season.

Hodge could have given up his last year of college ball to turn pro. But he's convinced coming back for a senior season helped him become first-round worthy.

"The NBA is a tough transition," he said. "A lot of young guys who jump early don't realize how much hard work it is.

"You've got to make the best decision for you and your family. All I can say to those thinking of making the jump is, 'Good luck.' " "

Former Big Apple star trying to prove worth to Nets

The Nets are working out potential draft picks this week and will again on several other occasions before the June 26 draft. A few local players have been in the gym trying to prove their worthiness to the Nets before continuing a tour that most of the other NBA hopefuls are on this time of year.

On Wednesday, Gary Forbes and Eugene Lawrence - both of Brooklyn - did their thing. Forbes played at Banneker before going to UMass. Lawrence was teammates with Sebastian Telfair at Lincoln, then played at St. John’s.

bloghodge.JPGJulius Hodge, the former St. Ray’s standout from the Bronx, has also been in the gym, not with hopes of getting drafted - he’s already played in the NBA - but with aspirations of getting back into the league.

Hodge, who played very few games for the Nuggets and Bucks before being shot four times in a driveby after leaving a Denver nightclub in April of 2006, is hoping to make a comeback and could get a chance to play for the Nets’ summer league team in Orlando next month.

If he performs well enough, Hodge should be able to open some eyes, perhaps even those of the Nets, who are looking for all sorts of players after missing the playoffs for the first time in seven years this season.

Nets GM Kiki Vandeweghe, who drafted Hodge in the first round when he was running the Nuggets in 2005, said he thinks Hodge is still “very talented” but “just recovering physically” from his wounds.

“I always like giving guys an opportunity, a second chance,” Vandeweghe said. “So far he’s done very well. He’s been here every day, all week.”

Hodge was out of the gym before the media was let in today so no one has spoken to him yet. We’ll try again next week because either way - whether he makes it or not - his story is a good one. He was one of the best players in the city when he played at St. Ray’s and then had a nice career at North Carolina State. He could have been a solid NBA player, if not better, before the shooting incident.

Vandeweghe wouldn’t be surprised to see Hodge back in the league next season. If he plays well enough, there’s even a chance he could end up with the Nets.

“Why not?” Vandeweghe said.

Memphis forward Joey Dorsey and Kansas guard Brandon Rush - who faced each other in the NCAA title game - were the notables to work out today. Chris Douglas-Roberts of Memphis will be in on Saturday, as will Brian Laing, also of St. Ray’s.

The Nets also released their summer league roster today. Practice begins on Wednesday and games will be played July 7-11 in Orlando. Each of the team’s three draft picks - Brook Lopez, Ryan Anderson and Chris Douglas-Roberts will be playing - as well as a few other interesting names, including a couple of local guys.

Both Julius Hodge and Brian Laing will suit up for the Nets. Both played high school ball at St. Ray’s in the Bronx. Laing went undrafted and Hodge is trying to make it back into the league after falling out following a shooting incident a couple of years ago.

Hodge has worked out at the Nets’ practice facility in recent weeks and general manager Kiki Vandeweghe - who drafted him in Denver - has said that Hodge could be an option for the Nets if he plays well.

This sounds familiar. Let’s go back umm say, 3 years ago. An up and coming future gold medalist, by the name of Chris Paul, crosses the path of none other, Julius Hodge! The rest is history! We all knew you were trying to tarnish his career. Now fast forward 3 years later. Who’s on top and who’s still trying to act? Will the real Julius Hodge please stand up!
P.S…I think CP’s career and off the court behavior speaks for who should have really been the blame that day

Free agent no more

September 23, 2008 @ 2:55 pm · Filed under New Jersey Nets

Hi guys,

We will have to change the name of the blog in coming days to Training Camp Diary. It will not be Free Agent Diary anymore since I will no longer be a free agent at the end of the week. I’m signing a contract with the Nets in a few days and I’m very excited about the opportunity the team is giving me.

The third point guard spot is the one I’m definitely looking to fill. The two guys ahead of me in the depth chart, Devin Harris and Keyon Dooling, have been like big brothers for me here lately. You learn a lot from them just from watching, but also playing against them is a good thing. Besides, they give you tips of good stuff about how to handle the point guard position. They are winners and I’m very grateful to them.

They are not the only guys that have been good to me. I have to give a shoutout to my man Rick Dalatri, who’s been helping me so much in the weight room since I arrived here five months ago. I’m at 222 pounds, 6 percent body fat right now. Also I have to give credit to Howard Eisley, who is teaching me a lot of useful things about the PG spot… But really, everything and everybody has been Class A since I began my journey with the Nets in the spring. Hopefully it all ends up with me staying here.

This training camp is going to be a little different for me. With the Nuggets, I was the young, excited and impressionable new guy. Now I’m more mature and more prepared. And although I know this time around I know I have nothing guaranteed, I’m not nervous. I’m hungry. And when you’re hungry, what do you do? You eat. That’s my mindset. That’s what you learn growing up in the NYC playgrounds.

Talk to you when training camp begins. Bye!

good for Jules, way to get back into the league

NJ Nets: The Sean Chronicles
by Dave D'Alessandro/The Star-Ledger
Wednesday October 01, 2008, 2:21 PM
nba.comJulius Hodge

It seems that not a day goes by without someone shoveling effusive praise on Sean Williams - which you heard last year, but this time it's different. This time it doesn't sound as if they're content just to have this shiny new toy to play with. It sounds like they're genuinely impressed by the way he's trying to remake himself.

Vince first. We asked him who the camp stars have been so far, and he came out with this:

"Ryan's been playing great basketball. His development, from watching him in the summer league to now, has been just tremendous," Carter said, referring to Ryan Anderson, the rook.

"But I should have said Sean first. Sean's been amazing. At both ends -- his development at the offensive end and his ability at the defensive end have been tremendous. I think he's going to be a big part of what we do, as far as our transition game and halfcourt offense. He'd definitely be No. 1."

Has he noticed whether he's being treated differently than last year, when Sean was basically regarded as everybody's goofy little brother?

"We treat him just like everyone else: 'You're a grown man, you're an NBA player, and we expect what we expect,'" Carter said. "He's handling it well."

And just to prove he wasn't tugging everybody's chain Tuesday, L-Frank went on (and on) about Williams today.

"Sean has played very very well. He truly has," the coach said. "He's bringing great energy. He's impacting the game in other ways other than blocking shots. He's getting himself in the right position at the right times defensively, put himself in position to take charges. He's talking more. Offensively, he's doing a good job running the floor, extra possessions, working the glass. He's doing a good job of doing his job and he's been pretty consistent doing it so he's stood out."

So, a growth spurt. Now he just needs someone to stay in his ear, we assume?

"I think he's been focused in terms of doing his job and understanding what his job is, and if you do your job, then good things can happen," Frank said. "I think everyone is there to guide him. Our assistants have spent a lot of time talking to him, Kiki has been with him. John Lucas has been with him. Ultimately it comes down to you wanting to do what you need to do."

It sounds as though Yi Jianlian is getting close - very close - to actually doing something resembling basketball again. The coach related that he did some dummy offense Tuesday night, and once they hit the 24-hour mark, they'll evaluate where his sore ankle is. Wednesday, he stuck to rehab work and light shooting. Thursday? He might actually scrimmage, but nobody's confirming that yet.

Things have been going so well, L-Frank called off the night session Wednesday, so two-a-days are officially over, done, kaput.

Either that, or he's getting soft.

Either that, or there were just too many tweaks (Lopez leg bruise, Hayes hamstring, Najera wrist, and Swift got an eye-poke) to push his luck.

Either that, or his voice just can't take these 14-hour days, because he can barely be heard at this point.

"It's basically taking into account what they did in September, and just their attention in the meeting this morning," the coach said, adding that they aced another pop quiz. "It just felt like they deserved it. I said, 'We're not giving you anything. You've earned it.' So we're off tonight and we'll be back at it tomorrow."

If you're wondering about Carter, who needed a few days to get his legs back, he officially declares himself up to speed.

"I think the first two practices was more of an adjustment period. I was trying to get myself back into the swing of things," he said Wednesday. "I felt I wasn't where I wanted to be for training camp and I was kind of playing catchup with my rhythm. By Day 3, I felt a little better."

Coach: "He's had a very good camp. In terms of wins he's right up there towards the top. He may have even taken the lead today, either him or Devin."

By wins, he means where his team comes out in scrimmages and other competitions. Somebody charts each individual's "record," and Carter is on top.

Which is a good thing, because a dirty, closely-guarded secret was that Vince floated through camp last year - not because he had just signed the new contract, but because he and his savvy veteran teammates thought they could pace themselves. Oops.

We got to watch an eight-minute scrimmage Wednesday, and Julius Hodge turned the last two minutes into his personal playground.

No kidding: His team (the whites, with Josh/Awvee/Gill and Simmons at the 4) was down early, but it was a close game with two minutes left. Then Hodge channeled his inner Jordan and....

# Broke back 2-on-3 to hit a lefty floating bank shot to give White the lead;

# Got to the rim off a high screen from Simmons for a layup;

# Stole Sean's inbounds pass and hit a left hand over Sean, who hacked him, giving White a 16-10 lead with 40 seconds left, and leading to a Frank lecture on how to take the ball out;

# Airballed the resulting free throw. Everyone politely chose to ignore that;

# And when they went to sudden death overtime (16-16, Devin hit a buzzer-beating 3), he set up Storey's winning trey with a drive-and-kick.

Yes, Julius Hodge dominated.

Against Carter/Harris.

That's camp for ya.

Airballed the free throw???

I still never saw anyone like J Hodge that just completely lost their free throw stroke like he did after his sophomore year.

I was up in NYC for a few days a couple weeks ago, and my girlfriend and I were walking down 8th Ave a few blocks from MSG, and I stopped and SWORE I saw Hodge walking down the street on his cell phone.

I'm not sure, and I didn't say anything, obviously, but I'm 80 percent certain it was him. Looked just like him.

Ahead of the game

October 4, 2008 @ 7:02 pm · Filed under Bobby Simmons, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Keyon Dooling, Kiki Vandeweghe, Lawrence Frank, Rod Thorn, Sean Williams, Vince Carter, Yi Jianlian

Hello everybody,

We are right now in training camp and it’s been a blessing for all of us. Learning from Kiki Vandeweghe and coach Lawrence Frank has been very instructive for me in terms of understanding the philosophy, the little tidbits of the offense and also the defensive sets.

I think it’s been a plus that I ran some of our offense in college under Herb Sendek at North Carolina State, and I think it puts me a little bit ahead of the game.

Without getting too specific, practices have been pretty much guys going out playing hard, especially on defense. I think we’re right now a little bit ahead in terms of that because a lot of our guys want to play defense. They are like, “OK, we are the underdogs but this year will definitely be a good one for us.”

There are some guys here – like Bobby Simmons or Yi Jianlian – that are eager to show everybody their value. Sean Williams has been finishing every play, every alley oop he catches, and dunking amazingly. He’s so tough to box out, he’s all over the offensive boards, and he’s making shots around the basket. He’s definitely a big plus for us during this training camp. I think we’ll jell quickly. Even Rod Thorn, who had a knee replacement surgery, has spent some time with us.

As I said before, I believe I can fill the third point guard spot. During and after practice, coach Frank talks to me and tells me he knows that I wanna make the right play every time, and he lets me know that I just have to take a little step back, just breathe, relax and run a set. Also, Keyon Dooling has helped me a lot.

Sometimes there might be a set call but the defense may not be ready, so I take the extra second or two to get a set up. I just let the offense come and run it smoothly. I think I’ve been doing a good job at that with the help of the coach.

This group of guys, I give a lot of credit to Kiki and the entire organization building this team, because we all get along. I know that Vince Carter said that Chris Douglas-Roberts, Brian Hamilton and me are like The Three Stooges. Well, you know… We’re young! We practice hard and we are cracking jokes as well.

The next week we will travel to Europe to play against the Miami Heat so it will be really fun. I hope we play good and continue improving as a team. And of course I hope we will do some sightseeing in Paris and London!

That’s all for now.

Bye!
