i feel awkward taking pictures of people i don't know in situations like that (though i love the shot)...i guess i feel like i'm encroaching upon their personal space
12/9/2008 11:38:23 AM
Some people have issues with it, too.
12/9/2008 1:31:02 PM
some sort of waist level viewfinder is helpful for street shooting.
12/9/2008 1:35:53 PM
They make those, ya know. Although I hear on cropped sensor cameras they don't work quite as well.Street photography is pretty rad, but you've gotta have enough initiative to do it. Even after years of shooting, even as a news photographer, I still sometimes feel a bit odd shooting around people. Best thing is to just try and keep a low profile.

I expect to get my 40D in tomorrow with the 18-55 and 55-200 anyone suggest any particular lenses that I should purchase later on? I wont be using the camera for sports, but maybe a concert or two if I can get it in, and for pictures of my chinchillas and for just plain fun, Im not aiming to be a professional...

^ Agreed, my 50mm is my favorite lens. Great all around lens that is crisp and fast. My 70-200 L is great but I wish it was an IS. Great for outside shots though.
12/9/2008 3:35:03 PM
I've got a problem with my camera, or I think it's my camera. Canon Rebel XT, purchased in May of 06 with about 10k shots taken so far. Very few of the pictures I take turn out very sharp like they used to. Happens with all 3 of my lenses, the 50mm f/1.8, and the 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS, and the 18-55 kit lens. All the glass appears clean. There's a small speck of dust in the corner of the sensor, but I don't have a blower to get it out. What should my next step be?[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 3:49 PM. Reason : I don't have another Canon to test the lenses...]
12/9/2008 3:48:27 PM
my 50mm stays on my camera 80% of the time.
12/9/2008 3:49:17 PM
do you guys touch up your photos with a program? mine don't look that great raw from the d40
12/9/2008 3:53:54 PM
that's because you suck.
12/9/2008 3:55:14 PM
yea, photoshopthough it helps having a decent base from which to work. you shouldn't be making major changes, only subtle ones
12/9/2008 3:56:41 PM
so wait... are you saying Canon lenses will fit Nikon cameras? (ie the 50mm?)I meant that I was getting a Nikon D40 lol not a Canon 40D (sorry!)[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 4:11 PM. Reason : ]

DOH!
12/9/2008 4:29:53 PM
The Nikon 50mm 1.8 is only $100 and the 1.4 is $350ishbut the D40 won't auto focus them
12/9/2008 5:08:28 PM
The 1.8 is $110, the 1.4 is $285, and the 1.4 AF-S (taking pre-orders) is $440....but wait, the AF-S version will have FREE SHIPPING!

I recently discovered the white balance feature and suddenly my indoor shots are no longer yellow... amazingI'm having trouble framing stuff up on my d40 properly... I keep missing edges and getting random stuff in my picture that I was pretty positive I didn't have in it... what is the viewfinder slider for?example I missed the lower corners of this shot... I want a 50mm lens The one out for the d40 that's nikkor is $3something and won't autofocus-not a big deal but there's rumors on the internets they're making one that will soon.

Did anybody see my post above?
12/9/2008 6:47:03 PM
Did you switch it to manual focus on camera?[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 6:51 PM. Reason : ^ha read it briefly but didnt put it together. ]
12/9/2008 6:50:29 PM
For the D40, I'd just get the cheap 50mm 1.8D lense. Although you can also get an old AIS MF 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 for about $125 and those are metal and supposedly feel really nice to focus since their MF lenses. They won't meter properly though i'm pretty sure.goFigure, if you shoot jpegs, follow the setting recommendations above at kenrockwell. If you shoot RAW, then yeh you'll need some tweaks during "development". You def need to sharpen RAWs. jpegs are sharpened in the camera.I just discovered Noise Ninja. It is quite incredible. I just got back from a house boat trip and my dumbass shot a whole day at ISO3200. They looked of course like pure shit. I ran the Noise Ninja Auto filter on them three times and then applied a 50% unsharpen mask and they came out pretty damn good. Any tips for using Noise Ninja?[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 6:54 PM. I'll be upgrading my body eventually and would like my lens to carry over. will they fit up to the d90?I dont know yet if I'm gonna get a mid model or shoot straight to a d700, d3x, or something along those lines ....
12/9/2008 6:52:52 PM
^^^Did I put it on manual focus? No.Just wondering if I should go to somewhere like Peace and see what they say. But to save a trip over there, I figured I'd ask here.[Edited on December 9, 2008 at 6:54 PM. Reason : eh]
12/9/2008 6:54:05 PM
I'm thinking it's a setting problem but I don't know jack shit about canons so....
12/9/2008 6:57:08 PM
Kiwi, yeh they'll all work on the D90 and the FX bodies, too. None of the 50mm are DX lenses.I sort of year you.. I read the specs on the D90 and its sweet. But at the end of the day its not THAT much different from what a D40 does. a D700 in FX format is compelling due to a) low light and b) FX format for wide angles and such. but yeh, i'm far from deserving a $2300 camera.
12/9/2008 6:58:15 PM
Exactly, I'm no where near good enough to warrant that kind of camera yet but I know I could do so much more with it. I have to decide if that's the goal because I don't think I want to waste all my money on DX lens and accessories only to upgrade and start over shortly.Except I want a 50mm 1.4 lens. baaaaaaaaaaad

I got you beat on the claustrophobia/agoraphobia inducing situations:Tofukuji Temple in Kyoto during Maple Season:The train station stair well, it took 10 minutes to walk down the stairsThe famous bridge and gate to get to the temple where there are lots of maples. It's the little roofed thing in the far of the picture. From this point to the bridge it was an hour and a half of shuffling, very slow shuffling.Never fucking again.
