calipari calls our job a great job because he is egging donovan on to come here i bet... that way the weak SEC is even more of a cakewalk for him year in and year out
3/30/2011 8:44:04 AM
If BD comes here because of Calipari's comments remind me that I'm eternally indebted to that piece of shit.
3/30/2011 8:47:46 AM
shit balls
3/30/2011 8:51:17 AM
i had a nice dream last night...nothing to do with the coaching search...just partying and digging this girl out
3/30/2011 9:00:25 AM
^^i'd never say it is "because" of his comments... but if they help in the slightest way AT ALL... yea we would be indebted to the snake that is calipari

Anyone hear Shaka on 99.9 this morning? You'd think they'd have to ask him about whether he'd leave VCU even if he can't give a straight answer.
3/30/2011 9:10:42 AM
God forbid someone be classy for once and leave the man to his Final Four game.
3/30/2011 9:15:41 AM
Day 16!!!1
3/30/2011 9:16:59 AM
It was probably agreed upon before the interview that they would not pose any questions regarding his future at VCU (or lack thereof). It's not like they just call him up and ask him whatever they want, M&M are more professional than that.
3/30/2011 9:17:07 AM
I can't believe any of you people put stock in the BD rumor. Seriously?Seriously?
3/30/2011 9:17:08 AM
OMG! Donovan high-fives Miller while walking out of Dail Center to get in a car driven by Shaka Smart. Meeting Rick Barnes at Baja Burrito.
3/30/2011 9:18:52 AM
What is he going to say? "Once I am done with our run, I am totally going to ditch this bitch."
3/30/2011 9:19:57 AM
^^hilarious and original. well played, sir.[Edited on March 30, 2011 at 9:20 AM. Reason : ^]
3/30/2011 9:20:21 AM
I mean he might just say "I'm not leaving VCU for any amount of money no matter what" idk
3/30/2011 9:21:06 AM
But that would be a lie. I hear what you're saying. If they bothered to ask him he would just be blowing hot air with whatever answer he gave.

Maybe Marshall shouldve made the fucking tournament one of the four years he's been at a school that is capable of getting a good seed
3/30/2011 9:39:44 AM
VCU played the same teams they would have played if they had a lower seed, just in a different order.

You guys are going to look stupid debating about Shaka vs Marshall when we hire Tom Izzo

I'm not particularly gung ho about Marshall, but if he's our next coach, i'll support him.we could do worse.and have.

so its down to two final contestantsGREGGGG VS SHAKAlets get it on.
3/30/2011 10:08:04 AM
History is not on the side of 14+ seeds making it past the first day or so. And yes, I think they would've gotten bounced playing Kansas on the first day rather than a) with tons of momentum on their side and b) playing for a FF.
3/30/2011 10:08:47 AM
This Mizzou coaching search is looking alot like the NCSU search of 5 years ago About to get turned down for the 2nd time -- Welcome to the B-list!![Edited on March 30, 2011 at 10:16 AM. Reason : .]
3/30/2011 10:15:37 AM
^^ i beg to differ. Kansas was beatable the same way Louisville was.[Edited on March 30, 2011 at 10:16 AM. Reason : ^^]
3/30/2011 10:16:20 AM
You realize if VCU were to beat Kansas on the opening day, that would mean VCU was a 16 seed and would've accomplished something that's never happened before in the history of the NCAAT... right? It's a moot point. VCU is where they are and WSU is where they are. I'm just saying Marshall shouldn't be looked at negatively because he's only won one NCAAT game. His highest seeding was 11. It's tough to win when you're 14/15/16, and that's a fact. But it is what it is. He's on the verge of winning an NIT, which is something State fans would probably jump for joy over at this point. I don't think he's a bad coach at all.
3/30/2011 10:19:15 AM
your argument is terrible.
3/30/2011 10:19:50 AM
Oh yeah I forgot, 14/15/16 seeds win tons of games in the NCAAT, all the time. I'm just saying don't hold it against Marshall, he was seeded there 6/7 times, no shit he's not winning in the NCAAT.
3/30/2011 10:21:47 AM
Last I checked, seeds better than 14 were open to teams not in the power 6
3/30/2011 10:23:04 AM
Yeah, but in Marshall's case, he was at Winthrop. 14 is probably as good as it gets in that conference.[Edited on March 30, 2011 at 10:25 AM. Reason : ...]
3/30/2011 10:24:52 AM
Maybe if he wants to get in the tournament he should play a harder out of conference schedule/win games on that schedule??
3/30/2011 10:28:34 AM
^ One bid league.Just sayin'... I don't get all the hate for him and the love for Smart. Marshall would be a solid coach. Smart... maybe.[Edited on March 30, 2011 at 10:29 AM. Reason : ...]
3/30/2011 10:28:56 AM
^^ Missouri State had an RPI of 37 and still didn't get in from that conference.
3/30/2011 10:35:23 AM
^^ Smart is a much easier transition for us
3/30/2011 10:37:50 AM
For the sake of your argument let's pretend that VCU had gotten the 14 seed in the same region. They would have had to play Purdue instead of Georgetown. Big fucking deal. VCU played both of those teams and both games were not even close (18 point wins for VCU).Marshall's teams would have had better seeding if he had ever managed to win a game against a decent team. He couldn't therefore they backed into the tournament by winning their shitty shitty conference. I will summarize the issues with Marshall- Perceived personality issues (boozie argues nothing to it but for some reason he has gotten passed over for a lot of jobs) This could lead to an inability to recruit and you can't win in the ACC without at least some talent. - Boring offense (extreme reliance on conservative set plays)- His best accomplishment is a second round exit in the NCAA's
3/30/2011 10:39:33 AM
^ You're assuming playing Purdue late when the team has a lot of confidence and momentum is the same as playing Purdue on the first day. They have made it far but it's lightning in a bottle. Their regular season performance would not have lead anyone to believe that, barring a miracle run, they would've done anything in the tournament. And just a correction, but Marshall's greatest accomplishment is a likely NIT championship .
3/30/2011 10:43:19 AM
finishing top 32 is better than finishing 69th
3/30/2011 10:44:11 AM
Because Smart is a known good recruiter, was an assistant under good coaches, and in his second year as a head coach, took a mid major to THE FINAL FOUR. Every reason to believe he has major upswing. Plus the dude is smart as shit, and everyone he has coached with speaks very highly of him and saying he will be one of the next bigs. No, he didn't bring in those kids to VCU, but he sure as shit got them to where they are. Roy Williams didn't win his first national title with his players. If we hire Smart, I'm not expecting to be super awesome in the beginning, but I do feel 100% confident that the product he would put on the floor would be 100% better. Those kids he has now leave everything on the floor. We haven't seen that since Sid's first year.
3/30/2011 10:44:37 AM
I have no doubt Smart would be an upgrade over Sid... question is, how much. And I sure as hell hope he can motivate kids who admitted to being lazy.
3/30/2011 10:47:34 AM
Remember when St. Joe's was a #1 seed a few years back with Jameer Nelson? If you're a great team, you're not going to be seeded 13 or 14 or 15 or 16 or whatever
3/30/2011 10:48:07 AM
^ If your conference is perceived as weak, it puts a ceiling on where you could conceivably be seeded. And of course, the committee never makes mistakes, like inexplicably leaving good teams out altogether...
3/30/2011 10:50:42 AM
You do realize VCU's opening round opponent was Georgetown that is not some pushover win to build momentum with (I know I am ignoring the play in game but play in games don't really count). Hell VCU's first round win was probably a higher quality win than Marshall has had in his entire career. I think Smart is a risk but he is a risk with a much better payoff. If all of our pipe dreams fall through you have two gambles.Marshall is a safer bet but at best you will maybe one day reach the level of Sendek if you are lucky.Smart is riskier (less experience) but he has shown the ability to WIN BIG GAMES. His upside could be huge.

3/30/2011 10:51:40 AM
