I usually do force myself to go to sleep when I'm hungry late at night. But I sometimes wake up with severe hunger pangs around 2 am. So I make myself go back to sleep and then I'm really out of it in the morning and I feel awful. I usually wake up every night around 2 or 3 am. Maybe my blood sugar is too low? The last couple of times I had basic tests run, my fasting blood sugar was below 50. The nurse said that was a bit low, but since my other vitals were fine, it was nothing to worry about.

Also, maybe the nutella affected your blood sugar? If it's not something you're used to eating, it could have caused a sugar spike.

dawn's phenomenon!

if your blood sugar gets too low at night your body can flip out and jack it up to like 200.

but this almost exclusively seen in diabetics, so this isn't a good response, but i felt like sharing

I've been dieting and exercising for at least 2 weeks now and haven't lost a pound. I guess I will just start eating salads every night for dinner and do tae bo every day.

^ How's your sodium intake? Has it been around that time of the month? Note, if you're retaining water, you could be heavier or staying the same weight, but your muscle-to-fat ratio could be better.

Also, if you're building muscle, you may not lose weight. But your clothes might get looser. Pay attention to your clothing and less on the numbers on the scale. Those numbers are important, but if your goal is to slim down/shape up, your clothing will tell the full story.

if this were a church and lucy was preaching, I would have to yell out "AMEN" to that! I have had to realize that about myself...I tend to be more muscular so I will never weigh as low as I want. I know I am doing well when I am able to buy smaller clothes or take in old ones. We focus too much on the scale.

OHHHHHH YEAAAHHHHHHHHHH I'm perioding soon, that's why the scale won't budge. hahaha. But my clothes are definitely more loose. So not complaining.

My period was last week and it does make me bloated which is why I didn't pay much attention to the numbers. I actually haven't weighed myself in 10 days. I don't think I have a lot of sodium. How much should I aim for? I think wheat bread has the most sodium of anything I eat all day. I don't like salty foods so I never really focused on sodium.

Lunch meats, soups, cheeses, salad dressings, most condiments ... all pack a punch of sodium.

I mean today was the first day I've weighed myself in ten days.

Anyway, apparently Peter is feeding me sodium. Bastard. I use Raspberry Vinaigrette dressing. It does have 290mg of sodium. But, I sweat A LOT when I work out so I feel like I do need to replace some sodium. Honestly I only count calories and protein. What else should I be monitoring. Everything? /sigh

I don't remember it being this difficult last time I dieted. My Mom mentioned I might want to get my thyroid checked out since her's and my grandmother's is fucked up. I will tweak my diet some more, but if this continues I might have to see a doctor or something.

thyroid issues can cause all sorts of weirdness.

and if you take thermogenics with thyroid issues it gets even wonkier.

just watch your protein/fats/carbs macros, and find out where you need to be.

If it's only a normal amount and you work out, then sodium intake isn't an issue. Most likely it's a hormonal thing that could be causing you to retain water.

Also a vitamin deficiency can cause you to hold on to weight. It's really important to get enough vitamin D ... good idea to take a multi. And for women who are sexually active, be sure to take pre-natal vitamins.

possibly but i still felt like crap this morning i feel better now though so who knows.

I fast almost daily for about 16-18hours. I find it a great way to keep my calories under control, focus on work rather than eating, and it fits my training style very well.

Now that I am bulking (I've gained 15lbs over the course of 3months) I usually fast until my work outs at midday, then pig out post work out.

It's pretty ignorant to correlate fasting with pyschological issues because it can be used as a very useful tool for health, longevity and body composition manipulation.

I think the blood sugar issue is why I wake up every night around 2 or 3.

^ Plus, every doctor makes you fast before a physical!

wow....low to mid 50s. I feel like shit when mine is that low and sweaty and often need help to get food. Be careful, Lucy. low sugars are about the worst feelings because it is scary!!! Some people have such low sugars that they need "sugar shots." If you don't want to eat, I wonder if glucose tabs/gel would help you to up your sugar at 2-3am?

And Lucy, that's about what mine were and I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and insulin resistance... I would talk to someone. The last time mine were that low I literally don't remember but bit and pieces until my mom was able to force feed me sugar packs :/ doesn't sound safe

lucy, go to the pharmacy, look near the diabetics supplies, and find the little bottles of glucose tabs. Each one is about 3-5g of glucose, which is more than the amount of circulating glucose in your bloodstream at any given time. If you get to feeling lightheaded from low sugar, take one and see if it helps.

That's good to know. Had never considered glucose tabs.

Will def schedule a doc appt. Haven't had a regular check-up in years ... since 2002 maybe ... long overdue for a checkup. I just do the basic health screenings at work (weight, cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.).

It's easy for you to fast because your work involves actual working out (or being active in helping someone else work out). I've found physical activity to be one the best appetite suppressants over the years.

But since I sit in my office behind my desk most of the day, fasting for that long is pretty damn near impossible.

^Yea... boredom is a HUGE factor in hunger control. If I am sedentary for a few hours with nothing keeping me focused, I start cruising the pantry for snacks.

Coffee helps.

Would you consider strength training class as vigorous or regular when I track calories?


Keep in mind, a class holds me more accountable and pushes me more than I would if I were doing it myself.

I'd figure if one aspect of your life/day went sour, you'd want to improve another aspect even more, especially one that's in your control (i.e. the gym).

I hate to see people get discouraged all-around due to one specific instance that turned out poorly.


Personally, I've never, ever felt worse after a workout/run than I had before it. Quite the opposite.

yeah. everything's dandy now.

only bothers me if it's cold or going to rain, and well... living in southeast texas now instead of delaware neither of those things happen often.

when i wasn't exercising for shit it'd be really tight in the mornings but i think that lifting a lot and doing other cardio stuff has really put that bitch into place.
