It definitely wouldn't help. Murphy was a big fan of Herb's for a while (as were a lot of the "PTB") and had a large voice in him staying for so long.

From HD
Quote :
"Earl Wolff, S, NC State: After starting just four games in 2009 as a redshirt freshman, Wolff was one of the team’s top defenders, leading the Pack in tackles with 95, including two sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. He also had one interception, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. "

Didn't realize Wolff's numbers were that good this year. Hope he continues to develop as an open field tackler.

Say what you want about him, but getting Amato to coach a D-1AA team would be a pretty nice get for UNCC.

It would be great to be the first team to ever play them...if we're going to schedule 2 joke games every year anyway, might as well make this one so we can beat down Chuck...I really don't understand why a team like Liberty is on the schedule anyway

Anyone else think it's absurd that UNCC is moving forward with starting up a nonrevenue football program when the whole system is making deep cuts?

Anyone know a way that I could get a ticket at a good price for the Army vs Navy game in December? I don't want to pay $139 on stub hub to sit in the 400 level end zone.

^I don't want to travel to Maryland without a ticket. I read it is one of the toughest tickets to get in college football. I will probably try to get lucky on ebay, but I know that won't work.

Well it looks as though general public tickets go on sale in May. The cheapest seats are $72 for the upper-upper level!

I could be wrong, but aren't football programs/stadiums/etc. almost wholly paid for by boosters and donations and other such shit? Maybe it's just that way when the school is established, I don't know. That's just the impressions I've been given.

Football only makes money at big schools with large bases of ticket holders and donors, since it is such an expensive sport/program to operate. TV deals, lucrative advertising, etc help. I'm pretty confident the only revenue-producing football programs in North Carolina are NC State, UNC, and maybe ECU.

http://espn.go.com/ncaa/revenue/_/year/2008/type/expenses

For example, in 2008 UNC had $66.1 million in revenue, but $65.9 million in expenses. Private schools typically don't disclose all of that info and are able to hide the subsidy from other sources i.e. tuition. The schools that turn big profits are typically your big football schools with $80K+ seat stadiums. That isn't the best report but it gives you an idea.

$72 isn't bad for face value. Somehow they already have tickets listed on the web at stub hub and the cheapest seats are $139.

I would be that any Army-Navy tickets on StubHub are Redskins PSL's trying to see if they can make a few bucks over their first-rights to tickets.

There are always tickets available in the weeks leading up to the game, and given that this will be in stadium with stupid expensive tickets and 20k+ more seats than the typical A/N game, I'd bet there will be better chances closer to game time.

but I still wouldn't expect face value unless you waited until after kickoff in the parking lot. and then you miss all the cool pregame shit

^I read that there are 97,000 people in the DC area who are either active members of the military, or veterans, so that is part of the reason they moved the game for 1 year. My guess is it will be a tough ticket to get (at least at a good price).

Has anyone ever been to one of these? I hear the pre-game is awesome.

i have no doubt the stadium will get filled. and yes there is close to 100k military personnel in the area. but most military people don't really care about their service academy football team. a sailor from Lincoln is probably going to care more about Nebraska football than Navy. but I am sure there will be plenty who go for the spectacle - it should be on every CFB fan's bucket list of games.

the pregame is great - the marchon's, the parachute teams from the Army and the Navy SEALs, the flyover, the blessing, the choir singing the national anthem (no aguilera fuckups there)...it's all really cool.

I've been to louder places (like LSU for a Bama game at night), and my 4 years as a mid certainly biased me, but it's an awesome experience. I'm hoping a lot of folks in the NC area think about coming up for it and get to experience it all

If you ever get the opportunity to go to an Army-Navy game, you have to do it. I went to several in Philly and Baltimore, and no matter how miserably cold it was, I will always remember it as some of the best times of my life. It's a completely different atmosphere from anything I've ever been to.

randy shannon as a head coach no. randy shannon as a defensive coordinator, hell yes. As a coordinator his defenses are top 10 in the country. Maryland is already a thorn in our side, now they will have one of the top defenses, and returning an excellent QB. They will be a problem and it won't take them long.

Shannon is a really good DC and he can recruit. He'll bring some athletes into Maryland and coach them well.

I mean, we have troubles with Maryland regardless who is coaching them. But they are making good hires post-Fridge.

there's plenty of talent in the VA/DC area. It's not like Maryland has had crap for defense, they've always had pretty good talent at D under Fridge, now that talent will have a hell of a coach.

I'm probably going to try to go, if I can get a face value ticket since my Mom's cousin lives in the DC area and my sister only lives 2.5 hours away in Richmond. I'll have a free place to stay for this, but I won't when they go back to Philly to play the game.

There is a huge contingent of active and retired military officers, many of which are academy grades. The Pentagon is there, after all, not to mention being less than an hour from Annapolis.

pretty funny letter to HD on her blog.
Quote :
"Daniel in Greenville, N.C., writes: I take offense to you putting ECU football in the same sentence as App State, Arkansas State, Marshall. I know that is who VT plays non-conference this year, but if you do not watch ECU football I don't comment on them. Lets not forget that last year ECU lost more players than anyone in the country, and they got a completely new coaching staff. Even with that we beat NC State who looked like would go to the ACC Championship game, and ECU was in the game with VT and UNC until the 3rd quarter. ECU is not a push over team and it is a totally off the cuff comment. ECU could step into the ACC and have a .500 conference record, you give them a couple of years to recruit at the BCS level and we would be right in the thick of things. Also I would venture to say that our facilities would be up around the top of the ACC's. POST THAT!!

HD: Ahem. I do watch ECU. I watched ECU beat NC State last year. I also watched ECU lose to Virginia Tech, North Carolina and get creamed by Maryland. I'm not saying Virginia Tech should take ECU lightly -- they've stumbled against the Pirates before. I'm simply saying that Virginia Tech should beat a team that ranked No. 117 in the nation in rushing defense, 107 in pass efficiency defense, 120 in total defense and 119 in scoring defense, 98th in turnover margin and 109th in sacks and No. 99 in TFLs. "

Wonder if this is from killpups?

^^People use to talk a lot of shit about HD, but most of her stuff this past year was pretty spot on. I mean, she states a lot of the obvious, but she doesn't seem to play favorites and treats NC State pretty well. She's also not afraid to let people have it in her mailbag.

Two thumbs up for HD.

I've seen this several times and have to ask...why would he be a good fit for that job?? He failed in his only attempt at a head coaching job. His one success here in the beginning was recruiting where he could pitch the ACC (playing against Vtech, Miami, and FSU) and facilities...where he would be able to do none of that with the '49ers.

I just don't see why he would have been a great fit.

Umm...when he started, he couldn't really brag about our facilities. Remember, without him we would still have a grassy bank and no Murphy Center/Vaughn Towers/decent stadium.

Amato probably would have been good for them. He knows how to bring attention to a program. (For a few years it seemed like us and Louisville alternated the ESPN thursday night games). He knows how to recruit.

Sure he would never get them to the BCS championship game, but give him 5 years and I would bet they would have a decent foundation for a program.

"Multiple sources tell FITS that Garcia – who is known to party like a rock star – was involved in a massive, all-night bender in his hotel room the night before the bowl game. In fact, Garcia’s alleged party became so raucous that the S.C. Highway Patrol – which provided security for the team during its stay in Atlanta – was called to investigate.

Upon entering Garcia’s hotel room, they are said to have discovered the quarterback in a highly-intoxicated state in the company of five different young women – two of whom were completely naked.

We know, we know … more power to him, right? He’s 21 years old, and there’s obviously no law (yet) against enjoying some female companionship.

But what happened after the quarterback was busted?

Rather than let Garcia sleep his big night off, our sources say that the USC coaching staff forced him to run on a treadmill while he was still hungover. There was reportedly even talk of benching him for the bowl game – or at least sitting him out for a series."

Russell would've had all 5 of them completely naked

VT and Miami joined the ACC in the 6th of Chuck's 7 seasons at State, so I doubt they had much to do with it "in the beginning," and it clearly didn't help much at the end either.

I think he was very good at recruiting 1) "athletes" who didn't necessarily stand out at a particular position, and 2) players from Florida who felt like they were overlooked by the big 3 programs in FL.

Clearly he isn't good as a major conference HC, but we talkin' bout Charlotte. Not FSU, not FSU. Not FSU. We talkin' bout Charlotte.
