The stupid side of our fanbase, I guess. Nobody is saying that all we want is to make the tournament, but that's the key first step. Last year we overperformed, this year we underperformed. Swap the tourney results of the last 2 seasons and nobody is complaining right now. If we miss the tournament next season in a failed rebuilding effort, then we can really start talking about disappointment.
3/22/2013 5:42:39 PM
Just keep us on the bubble at least, and hopefully get our guys to bring a more consistent defensive effort game in and game out. It'll be rough at times but we should be no worse then middle of the pack in the ACC.
3/22/2013 5:57:38 PM
just to make sure I understand this correctly, will Gottfried's legacy show that he took us to the 2nd round of the 2013 tourney?

I wonder how our offense is going to look next season without Brown. Our half court offense is more "Top 50" than "Top 10" and I feel like the fast break element was more due to the players than the coaching. Gottfried's teams at Bama never played very fast.
3/22/2013 6:33:23 PM
3/22/2013 6:34:34 PM
so far his teams have been incredibly pleasing to watch, when they're actually playing. of all things to complain about, his alabama teams being boring is not one of them.
3/22/2013 6:37:01 PM
Boring isnt really what I was going for. Effective, more so.
3/22/2013 6:40:02 PM
I had hoped this guy would have boosted the credibility
3/22/2013 6:40:45 PM
^ Not sure why everyone makes Lutz out to be some coaching genius. I mean, he was fired from Charlotte...

1. Hire Greenberg and Pearl as assistants2. Form the most dynamic former ESPN analyst coaching staff3. ???4. Profit
3/22/2013 7:40:29 PM
This was pretty much a worst case coaching job. We had top ten talent, but we finished well outside of the top 10. Gott is on borrowed time from Sidney Lowe. If he can't win without lowes players, he needs to go.
3/22/2013 9:27:25 PM
skooiann and and others just had christmas in March! Just imagine how depressing this offseason would be if we'd actually lived up to expectations.
3/22/2013 9:33:20 PM
Disappointed in our defense this season. Not sure we have the talent everyone in the media kept talking about though. Brown and Leslie are 2nd round picks probably, Howell maybe 2nd round, I wouldn't think Wood gets drafted. Most top teams have surefire first round picks.
3/22/2013 9:57:22 PM
3/22/2013 10:58:45 PM
I never understood how people ever thought a coach that can't coach defense could truly do well. Herb had much more upside.
3/22/2013 11:02:39 PM
are we now back to trolling about Herb? fuck
3/22/2013 11:06:22 PM
everyone i talked to said:wait, wasnt nc state an 11 seed last year and made the sweet 16?and they made an 8 seed this year and lost one?"sounds like they are a growing threat."+1 for gottfried. we are still relevant, and on peoples' radars
3/22/2013 11:10:36 PM
i dont think anyone is mad that we lost. its how we lost.
3/22/2013 11:12:38 PM
As disappointing as today's result was, we are only two years removed from Lowe. If this is the best we can expect in year five I will be concerned...
3/22/2013 11:15:19 PM
i'm mad that we lost
3/22/2013 11:15:20 PM
I'm mad that we lost because1. we didn't show up in the first half2. the refs cheated us at the end.I'd have no problem with getting beat without those two pieces of bullshit.
3/22/2013 11:21:55 PM
i'm also mad at how we lost, but once we got it to a 3 point game and had the ball, and couldn't pull through, i was obviously mad we lost
3/22/2013 11:22:42 PM
i'm not mad at gottfried in the slightest. i think he wants to win really badly. if everyone were playing defense w/ as much intensity as gottfried wants to win we'd be great. but he can't want it more than the players.
3/23/2013 12:13:11 AM
I don't really blame Gott for how this all ended this year. We spent the entire season not playing much defense, not because we weren't able to play defense, and not because they weren't coached as to how to play defense, but because we were too scared to play defense. That really was a product of having only 7 players with Division I talent on the roster and 0 depth at the 4/5 spot.In all the games that were hard, tough nosed games with very little whistles from the refs for contact, we struggled. I think that was partially because we didn't adjust well and partly because they were scared to get in foul trouble. Losing Painter was a much bigger loss than I thought it would be going into this year. Having someone who was just serviceable to come into the game and allow Howell to be more aggressive on the defensive end would have been huge. This is a role that should have been filled by Vandenberg, but he proved to be unable to contribute at this level.Depending on who we lose to the draft and/or transfers and who comes back, we could have some quality depth next season, which should increase our ability to rotate players in/out of the lineup. Of course, if we lose Brown and Leslie to the draft and another player for some other reason, we'd be WAY worse off depth wise than we were this year.Either way, baring everyone deciding to stick around, our depth isn't going to fix itself overnight. Gott is still building a program and bringing in quality recruits each year. He's also been more productive in terms of wins/losses than we've seen in decades here at State. A few years ago we would have killed to be in a position to bitch about the things we're bitching about today. We went through multiple seasons of players who could not beat a press. We're miles ahead of where we were and I'm thankful for it.+24 credibility
3/23/2013 12:35:33 AM
Gottfried is not fast.
3/23/2013 10:18:45 AM
I'm not even close to being "on the fence" about him, but this season definitely has given me reservations. We obviously had the talent to be a much better team this year. Did we have depth issues? Sure...but that's where the coaching comes in. Did we have some personality and maturity issues? Sounds like it. But do you put more blame on the coaching for not being able to manage that, or on the players who were just too stubborn to buy in and did their own thing. Its really unfortunate when you look at this team and see one of the best, if not THE best, shooters in school history...one of the best rebounders in school history...NBA level (junior) talent in Brown and Leslie, and solid freshmen support in Warren, Purvis, and Lewis...and then have a mediocre ACC year and flame out in the first round. Its really disappointing and the future is definitely unclear. Gottfried has a similar history in Alabama (high level talent, inconsistent play)...you just hope NC State is a more solid program that he can build around and that he learned from his mistakes there.Despite all that doom and gloom...we still have lots of talent in this program and Gott has been recruiting well (although he has his work to do to fill out this class and keep up the momentum). If Brown and/or CJL come back...then I'm really pumped for next year. If they don't, then it should be interesting, but I'm cautiously optimistic. We need to build some depth and get a defensive identity (hopefully a good one).Would like to add late a criticism of the game yesterday. I don't think he coached a bad game...but he definitely mismanaged our foul trouble in combination with intentionally fouling at the end. I know he subbed Purvis in for Brown a couple times, but he should have done the same for Leslie. We should have had Lewis and Purvis...or fucking Jevoni Brown or Vanderburg...or someone other than Leslie in there. And there were a few times early when Brown was still in there with four fouls when he shouldn't have been. I just remember there being a few times where it was obvious someone should have been subbed out and it didn't happen and we just got lucky that the right guy had the ball and needed to be fouled (unlike the last play with Leslie).[Edited on March 23, 2013 at 10:56 AM. Gottfrieds real mistake this year was not giving jevoni Robinson any minutes. Unbelievable not to give a guy ecven a chance or bench someone as a teaching tool. Any good coach would have used Robinson some to see what he's got
3/23/2013 3:53:20 PM
yeah, that was totally his biggest mistake.the ACC and a final 4 would totally have happened otherwise
3/23/2013 5:45:06 PM
Face, give it a rest about Robinson. He was a walk on. His impact would have been negligible.
3/23/2013 7:23:03 PM
We needed a defensive presence. He might have made a big impact for us. But gott doesnt care about defense
3/23/2013 7:26:44 PM
Gottfried sees Jevoni in practice every day.
3/23/2013 7:28:21 PM
Good thing he's running low on credibilityhttp://zagsblog.com/articles/source-ucla-to-fire-howland/

Which of these does not fit?
3/23/2013 8:06:32 PM
Seems like a big mistake to fire him. Good coach. Shaka would be a good fit there I think.

you can't make excuses about depth when we had depth and chose to not play 2 guys all year and chose to sit a mcdonalds all american most of the year.
3/23/2013 10:35:37 PM
i liked Lewis' play during Brown's injury as much as anyonebut the last 2 games Lewis played (Temple, Miami), his 3 highlight plays were a 3-pointer, and two turnovers on fast breaks when we had numbershe still has a ways to goand who is the other guy we didn't play all year? i must have missed that

Stevens and smart wont leave. They want to turn their schools into duke with them being coach k. No reason for Donovan to leave as Florida is probably a better program than UCLA the past 20 years. The only 2 I could see leaving would be gottfried or jay wright[Edited on March 23, 2013 at 11:21 PM. 3/23/2013 11:19:46 PM
people are all "we have no bigs to steal some minutes" but jevoni and vandenberg sit on the bench all year. Its like he won't put a player on the court unless they are an nba prospect.[Edited on March 23, 2013 at 11:24 PM. Reason : purvis has more turnovers than lewis and got way more minutes all year. can't get a rhythm]
3/23/2013 11:23:30 PM
neither of them are even ncaa prospectspurvis was great the first 15-20 games or so before he hit the wall, his defense is lightyears ahead of lewis, and he doesnt throw the ball away on fast breaks with numbers, worst case he draws a foul and misses free throws[Edited on March 23, 2013 at 11:26 PM. he misses a layup/dunk?better than just throwing it to the other team like lewis did against the canes and owls
3/23/2013 11:30:53 PM
..... he had 1 turnover in each gamei'm not sure what you're arguing.ty was good against UVA in the ACCT where he actually got some minutes, which he did not against Miami or Templeboth players will be fine next year[Edited on March 23, 2013 at 11:38 PM. Reason : /]
3/23/2013 11:35:51 PM
Lewis has always been one of those guys that has to get in the flow of a game to be effective. Once he gets in rhythm, he's pretty good. He's not good with spot duty though.Don't forget that when Lewis played his big minutes against Miami and Duke, he had a combined 1 turnover (and 11 assists ... and 29 points)
