The lower end of Huffman's snow/sleet projections was 3 inches. .5" of ice was the high end. For reference.

It was sleeting when I woke up but now I don't hear anything. Storm's over, time to hop in the car and speed to work
1/22/2016 7:48:54 AM
Work closed

Pretty sure my office is closed, but let me pull out my two work laptops right quick. Whatever, I can work in my PJs and have beer when I want to, it's fine.
1/22/2016 8:11:44 AM
freezing drizzle right now
1/22/2016 8:19:09 AM
1/22/2016 8:37:24 AM
Frozen glaze covering everything here just south of downtown, including roads. There's a texture to the road ice though, so it's possible to drive on it, but probably not ideal Currently 27°F, which is surprising - I thought today was going to stay in the low 30s?
1/22/2016 8:38:55 AM
Roads aren't really slick at all
1/22/2016 8:52:28 AM
I thought we'd be in the 40s by now
1/22/2016 8:53:32 AM
So is it going to get better or worse from here?
1/22/2016 8:55:40 AM
forecast has been updated to no snow today, all freezing rain with a little sleet mixed in. The major rain that was forecast for today is now pushed to this evening when temps will be only slightly above freezing, so no significant melting expected (rain will still melt ice in below freezing temps because of the latent heat, but i don't think the rain will last long enough for much of a net melting effect)forecast for tomorrow is <0.5" snow with maybe a tiny bit of freezing drizzle[Edited on January 22, 2016 at 9:06 AM. the highest precipitation intensity (which isn't very high for us) will be probably around 1pm
1/22/2016 9:05:12 AM
It's been sleeting nonstop and hard for over 2 hours now in CH. Everything already has .1" of ice on it outside.
1/22/2016 9:09:52 AM
Pouring sleet now in cary
1/22/2016 9:26:15 AM
From my vantage point yes, but work is closed today and that's all that really matters.
1/22/2016 9:47:32 AM
News was showing a wreck of Poole rd where someone drive off the road, they showed a close-up of their tires and they were completely bald
1/22/2016 10:10:45 AM
^yeah they are showing a ton of accidents in wake county right now on the map. When will people learn that it's just not worth it.
1/22/2016 10:13:26 AM
These milk sandwiches are fucking delicious!

In Charlotte it's not milk, bread, and eggsIt's bacon, cheese, broccoli, and propane

Has anyone driven - how bad was it? Debating going 2 miles to Harris Teeter via Hillsborough st[Edited on January 22, 2016 at 11:11 AM. Reason : Arrove ]
1/22/2016 11:10:49 AM
^That answer depends greatly on the condition of your tires.I'm probably going to go out for a bit later this evening. FWD car, LSD and less than 10k miles on my all season tires.
1/22/2016 11:18:05 AM
Major roads are ok, side roads pretty icy
1/22/2016 11:18:08 AM
Not sure about Hillsborough st but in general around downtown it's just slushy, but slick in areas. What are you driving? I wouldn't be concerned driving 2 blocks in a FWD or AWD/4WD but RWD might be exciting if you are not experienced dealing with it. If you are only 2 blocks though, why not walk?
1/22/2016 11:19:51 AM
I'm anticipating some melting around 7pm
1/22/2016 11:30:20 AM
Avent ferry is pretty slick. Mostly snow cover, I don't think it's been brined. Centennial parkway is pretty bad.Gorman from tryon to avent is better. Looks like it's been brined. Still need to be careful on the hill.Supposed to get worse and have the heaviest precip starting at one.On the plus side, ruckus is open and pouring.
1/22/2016 11:39:33 AM
^^ where are you getting that from? I'm seeing nothing but FR for raleigh now, no rain
1/22/2016 11:48:50 AM
Trees seem okay at the moment but I'm worried about later on tonight. Do not want to be out of power all weekend
1/22/2016 12:00:09 PM
^weatherbug on my phone says rain from 7pm to 1am and the temp rising to 36 degrees. I was like dafuq? How is it going to get warmer after dark with this thing. We are getting some heavy freezing rain in SE Wake county right now.[Edited on January 22, 2016 at 12:00 PM. Reason : ...]

I just drove around my neighborhood for 5 minutes. 100% untreated roads. And grip is pretty good. Most of the road surface is a hard slush. But acceleration, braking and steering all fairly solid.Had a good time laughing at someone else driving around in a Durango (spotted them several times while driving). They were rolling along at roughly WALKING speed. LMAO

If your car has summer performance tires I would say definitely don't drive in this weather. Doesn't matter how new they are they're horrible in this.
1/22/2016 12:32:57 PM
I would not recommend taking your 335. You would probably be mostly fine with all-season tires, but there are a few spots slick enough that your back end could step out maybe even enough to rub a curb
1/22/2016 12:41:27 PM
These conditions are perfect for FWD. I can get my golf pretty sideways before the stability control says no more powr. Even when it's off, it's on . It does a real good job controlling a drift with the differential braking, but it will only allow a medium slip angle before it cuts throttle. Gotta ride that threshold and it's a blast.
1/22/2016 12:55:50 PM
I drive on ice and snow every weekend. Don't drive a RWD car unless you have at least all season tires and I'd be wary about even that. Ice is no joke. I see huge dually RWD trucks with huge tires stuck on main roads here pretty often. In fact on interstate 70 here you're legally required to have snow tires if you aren't driving a AWD/4WD when it's snowing. If you have a FWD car though go to a parking lot covered in ice and lock your parking brake and put cafeteria trays under your rear wheels then have some fun. [Edited on January 22, 2016 at 1:10 PM. Reason : RWD not FWD. ]
1/22/2016 1:07:07 PM
SW Charlotte not too bad. About .5" of slush, but cars are compacting it into a textured sheet of ice. Haven't gone out to the main roads to see, but I imagine they are all fine and clear
1/22/2016 1:09:12 PM
1/22/2016 1:09:40 PM
I ran up to Franklin Street for a few minutes to get some grub with my FWD Mazda 5. Did just fine. Only issues I found were just getting going a couple of times. Be careful but you should be fine.

Holy shit, it's friday?
1/22/2016 1:19:11 PM
1/22/2016 1:30:58 PM
Definitely. Although AWD with good all season tires versus FWD with snow tires depends on the conditions. I'd usually take an AWD vehicle with good all season tires over a FWD car with snow tires simply because you get more control and traction in the driving I'm doing (off road, very hilly, etc). If you're driving on flat ground without a lot of snow (just ice) then 4 good snow tires might be a better choice.

I love that video, haha.
1/22/2016 1:41:35 PM

Still just sleet in Chapel Hill. Haven't had snow since like 8 am, but almost constant sleet.
