It's no secret that Sidney is a terrible coach but today was just abysmal. Horner turned in an absolute subhuman performance out there and yet he played the last ten minutes of regulation AND overtime. Our huge lead was built by going inside to Tracy Smith and Ben McCauley. It was not built by falling down, getting stripped, being out of position, airballing threes, missing free throws, or giving up easy layups on defense. Why on earth did it not occur to Sidney to take Horner out when he was propelling VT's comeback?[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 4:02 PM. I know this question has already been asked, but why does Lowe ALWAYS call his timeouts before we cross half court? All it does is let the other team set up their press.

I heard because of Lowe's collapse today, Wall commited and then de-commited, and Costner is going pro right now, not even finishing the season.

i'm impressed with how javi has started to turn things around. put that in the development category.

Year 5 is going to be NCAA Tourney or fired. There will be ZERO expectations next year if Costner leaves and a likely 11th or 12th place ACC finish (if neither Wall or Cousins comes here -- which I see both as longshots) again. Hopefully he can build some momentum towards the end of next year with the developing players and go in to year 5 with a solid rotation...
2/8/2009 5:58:54 PM
^^Well...he's not a great coach or an amazing coach.Though I'd say he's a better at coaching than horner is at playing.
2/8/2009 6:13:37 PM
Lowe isn't a bad coach. He didn't do anything really wrong leading to our loss.Stupid reffing sparks the comeback for VT.looking at a somewhat accurate box score:22 TOs in the game. 5 by our "best player" Brandon Costner, and 9 from our PGs. We only forced 1428-39 from the FT line, including 4 misses at the end of regulation that would have won the game.Add in the lack players who can play defense inside (leading to 24 points from Davila, 21 from Allen, and 12 from JT Thompson) and that is why we lost. Smith can score inside, but he doesn't pass well, play defense, or shot FTs well. he's getting better, but isn't where we need him to be yet.Degand, Thomas, and Smith have all had reports of minor knee issues as of late, helping to explain substitution patterns.I'd say he's still credible.]

I still don’t think we have bottomed out. I don't think you guys truly grasp how bad of a hire this was. Like you just can't accept it or something. Trying to justify this atrocity that is our basketball program is plain ignorant.[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 7:02 PM. Reason : x]

^ that's the problem. He's less worried about the trap. For fuck sakes, think about what you are saying. How many times does this team turn the ball over in the press? He does this shit all the time, when there are no defenders in the back court while the ball is being brough up. Wait until the player crosses the half court line. This is coaching 101, no other team does this because it is a down right stupid thing to do.Since you know such a great deal about basketball, you must have noticed how during VTech's time outs how Seth's team responded to his game plan by scoring and playing great defense. I'm not sure what Lowe is over there doing during his time outs. We come out of our time outs playing worse than before more times than not. Too bad he doesn't use those time outs to get Smith, Thomas, or Williams out on the floor to replace Horner.[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 7:18 PM. Reason : .]
2/8/2009 7:11:49 PM
You can let them set up the press (which we beat rather easily today) or you can let them set up their defense and stop your shot. If we can beat the press, I'll take it with the possibility of an easier shot.

You optimistic people can blame everyone but Sid if you want. Our basketball program is shitty.[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 7:29 PM. Reason : .]
2/8/2009 7:28:05 PM
All Sidney needs is another 5 to 6 years and then maybe once he has all his players we can win maybe three ACC games a season.[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 7:33 PM. Reason : .]
2/8/2009 7:33:27 PM
and another thing, we should not have to watch our team blow an 18 point lead to Virginia Tech. Last I heard the only reason they are even in the league is because we needed another football powerhouse. I can't believe I wasted three hours watching this shit. If I sit down to watch this "basketball" team play another minute this season I hope somebody beats the shit out of me.[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 7:39 PM. Reason : []

We played not to lose in the 2nd half. And VT made some good adjustment at halftime.I hate to say it but Sid was out coached by a drama queen. Man I hate Greenberg.
2/8/2009 7:37:56 PM
2/8/2009 7:44:00 PM
oh really? You must believe that was Lowe's best coached game yet too. Giving away a game when you are up by 18 points. Trying to run the clock out up by 4 points with 3 minutes remaining, instead of attacking the basket inside which we had been doing successfully the entire 1st half. Instead we'd just pass or dribble the ball around until Virginia Tech stole it for easy fast break highlight dunks.[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 7:56 PM. Reason : .]
2/8/2009 7:53:45 PM
How many games does this make that we've had a lead and Lowe was completely out coached down the stretch? His end of game coaching is horrible.
2/8/2009 8:05:01 PM
2/8/2009 8:16:37 PM
You have to fire Fowler before you even think of firing Lowe. Are the big time donors really that pleased with Fowlers job? Is it only the poor schlubs like me that realize he needs to go so we can get a competent AD to perform the next coaching search? If we had a remotely competent AD three years ago, Rick Barnes would be our coach.

The more I think about it, we got completely fucked by the refs in the second half. They were responsible for at least 9 VT points on bullshit calls, including Vasaillo's 3 point mystery foul in front of the basket. We sucked it up, but the refs certainly didn't help.
2/8/2009 9:12:29 PM
the refs never help...surely you guys have seen enough state games to know that....
2/8/2009 9:15:25 PM
My guess is that either Smith came out because of concerns about his knee, or maybe in response to VT focusing more on (and having some success) defending in the paint in the 2nd half. Horner actually presents some perimeter threat, Smith absolutely does not. You guys want Sid to make adjustments, but if all he has is good inside players and the other team starts shutting them down what else can he do but put in a Horner or a Fergie? He can't magically make Smith be a threat from the perimeter and he can't magically make Herb's white boys be great players. And I agree, that stretch after the bogus intentional foul had to be absolutely heartbreaking for the team, not to mention Fells. He made an awesome play and was pretty much rewarded with an 8 pt run for the other team.

sucks that Lowe missed all those late game free throwsand how many of Costner's 5 fouls were actually legit fouls? 2?[Edited on February 8, 2009 at 9:43 PM. Reason : .]
2/8/2009 9:38:49 PM
Sid should have made the refs give him a T after the Fells foul. Often after a coach gets T'd up, he starts getting calls. That's what happened to VT. Of course Greenberg should have gotten the boot for giving the ref's the stare down after the 1st half ended. The ACC should fine him for that.

2/8/2009 10:24:42 PM
was not lowes fault. Our team sucks. The end. What a CHOKE.
2/8/2009 10:27:09 PM
This one is not entirely his fault. Horner an 86% free throw shooter misses two to win the game. You have to make your free throws to win the game.
2/8/2009 10:41:54 PM
i told my buddies when we had the ball near the end of regulation after vasilla hit the tying jumper that it wasnt a 50/50 odds deal of whether or not we score and win in regulation or go to overtime, but it was 50/50 odds if we would even get a shot offit was close too, but johnny thomas was in good position for the steal and halfcourt prayer
2/8/2009 11:16:27 PM
Some questionable coaching, yes. I really don't understand why Smith didn't play more in the second-half, or why he hasn't seen more minutes this season. If was due to his knee-injury tonight, then fine. Otherwise, I think his attributes outweigh his deficiencies, and he was on tonight. I don't enjoy shitting on Horner, but (i think) a lot of his minutes should be more evenly distributed b/n Smith, Thomas and Fergie (and yes, I'm aware they don't play the same position). But here's a serious question to those who want Sid's head this season: Would you be willing to miss out on the next two recruiting classes that we already have lined-up? I realize that its still speculative, but judging from their hs play we have some real ballers coming in the next two seasons. If you haven't followed, check the stories and videos on the wolfpackhoops blog. They all look to be solid offensive threats, and several have NBA potential. If nothing else, Sid's definitely done well on the recruiting trail, with the exception of getting a reliable pg yet (Mays should be solid after some more experience). And I know many will claim that's it's only a "moral victory", but to be a finalist on 3 of the Top10ish '09 recruit's is a good thing. And we've still got a chance with two of them.I know a lot of people aren't happy with Sid's team's play right now, but do you truly think that kicking him to the curb would be beneficial to Wolfpack basketball? Keep in mind, Sid was a great pg and floor-general in his day, he has pleny of coaching experience, he's dedicated to the university, and he's still relatively new to coaching college kids. (and i am a realist, and i know this is probably wishful thinking, but the season is far from over right now. i've accepted that the tourney is a very long-shot. we've had some epic meltdowns, but we've been in every game and we haven't lost one that we were supposed to win. there's been many stretches where we've played great basketball. and yes, many stretches where we've played horribly... i think much of that could be rectified with a solid pg, and we have a few lined up - mays, zobrown, and harrow...wall?)
