did i miss it or did they not talk about existing iPhone 3G customers upgrading to 3GS and pricing?
6/8/2009 3:07:46 PM
so basically just faster and better camera. I think the OS upgrade will be enough for me to wait til next year.
6/8/2009 3:09:14 PM
Hmm..So I just went to att.com and tried to upgrade, and it isn't giving me the subsidized price. It even says $499 if I want to upgrade to a regular 3G (I'm still on 1st gen) So yesterday I could have upgraded to a 16GB 3G for $299, and today it costs me $499 for an 8GB 3G. I'm just gonna go ahead and assume they haven't gotten all the kinks worked out yet. Cause that's some bullshit right there if that's true.
6/8/2009 3:11:37 PM
Apple saved me $300 today because I can't see any reason at all to upgrade from my 16GB 3G. New features would be cool, but they aren't that cool. Oh well, maybe next year.
6/8/2009 3:27:01 PM
yeah I will also be waiting
6/8/2009 3:34:41 PM
Yeah, none of the hardware updates seemed that impressive. Even the battery life improvement was modest at best. Sticking with 3G here.
6/8/2009 3:36:56 PM
is the voice control 3Gs only?
6/8/2009 3:39:35 PM
when is the new OS available for non-devs?
6/8/2009 3:54:17 PM
I saw someone said that MMS won't be available until later this summer, but does that mean that you can do the upgrade for the 3G and get MMS or would you have to get the new phone?
6/8/2009 3:55:10 PM
^its all software. its just that AT&T was taken by surprise today at the announcement of MMS and tethering so they have to play catch up. /sarcasm.^^June 17th
6/8/2009 4:06:26 PM
God damn, the apple website is fucked right now. It keeps giving me all these stupid errors about trying to choose a day, when the only options are what phone I want, and what store I want to pick it up from.
6/8/2009 4:09:36 PM
3gs, its gonna be 699 for people without upgrade eligibilityi can get it for 499 according to apples site...when i try to reserve..i get an error saying to choose a day...
6/8/2009 4:10:22 PM
I think there's an echo in here.
6/8/2009 4:14:10 PM
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/att-3g-upgraders-pay-200-more-for-iphone-3g-s/Current 3G customers pay an extra $200. Ain't that some shit. I can see why they had to do it, but I'll bet that brings the upgrade rate down enormously.
6/8/2009 4:29:13 PM
I have no intention of dropping the money to buy the new one, but I'm happy about the upgrades to the software. Copy Paste and MMS were two of the reasons that I was thinking about switching back to the blackberry. Now maybe this'll keep me with the iphone for a little longer.
6/8/2009 4:30:04 PM
i ain't payin' $700.
6/8/2009 4:35:07 PM
so if we 'pre-order' we don't have to wait in line forever?
6/8/2009 4:37:40 PM
^^It wouldn't be $700, it would be $500. I mean, I still feel your pain and all. But there is a bit of a discount from the completely unsubsidized price.
6/8/2009 4:38:10 PM
^
6/8/2009 4:43:18 PM
http://www.apple.com/iphone/compare-iphones/#footnote-1
6/8/2009 4:48:40 PM
^ wow are they bending people over, or is that normal?
6/8/2009 4:52:51 PM
^^where are you finding this because when i looked it said if i'm an iPhone user who isn't eligible I would get a $200 discount but not the full discount.
6/8/2009 4:54:20 PM
^i quoted my source.
6/8/2009 4:54:52 PM
yeah, that's disappointing. when the 3G came out, they gave 1st gen owners the discounted price to upgrade to 3G. i def won't be upgrading from my 3G anytime soon if that's true
6/8/2009 4:55:21 PM
i think they did that because the actual price of the original iPhone wasn't subsidized, but the 3G was.
6/8/2009 4:55:53 PM
6/8/2009 4:57:09 PM
unfortunately i couldn't get one the day it came out, i was still in a 2 year contract. 9/26/2008 was the day i was eligible for an upgrade, and you can bet i was at the apple store first thing in the morning, haha.maybe the $200 discount is for people who are at least a year into their contract.
6/8/2009 5:00:18 PM
This supports the $200 discount for current 3G customers too:
6/8/2009 5:00:46 PM
^i see the quoted bit that evan posted now at the very bottom of the page but its contradicted every where else on apple's website. And when i did the pre-order process it said unable to verify your account please select an apple store to reserve one or whatever. But i think thats because i used the wrong email. I wasn't sure if it wanted what i log into att wireless or what i log into uverse with where i actually pay my wireless bill.
6/8/2009 5:01:03 PM
then why is it telling me $700?
6/8/2009 5:01:32 PM
well thats gay!jk
6/8/2009 5:02:56 PM
told you guys. upgrade was mediocre, apple doesn't give shit for a "discount".
6/8/2009 5:03:41 PM
6/8/2009 5:05:23 PM
yeah...having one shipped to the house the day of would most def beat waiting in line even if i lived in an apartment above the apple store
6/8/2009 5:06:30 PM
And now that I've "completed" the online reservation thing it just sends me an email letting me know to show up at the store I picked and talk to a rep. It does mention the model I selected but makes no mention about how it's being reserved for me. It even mentions first come, first serve. Basically they're like, thanks for being interested. Now stand in line. Fuck that. I can't believe how poorly Apple is handling this whole situation. Seems like nobody is happy right now. Not current customers, not prospective customers, no one.
6/8/2009 5:24:08 PM
I'm going to give it a day before i try again and see if its just a overload issue or a bait and switch issue.
6/8/2009 5:29:02 PM
FWIW, I couldn't get one shipped either. Same error.
6/8/2009 5:43:44 PM
Do any of the mosquito apps work?
6/8/2009 6:23:11 PM
just verified the 299/399/499 upgrade options. But I get the "free upgrade" in december, so I'll be waiting.
6/8/2009 6:43:13 PM
in all honesty im more excited about the laptop upgrades
6/8/2009 6:44:29 PM
these upgrade options are completely arbitraryi just got my iphone and new contract a couple months ago...yet I just pre-ordere a 32gb 3gs for $499...it said I was eligible for an early upgrade..
6/8/2009 6:57:12 PM
Has anyone cracked open their 3G? My Ringer/Mute toggle button on the side does not work anymore since I dropped it...and I wanted to see what was up. Anyone have experience or not recommend it?
6/8/2009 7:37:09 PM
^^ arbitrary? $499 for the 32gb 3GS is what apple's website says for your situation ]]
6/8/2009 7:40:02 PM
6/8/2009 8:08:16 PM
i don't think anybody mentioned it on here yet but i find it interesting that the all black, matte finish that has been going around the rumor sites turned out to be false. as far as i can tell, the physical design didn't change at all]
6/8/2009 9:07:08 PM
^yeah...and their 3GS commercial confirms that theory as well if you haven't seen it yet.
6/8/2009 9:10:57 PM
i wonder what kind of conversations engadget et al are having with their "sources" now"hey man...wtf?"
6/8/2009 9:15:55 PM
We have 2 1G iPhone's on my account, about 1.5 yrs in. I am eligible for the $299 (because I'll have to pay more for the data plan and 200 txt messages), but I'm not sure how this will work on the other line. I'd assume I could upgrade the other line if I wanted before 2 yrs for $299.
6/8/2009 9:32:14 PM
Apple's website is still being retarded. For some reason I thought to try it over at att.com. Just pre-ordered a 32GB 3GS, scheduled for free overnight shipping to be delivered on June 19.
6/9/2009 2:25:14 AM
I get the feeling I'm going to need to call AT&T to get an iPhone since I have such a bizarre plan at the moment and don't want to lose my discounts.
