I'm so glad I don't work at Wolf anymore. That Kiwi sales pitch on the previous page is the same shit, recycled one year later. Kiwi, youre not gonna take over chit chat

I'm just surprised that the D40 hasn't gone down in price in over a year. That's the exact same sales last thanksgiving cause I helped my friend get that package. It's a great entry level camera, but good god, I think they just a little too massive on the production scaleOh, btw, I saw the most frightening thing last night at the Canes game. One of the other sports photographers slipped and fell on the stairs. In the corner of my eye, I saw a 1D with a 400 f/2.8 IS fly down about 20 steps before hitting concrete barrier. The clunks it made going down the steps were gut wrenching. And you could definately tell, he was not a happy camper. The actual chassis on the lens broke in two, mount on the lens fell off, mount on the body is fubar, and there's something loose in the body. [Edited on November 27, 2008 at 6:13 PM. Reason : ]

^Ugh...that makes me cringe thinking about thatMy turkey day lunch. Dessert isn't shown. I've never shot food before...but you get the idea.

haha Photorob it's just a filler until I go to school. Luckily I'm seasonal so the pressure really isn't on me to sell cameras though the added commission is nice.I wouldn't recommend anyone work at Wolf but I am learning a lot from the people who do work there about cameras. We get such a shitty discount on cameras too.
11/27/2008 7:20:30 PM
I was talking to my Dad yesterday and he's thinking about getting my mom a DSLR and said he was looking at the D40. I said LOL thats what i have. Thats kinda funny.wut, just so you're clear, Nikon and Canons have VR or IS in the lenses, not the bodies. I don't feel VR is needed on the 18-55mm, but I would def want it on anything longer. Its a must on the 55-200mm.Kiwi, what kinda discount? Check out my rad duck:http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3060/3062447071_b0d81dfaa4_b.jpg

7%
11/27/2008 7:28:41 PM
Ah. actuall with the Australian dollar so low right now (0.63ish) a lot of stuff is actually cheaper here. I got that Nikkon 55-200mm VR for $130US. Not bad. 7% probably isn't worth bribing you for. I wouldn't mind a D90 though... gah, can't some fall off the truck?
11/27/2008 7:35:31 PM
or fall into my hand right before i quit?JAYKAY

Post lots of pics once you get to play around with the tokina 11-16! That's the next lens I think I'm going to buy but I haven't known anyone that actually owned one yet.

This is supposed to be a good bang for the buck macro:http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-105mm-Medium-Telephoto-Cameras/dp/B0002P19XK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1227838587&sr=1-1Nikon and Canon mounts available of course.
11/27/2008 9:19:23 PM
17-70, is more of what I'm looking for.
11/27/2008 11:57:21 PM
I think i'd like to get a 50mm prime, i'll probably get a nice old MF one if i get an old camera. With that i'll just get some tube extensions and that outta do me good enough for macro on the cheap. 50mm F1.8D is $100 (MF only on D40)Set up extension tubes are $170.
11/28/2008 1:21:11 AM

dannydigtl, for me just starting out I probably dont need anything right now other than the D40 and standard 18-55 lens right?
11/28/2008 2:32:30 PM
I purchased the d40 with the 2 lenses and was kinda upset when I found out that you get the $250 55-200 non-VR lens... instead of the $300 55-200 VR lensI've taken 250 pictures since monday and am glad to have a DSLR instead of a film camera to learn on... Ie haven't taken any pictures I'm proud enough to share yet I really want the $100 a 50mm f1.8 at least so I can shoot low light and it's cheapI also want the sigma 10-20 lens b/c on our farms I found out the reason you need to go further out than 18mm[Edited on November 28, 2008 at 3:43 PM. 11/28/2008 3:15:12 PM

it's the sheer volume of unc bandwagon fans that bring the money.
11/28/2008 5:11:27 PM
Whos a bandwagon fan?
11/28/2008 6:56:19 PM
def get the 55-200mm with VR. Its has different and better optics in addition to the VR.If i get an old 50mm, it'll be the 50mm F1.4 AIS. the F1.4 and F1.8s are both around $140 in the old AIS MF only. Theyre supposed to be really nice lenses. But they won't meter in a lot of nonPro bodies and of course are MF only.Or the new Nikon 50mm F1.8D is only $100ish and will meter properly, but still MF only for the D40/50/60. Nikon will be releasing a new AF-S 50mm F1.8 this month but it'll be like $450GoFigure, check this out: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/users-guide/index.htm. His "Optimize Quality" settings for jpeg mode help a good bit to add a little color and sharpness. the default is a little drab and soft. I also use the -0.7 exposure compensation and it normally does about right.[Edited on November 28, 2008 at 10:44 PM. Reason : fdf]

11/29/2008 3:10:26 PM
Hmm, we could play around with a speedlight and some gels.
11/29/2008 3:45:56 PM
OOF has a huge spotlight he said we can use. I can try and grab a neutral density or daylight compensation blue gel from work.
11/29/2008 3:49:03 PM
Sounds cool.If any of y'all have an external speedlight, I'd recommend picking up one of thesehttp://www.adorama.com/ROSB.html?searchinfo=rosco%20sample&item_no=2Put the gels in front of your flash lens and have some fun "painting" at night.

Nikon's new studio camera is out. D3x. Price and release date isn't set yet, but since the D3 is around the 5k, it's probably gonna be around 8-10k mark. The neat thing about it is that you can reduce the MP down to 10 and shoot at 7fps. A big plus for those who want a studio camera that can pull double duty for sports.Although, I'm excited to get my hands on the new 5D's. The school is talking about picking a pair up for next semester. http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/28/nikon-outs-d3x-in-own-pro-magazine/

11/30/2008 11:59:07 AM
why buy cs3 when cs4 is out?And I want that rig setup for the 5D. Pretty badass. Makes me think of the red's now. Didn't realize they have future products for 2010 already listed on their website. They have a video camera that's planned to record at 28000x9334, that's 261MP at 25fps. I like how some of their systems will take on canon or nikon lens with an adapter.http://www.red.com/epic_scarlet/
11/30/2008 2:23:22 PM
^ well damn, I didnt know about CS4. Hopefully now CS3 will be in a price range I wouldnt mind paying for
