to win? why would he NOT want to go there? UCLA is a top 5 job.

We had more talent than UNC this year and more than Duke with Kelly out.

Duke, UNC, Kentucky, Kansas and Indiana are better jobs, without putting more than 5 seconds of thought into that

UCLA has as many titles since the 70s as we do

well i know how many titles each team has since the 70s, so i know i'm right about that fact

and why is UCLA a better job than any of the 5 i mentioned?

4 of them have titles (some multiple) since UCLA last won one...and you said it yourself, Indiana is the favorite this year, whereas UCLA will be lucky to make it out of the first round

well if you base a job on recent team performance then indiana would have been similar to ncstate. you are talking about the programs while i am talking about the jobs.

top 5 programs and top 5 jobs are two different things.

Calipari made $6.2 million this year to take his team to the NIT

sounds like the best job in the country, hands down

why is UCLA a better job than the other powerhouse historically dominant NCAA programs?

you act like the programs I named are a bunch of scrubs

swap out UCLA for IU and you'll redeem yourself

interesting note -- if UCLA wins their first round game, they'll move into 7th all time in wins. And they began playing 10 to 25 years later than teams 1-6

Wooden was a great motivator and great molder of young men

he was also a pussy afraid to schedule games in the eastern half of the country

the last time UCLA was truly relevant, Shabazz Muhammad was a toddler

Ed O'Bannon is like 40 years old right now

and don't get me wrong, i LOVE to act like UCLA is the best program by bringing up their title count when UNC or Kentucky fans are pumping their chests

but UCLA the last 15 years is basically Butler

i know you're a huge Pac-12 fan so you'll disagree, but those are the facts

you are both talking about programs. ucla is a not a top 5 program. no one is debating that. any post about wins is speaking on the program and NOT the job.

calip would be on hotseat if he didn't win it all last year.

UCLA isn't the job it was 20 years ago

hell, UConn is a better job nowadays, high school recruits actually remember them winning multiple titles and can name players who played for them

Academics make it much more difficult. Fanbase is smaller and following in K's footsteps could be miserable. ACC is too competitive and theres no recruiting base.

^^they've put basically 2 good players in the NBA in the last 20 years, you just named them

UConn has put a bunch in...Ray Allen, Rip Hamilton, Okafor, Caron Butler, Drummond looks like a budding star, even Villanueva is known by players more than Tyus Edney

oh yeah, 3 titles in high school players lifetimes > 0 titles in high school players lifetimes

^Duke is a top 5 job, period

which is why they'll be able to hire anybody they want when K retires, while UCLA will be scrounging for Mark Gottfried

K has never produced a great pro. although Kyrie could end up being pretty amazing, but he barely played for K. don't know if that's relevant to this program/job debate or not

guys like Grant Hill, Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer are (were) very good NBA players

but Duke has 4 national titles in the last 25 years, and are one of the most dominant programs year in and year out

we can argue UCLA vs Indiana, but i dunno how people cant admit that Duke is clearly a top-5 college bball program AND job right now

the program is determined by the coach and although the wrong job can prevent a coach from having a good program things like wins, pros, and recent activity are more of a reflection on the coaches program than the job itself.

things like wins, pros and recent activity are what help define a program / great job

if not, UNC wouldnt be a top 5 job, it would all just be a result of Dean, Roy, MJ and a few titles

^me too...but LA already has an even better bball program...the Lakers...Indiana has been fertiel college bball ground for decades

while Calhoun would go in and recruit kids with his triple bling

-ucla has the west coast on lock.

-it is the alpha school in the best recruiting state in the country
- it is the alpha school in a top 5 recuriting city in the country
- a good coach could easily dominate the pac12 (easy power conference with no other dominant coaches or historically dominant programs in sight) for years while still getting the exposure of a power conference
- top notch facilities
- top notch campus
- located in westwood (what 18 year old kid would choose the others over that? all else equal)
- rich history
- more realistic expectations than programs that have had more success lately.

[Edited on March 19, 2013 at 12:15 AM. Reason : competing wit arizona for all of the best recruits.]

[Edited on March 19, 2013 at 12:15 AM. Reason : j]

its basically the same as the others except its isolated on an "island" with unlimited resources and no competitors.

[Edited on March 19, 2013 at 12:18 AM. Reason : island meaning no syracuse unc next door.]

You can't say that about any other school. Thats why its arguably the best job in the country and definitely a top 5 job. If you took history away from the other programs at the time of the current coaches hire then they have nothing.

no one gives a shit about uconn's last title. it was a total fluke. did we get sick recruits from the 83 run or did we have to bring in damaged goods?

I'm just saying that the best coach ever developing and carrying out his career at your school doesn't automatically make you the best job ever. You can't just assume anyone can walk in there and do what K has done.

Academics and competition will make it very difficult for people to win like him there again.

[Edited on March 19, 2013 at 12:28 AM. Reason : Wooden is not why ucla is such a great job but yeah its good just like k is good for duke]

if UCLA was STILL a top-5 coaching job, you'd think they would've done better than they had the last 20 years

I mean, I'd rather live, coach and recruit in LA than East Lansing, but Michigan State is also a better job than UCLA

If it isn't results and records then what makes a job good?

I mean NY is a pretty good place to live for a wealthy individual (like a prominent college coach) but all their programs suck. So I don't think you can really factor in location.
