I just got a 360 for Xmas, I don't feel like sifting through 84 pages of this thread. Can someone recommend some decent bloody/violent games? I generally like to play FPS games on the PC, but I am open to console ones.

So my friend just got his xbox back today after getting the Ring of death. Tonight we tried to "chat" but it wouldn't ever allow him to connect to me. I sent him a recorded message and still wouldn't let him look at it. He said xbox was tellin him he needed to contact xbox support. but he could send me a text/voice message just fine. after a few reboots he was able to play my message but still no chat. weird I know. He told me he had to tinker with his network settings to get xbox live to work to work earlier today. Im wondering what the hell he did. his NAT is moderate but I still think it should work. I know info is limited but i wasn't at his house and he didn't understand the questions i was asking any ideas???

A few questions if you guys don't mind helping me with my new 360. I tried connecting to Xbox Live yesterday but ran across a few problems. I have a regular cable modem that connects to my PC via ethernet cable. I tried just unplugging my PC from it and plugging the 360 ethernet cable into the cable modem but it didn't work. When I did the auto configure thing, it found an IP but when it tested the connection it said that the IP connection failed. So I hooked up my PC to the internet again and did an ipconfig. Sure enough, the IP address it told me didn't match the one the 360 found automatically. So I manually entered that IP address into the 360 and ran the test once again. It got through the IP connection part this time but failed at the dns part. I once again found the dns info via ipconfig /all in the command prompt and entered the info manually but it still failed to find the dns info. The auto detect found all my dns stuff to be 0.0.0.0 so I'm pretty sure something is fishy with it.So after this, I tried connecting to my PC so I could stream some stuff. I unplugged my PC from the internet and just plugged my 360 into the PC via ethernet port. No luck with this either. It once again gave some kind of IP error. I think this might have something to do with the fact that the PC wasn't connected to the internet while I tried to stream from it, but I didn't think that would be a problem. Does my PC have to be connected to the internet for the stream to work? Am I able to stream via USB?Thanks for any help guys, I'm such an xbox n00b.

^my bro and i had somewhat similar issues at my parent's house. the tests would sometimes fail at the IP and/or DNS part, and always fail at the MTU part. we ended up having to disable the firewall within their windstream router and it worked fine after that.add: we used the same way you did- disconnect from pc and run to xbox, no router involved[Edited on December 28, 2007 at 8:52 AM. Okay I got it to connect to Xbox live correctly by manually entering the MAC address although even after I disabled my firewall on Windows, it still fails the IP test. Any ideas? My OS is XP Media Center with Rollup 2 and Windows Media Player v11 (if that helps any)

has anybody played ace combat 6, and is it worth purchasing?
12/29/2007 4:37:09 AM
there's a demo on XBL. it really depends on if that type of game is your cup of tea. I did not enjoy it, but it is hailed as an excellent game.

anybody having problems with xbox live today?
12/29/2007 6:17:16 PM

12/29/2007 6:22:25 PM
is it all of live??? Cuz halo 3 has been a bugger all day. ITs gotten a little better this evening but not much. Takes up to 10-15 minutes to find a match.

So before I was asking about some way to convert .VOB files to .AVI files so you can watch them on your 360. Well I got a program called WinAVI (http://torrents.thepiratebay.org/3929774/WinAVI_8.0_with_serials.3929774.TPB.torrent) and it works really well. I tested it on some movie I have called The Restless which started off as 4 .VOB files, the first 3 about 1 gb and the last about 500 megs, so roughly 3.5 GB...converted the 4 VOB files into 1 1.6 GB DivX .AVI file that looks great on the 360 The conversions are fairly quick as well. I'm on a relatively slow laptop and I'm converting movies in 45-60 minutes]

So what games are yall looking forward to in '08?
1/3/2008 8:02:20 AM
the simpsons is fucking fun! i HIGHLY recommend renting this.
1/3/2008 8:36:52 AM
MLB 2K8 is gonna be the bomb. I dont know who else plays baseball games, but its going to run at 60 fps, and have all the minor league teams and a bunch of minor league parks (Durham Bulls?)GTA4 is also going to be awesome but I will probably get that for ps3 because I am used to the playstation controls for the GTA games.
1/3/2008 8:57:08 AM
fwiw, the camera (angle) controls when you are driving, if i remember correctly, where better on the xbox for gta-sa, and it probably will be similar in gta4. i think the control scheme overall in the xbox is better; can't quite remember what makes them better, but i play both versions enough to make an informed opinion. but yeah if you are used to the ps control scheme, it is probably worth it to you to get the ps3 version, but keep in mind that you will NOT get the two exclusive expansion packs that purportedly will add 30 hours of gameplay that are for the 360 version.[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 9:25 AM. I really want Dead Rising, but I've run out of dollars for things such as this
1/3/2008 10:11:33 AM
quick question about playing movies through the 360. I'd rather not try to set up streaming from another computer due to networking difficulties. How do you play videos off an external drive? Someone up ^^ said only certain drives would play, but I haven't been able to locate or play the movies I have on a USB drive or a external HD.I thought they were doing this for DRM reasons, and I haven't seen any workarounds. little help?
1/3/2008 11:09:12 AM
you have to put the usb directly into the xboxput all your stuff here and you will not have any probs whatsoever my computer > shared documents > shared videoand if you have not done go into media player 11 and go the sharing option (forgot which menu) and it will set up sharing between the 360 and your pc. hth.[Edited on January 3, 2008 at 11:18 AM. 1/3/2008 11:18:05 AM
you're talking about USB strait out of my laptop and into the xbox?Is there no way to play directly off a external harddrive
1/3/2008 11:27:16 AM
I've had success with Western Digital Passport external HDDs. I've got a 250 gigger that I paid about $150 for and all you have to do is plug its USB cable into the USB port on the front of the 360, go to Videos, and hit the X button for Change Video Source and select External Device. You should have any music, photos, videos, etc available. The thing I like about those WD Passport drives in general is that they only require a single USB cable to both send and receive data, as well as provide power to the drive. I have not been able to successfully plug any other HDDs into the 360 that required a separate power adapter. Also I have a couple 4 GB Lexar USB flash drives that also can be plugged directly into the 360 and will access your media just fine. I picked a couple up for about $45 apiece (ie dont buy direct from Lexar, instead buy from tigerdirect or ecost or some other discount online site)Link to WD hard drive: http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=317Link to Lexar USB flash: http://www.lexar.com/jumpdrive/jd_firefly.htmlNote: I have personally verified that up to 250 GB WD Passport drives and up to 4 GB Lexar FireFly flash drives will read directly off the 360's USB ports, but I can't confirm that any larger capacities will or will not workAnd I haven't used either of these for DRM reasons, but simply because I already have my movies on external drives and this way I can just plug it up and not worry about if my computer is on, etcAlso download WinAVI if you want a good program to convert .VOB files (DVD video rips) to DivX .AVI files (able to be played on the 360)]
