I think you're right on one count... she doesn't want her diploma to be revoked. And I bet the agreement between UNC and her is to let her keep her diploma in exchange for her silence. Even the University of Phoenix would take away a former student's diploma if they had the kind of evidence UNC had, but yet UNC hasn't done it. So yeah, perhaps they're not paying her off, but they've got ways of keeping her quiet.

i realize this. an academic impropriety could be anything from writing notes in the margins to writing the entire paper, which is why i said no one knows

^^ I doubt they would hold out so many players for so long and have a press conference with Thorp telling everyone how sorry he was if it was just a matter of a couple notes being written in the margins...

well you might be right, but that still doesn't change the fact that no one knows exactly what they have. some may have been held out because it was suspicious but required tutor corroboration. since she's not talking, there's a delay. they all could've done shit worthy of expulsion for all i know, but as of this second we don't know.

Convicted, no. But purt near everyone has accused him of something at some point.

I mean, he was nearly universally known as a dirty coach.

you'd expect Butch and UNC to know about what was going on/what the NCAA has told them...you would think if a player was innocent they would be playing right now...just more evidence that UNC has been cheating

If she came out and spilled the beans on everything, she would be seen as a hero and martyr to everyone outside of the UNC fan base...think of all the interviews, the guest appearances, the book deals...

with the right publicist, coming clean could be the greatest thing she ever did in her life

Then why are their 100's of guys on IC saying the NCAA is the devil for delaying this. Why aren't they intelligent enough to know that the tutor's silence (if the players are innocent) is to blame for the delay. If the players are guilty, then the tutor's silence is golden. EITHER WAY, the NCAA is not to blame for the holdup academically. Are you saying you're not part of the majority on IC that belong in a mental institution?

i assume you mean the goons on the free board. most people i talk to understand that the honor court is in charge right now, although it's unknown whether we'll have to submit those findings to the ncaa. for the agent stuff, however, i have a hard time believing the ncaa is moving as fast as possible.

It's not like the NCAA usually does something like this in a month. Shit usually takes more like a year.

Add to this multi-pronged investigation that the NFLPA is getting involved, and Secretary of State is doing an investigation, and everyone involved has already hired a lawyer....esp. the part about everyone having a lawyer.

It'll be a year from now before everything wraps up, and we're four months in already.

Stingray always seemed / seems like a good guy to me...sure he is a UNC fan on a State board, but he has always been pretty objective, relatively speaking, and pretty cool in general...he is without a doubt the type of UNC fan that I support being able to post and share his opinion on TWW

that being said, can't believe you're still in denial about whats going on...a dozen players still arent cleared...I'm pretty certain there was some wrongdoing, not just from MA

[Edited on September 27, 2010 at 9:56 PM. Reason : ^come on, go easy on him...99% of UNC fans are less objective than this guy]

Ok, you've lost it. USC was a 4 year investigation over ONE player, let me write that in several forms 1, uno, un. You have an entire defense under suspicion and you expect the entire NCAA staff to work 22 hours a day for you guys (they are also at Bama, Florida, etc etc, there is a world outside Chapel Hill with real people if you weren't aware).

Perhaps if your program had confessed immediately like Dareus it would have been wrapped up in 2-3 months. But alas, Baddour has convinced everyone (and I'm guessing you too) that he's "doing everything he can to speed this up." He's doing any and everything he can to cover this up. The only reason the academic stuff came up was because some idiot on your football team mentioned it while being interviewed for agent stuff with a team of NCAA investigastors in the room. So Baddour immediately says, "full onslught investigation at once!!!!" Yes, very ethical Mr. Baddour, way to lay down the law! UNC will be lucky if this thing is halfway figured out by Christmas in a legitimate investigation by neutral parties. Well we know that's not the case. UNC is investigating UNC. Why not let the people that get caught speeding investigate weather they were speeding and go with that verdict! How about letting Braylon Edwards give himself the DWI test and let his verdict stand! Brilliant.

^^ you seriously have issues

from everything i've read, the ncaa had full access to whatever they wanted, so yeah i would think that in return they might try to expedite things a little bit. and by all means, if the players are guilty then so be it, but it seems pretty lame that they're sitting without knowing what the penalty is. maybe that's just my unc-slant, but if russell wilson was in trouble for agent shit, wouldn't you want to know what he was facing?

and usc stonewalled the ncaa at every turn, so that's part of the reason it a) took so long and b) was a severe punishment

Quote :
"I'm pretty certain there was some wrongdoing, not just from MA"

not denying that at all, but like i said above, i can't imagine what in the world they could possibly be looking at that would prevent them from making a ruling. if they've gotten access to phone records, email, bank statements, etc., what more could they want? if they're gone for the year then say so

except the tutor... And unfortunately for UNC, as long as she's not talking, ~10 players will never play. They can't risk having someone play that can later be found ineligible if the tutor decides to talk. This is all just a PR move by UNC. Hold the players out saying they are waiting to be cleared. Claim Butch will still be the coach. Salvage what they can out of this year. Then after the season....CLEAN HOUSE!!!

Suspending the 12 players for the year or Firing Butch would create too much havoc right now. The UNC football program has too much $$$ riding on this season to create a backlash from the fanbase for taking those actions. Just keep telling everyone that everything will be alright, then shake up the program in the offseason when all the UNC fans and media will be focused on basketball season....

OK,

Seriously, if this were us (and I'm fucking glad it's not),

I would demand that the tough questions get answered. Brakk or no Brakk, there are some serious fucking allegations getting thrown around, and the silence from blue heaven is deafening.

1. If there wasn't something BIG going on, there would be multiple people defending the program and there are not. They are ignoring this scandal. 12 fucking players are out with ZERO info on whether they had an illegal beer or killed a hooker. Well, maybe not zero, but very little (no pun intended) at this point.

2. I think the questions are not being asked because they know they'll get the same "I can't comment" or "the NCAA has asked me not to mention this issue" response as in previous PCs.

3. If this was State, were I a big-money booster, I would have pulled my donations and support, because it's obviously not enough to keep agents out and to support passable athletes. I would also be demanding our coaches resignation. I could actually see drinking the koolaid if our coach was Nick Saban.

What the fuck are they trying to do over there? They are without a doubt the most idiotic, shady, and dishonest threesome (BMFD, DB, HT) I've ever seen. There has to be something more to this or someone would want to save face rather than ride the Titanic down together.

see the problem here is none of the boosters really gives a damn about their football seats...

UNC is a basketball school and that's all the donors really care about.

The powers-that-be at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill say they are carefully investigating the unfolding scandal enveloping the school's football program.

Why? What else does anyone need to know?

Just the basic facts paint a sordid picture, a worst-case scenario of college athletics run amok.

A tutor allegedly writes papers for players; the same tutor happens to be in the personal employ of the head football coach months after she is let go by the university for being “too close” to players. An assistant football coach has a close relationship with a sports agent; the agent signs up clients who played for the coach. UNC players introduce players from other schools to runners for sports agents or marketing companies; they fly to out-of-town parties attended by agents. A sports agent runner and alleged cocaine trafficker hangs out at the school's football facilities.

Again, what else is there to know?

The basic facts leave little doubt that what's occurred is the worst college sports scandal to hit a UNC system school campus since a basketball point-shaving scandal of the early 1960s.

The response from some the school's supporters seems to be that this kind of thing happens everywhere.

Really? I'm not aware of any athletic department tutors at other schools accused of wrongdoing who coincidentally were employed by the head football coach.

As for the rest, some of it may go on at a few other schools — the football factories of the Southeastern Conference. Are the standards of the University of Alabama the standards by which the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill now measures itself?

If so, Butch Davis should be fired for losing, not rule-breaking.

The goings-on within the UNC-Chapel Hill football program have tainted the entire university and 16-campus university system. To believe otherwise is to put you head in the sand, to think the that NCAA has come to town to pat school officials on the head and tell them what a swell job they've done.

But in Chapel Hill, there's no outrage to be seen.

Athletic Director Dick Baddour. He says the school's internal review aims to “protect the integrity of the university.”

Does he mean the integrity that's already disappeared on his watch, or any remaining integrity that slips away with each passing day that Butch Davis remains head football coach?

The school's chancellor, Holden Thorpe, should fire Davis and Baddour. If he won't, he should be fired.

There's no reason to wait. None of the details, playing out day-by-day in the newspapers and on the Internet, are going to mitigate the fact that Davis and Baddour allowed the worst sports scandal in five decades to occur on their watch.

Scott Mooneyham writes about North Carolina government and politics for the Capitol Press Association.

One thing that seems to be getting lost here is that unc "self-investigated" the academic side of this. Why anyone thinks that UNC wasn't spending that time silencing key figures (aka the tutor) is beyond me. The NCAA is getting a carefully concocted version of the academic situation at UNC. Most likely they are sacrificing the f-ball team to protect basketball (don't tell me you had that many starters in football cheating and no one on the basketball team seems a little strange doesn't it). The media needs to be doing it's job and demanding an independent investigation (probably too late now UNC has had a chance to cover their tracks).

Quote :

Already was one investigation about him allowing an agent (I think wichard but not sure) access to his players at Oklahoma.

That statement about Blake never being accused of anything is just plain false. Blake was at Oklahoma during the Switzer years where some of the most rampant cheating imaginable was going on. The term Black Santa did not happen because of this investigation. StingrayRush get your head out of the sand dude.

The backlash from the Alumni and Profs who dont care anything about sports greatly outweighs the backlash that might come from Wal-mart nation. I think it would be in UNC's best interest to deal with this sooner rather than later, if they want to show that they have any kind of academic integrity remaining.

^^^^ accused by whom? he was rehired as head coach 2 years later, so obviously the OU administration didn't feel he was that dirty. look, i freely admit that he probably was doing shady shit, but based on his continued employment and even being brought back as HC to the school that was knee deep in shit with him on staff, surely if there was proof of wrong-doing he wouldn't continue to find jobs.

that being said, a lot of people were skeptical when butch brought him on and in hindsight, it was the wrong move.

^^I havent followed most of your argument, but clearly based on the mess over in Chapel Hill you can't be making the argument that being re-hired/employed/trusted by a University has anything to do with whether you are dirty or not. At OU, winning would be on the list for coaches above all else, so I think the re-hire proves next to nothing about his tendencies.
