this is crazy, we're going to have a whole new team next year. DAMN we need to land another big man now! It's weird to think that we were so stock full of big men like 2 seasons ago and now look at us.

losing degand really won't hurt us too bad if he leaves. Javi has kinda locked PG down right now. And then you have mays and brown that can run the point or play the 2. But please, if he leaves don't rush out and offer some 2* white dude that has potential or some junk like that. I'd rather just sit on the scholly and try to sign talent next year. Just cuz we have a scholly doesn't mean we just HAVE to burn it for crying out loud.

i'm all for saving schollies but at the rate we're losing people we'd be back down to 6 'shipped players + bryan nieman

after vandenburg/the JC guy we're going after play out though, I do hope we save for safer bets in 2010

imagine a team that is trying to run an offense similar to what duke runs. now imagine that same team without the suffocating pressure defense, significantly worse ball handling, slower, and only a fraction of the outside shooting. now give them red jerseys. that is our team next year.

i cant stand posters like ^

lo brown makes our ball handling much better and faster
scott wood has range from the parking lot and has a dead eye for the basket

go away until you actually know something about our incoming class

not that scary...Costner was an inside guy; shit the last few games he wasnt an outside or an inside player.

Howell is a monster so we will be just fine next year

We had the slowest offense and the worst defense in the ACC this year. Brown and Wood are nice pieces, but they aren't going to pull us up from the cellar on their own.

oh here we go. so i disagree with you, therefore i know nothing about our incoming class, right. listen, i know about our incoming class. brown is going to be an outstanding player, i'm convinced. i'm actually more excited about wood than anybody because i've accepted brown's ability(and am happy) but i believe wood is a real sleeper and is going to be a great acc player. having said all of that, brown will probably not solve all of our problems and neither will wood or howell. i just don't think that having one great ball handler and one great outside shooter is going to be enough.

[Edited on March 23, 2009 at 5:37 PM. Reason : i really hope Brown turns out to be All-World. It's what we need. ]

CJ Williams can knock down shots
Julius can actually create and knock down shots
Horner can knock down open shots
javi can hit when left open
wood can hit from Benson

Tracey Smith is a beast
Horner will does a decent job cleaning up
Howell is a monster

brown can almost do it all

not a bad looking line up...small but not bad

i agree with everything you just said. i'm just saying, if we are forced to run the same kind of offense that duke runs we will not be as successful. The reason i think this is because although all of our guys can knock down shots like you said, they still can't do it as consistently as dukes guys, except probably Wood. I don't really know why i got off on duke, i was just venting. But I hope i'm wrong.

What I'd like to see us do is to continue to prioritize going down low to smith or howell and then kicking it out. And, with the addition of Brown, give him the ball and drive him to the hoop, and either score(duh) or look for the kickout. That should open things up, yes? If we just swing it around and try to hit threes we gonna lose.

can you name another team that can?

i think we need to give these guys the benefit of the doubt until we see them play. it's impossible to predict how most high schoolers' games will translate to the next level.

no i can't. and that is exactly my point. that's why duke is really the only team that can be successful with it the way they are. that's why we can't run that offense. this is my point!

I'm not saying we can't be good next year. It's possible, but we need our freshmen to be huge for us. I just tend to think that it's unlikely for us to be good next year.

^ I hear you on the concern for next year. State's definitely going to be a small team next year. Not much way around it.

The key for next year's team is going to be whether individual players are willing to step up and go full tilt all season. Say what you want about Lowe's recruits, but in this past year no one was questioning their work ethic or wondering why they'd underachieved (generally speaking).

Javi - overachieved (I know I certainly didn't see him becoming one of our leading scorers late in the season)
Smith - overachieved (became our primary post threat as a SO)
Mays - expected, maybe slightly overachieving (wasn't expected to contribute right away)
CJ Williams - definitely overachieved by becoming a key contributor down the stretch
Horner - overachieved (on both ends of the floor in spite of all the hate)

Now going into next year State will need players to step up to fill the big void left by "the big three." CJ, Mays, Javi, and Horner all need to continue to improve. Wood and Brown need to step up and provide some depth at the 1 and 2. Howell needs to step up and give some minutes at the 4.

That's a lot of "ifs" right there, but that's what it boils down to for Lowe. What can you do with just your players? If State continues to NOT play defense and turn the ball over, then Lowe can and should be history. If however State overachieves next year, has a decent finish, and locks down another solid recruiting class (i.e. GET LESLIE and another big guy too), then I'd say Lowe should get another year.

Make no mistake though... Lowe has his work cut out for him next year...

You're saying this team doesn't need a big body (he's supposed to be 6'7" 205 now) who hustles, rebounds, plays D, and constantly works on his game? Are you fucking kidding me? This is also a kid who was 5'10 his freshman year in high school so he's still adjusting to his new height, and he still likes to bang inside.

Give me a break man. Also, someone on PP made a good point about the recruits sidney has brought in. Honestly, he hasn't "missed" yet on a high school prospect. I can see every single one of them who is here so far (Smith, Javi, Thomas, Mays, CJ for sure) becoming really good 4 year players then you throw in JJ who is playing for the fucking cavs right now.

We need guys like this who will get in practice and bust their knutesac...then do the same in games. I don't care what he looks like on paper, if the mother fucker hustles, rebounds, averaged 25 a game in high school and just dominated all of the other senior D1 prospects in the state in an allstar event....sign him up.

I hate our fans. I wish some of them would just go ahead and jump (mostly the people over on PP acting like this is a sign that sidney sucks dicks or something...its not...we have several scholarships to play with at this point)

I like what James said over on pp....you get people on the message boards bitching that your staff missed on the Warren kid at Ole' Miss and the Maynor kid..then the Curry brothers, but when you take an underrated recruit who you think can turn into that type of player, everyone is bitching and moaning that we can't recruit and we're settling for shitty players and our program is in serious trouble.

its bullshit really. If we didn't have the scholarships open, I'd question the decision, but we have 2 more open for this season WITH this guy in the fold. We'll be ok.

I know that I saw that this year he measured in at 6'6" 205. If he grows another inch he could definitely be used in the front court. Hell DeJuan Blair was 6'7" 240 coming out of HS (he's now 6'7" 265 as a Sophomore).

This guy does sound like the quintessential late bloomer. Let's not shit on this kid, especially since he truly wants to be here and it was his dream to play for State. You don't find too many of those types of guys out there. I know Simon Harris dreamed of playing for State and even though he wasn't an impact player for us he was very valuable to the team. He gave us a boost in rebounding and energy every time he came in and played hard all the time. Determination can overcome talent, especially when it comes to rebounding. Just look at when Simon out rebounded all of our front court in an early season game this year, or Duke's players who hold their own on the boards b/c of how determined they are.

that team went 17-10 in the regular season and every game was a fight just to survive. they weren't even supposed to be in the tournament and nearly got eliminated in the first round by pepperdine. determination is a very good quality to have and it's exactly what we need.

I'm saying we don't need another undersized post player, especially one who is obviously a project rather than someone who is ready to contribute immediately. You can talk up 2 star prospects all you want (what "underrated" prospect that commits to us isn't talked up like he's the fucking man on here?), but the reality is that unless we pick up some more big time talent we're going to fucking suck next year. Also, I couldn't care less if he's "missed" on any prospects or not according to you, those prospects haven't gotten us back to the tourney yet or made us a respectable program again so really they haven't done shit.

Davis is gonna be sick. I heard Charleston Southern was hard after him. Can't believe we stole him from right under their noses. He is a solid as they come when talking 2 star players. I'm sure we could field a team of 1 and 2 star guys that bust their ass and want to be at NC State. Would we win any games? No, but I just want to see our team play hard. Now we just gotta start beating out Elon, NCCU, and Wilmington for recruits.
