Literally no one will care about this, but last night in Paris, I saw a French band called Zebda. I first heard a song of theirs 10 years ago when I first started taking French in school. Really really awesome to see them live after all this time. It was also a lot of fun singing along with a crowd in a foreign language. Although they did play Police and Thieves by the Clash and obviously sang in English, so that was pretty awesome for me as probably the only native English speaker out of the ~1,800 people there.Although imagine the stereotype of French people not wearing deodorant...but at a hot/sweaty concert
4/4/2012 4:50:21 AM
"Police and Thieves" is a Junior Murvin song, not a Clash song.
4/4/2012 6:51:13 AM
Yeah, that's what I meant. I just listen to the Clash version more.

We Were Promised Jetpacks is playing in the main showroom at Motorco on Saturday. They're not something I can't stand to miss, but I missed them the last time they were in the Triangle and I'm going to be gone this weekend for Easter. I think they're worth seeing if you're around.EDIT: With Bad Veins and New Cassettes. [Edited on April 4, 2012 at 4:27 PM. Reason : c]

Last Friday's Perfume Genius show was a snoozefest, but I thought Cassis Orange and Parenthetical Girls were good, full of energy and totally had their mellow harshed by Sufjan Jr. Just got back from Of Montreal and that was a good, fun, crazy show.

not an issue of being too cool, believe meit's an issue of them releasing horrible album after horrible album, and hearing they rarely play pre-Ugly Organ songs during their sets

^^^We sold over 800 tickets to that last year. They gave us 1,000 tix to sell for it this year. It's completely insane, I don't get it.[Edited on April 5, 2012 at 8:43 PM. Reason : s]

People discussing the Beach Music Festival as an excuse to get drunk under the pretenses of 'I don't get it' in this thread.
4/6/2012 12:49:22 AM
The funny (shitty?) thing is you know who's coming in to buy TBMF tix the second they walk through the door. They have a uniform and they never, ever shop for music (case in point regarding whoever said it wasn't about the music). The worst is when they bitch about the $2 service charge. It can be a pretty big headache.

magnetic fields sounded really great tonight, great show
4/13/2012 12:08:52 AM
Kinda hated the Magnetic Fields show.Would have been better at a seated theater or something. Maybe I'm getting old, but I just can't put up with heat and 6'5" people standing in front of me and people shoving past me and yelling "SCUSE ME BRO" for two hours of stripped-down versions of songs that were already pretty sedate in the first place.[Edited on April 13, 2012 at 1:07 AM. 4/13/2012 1:04:20 AM
^I'm not even old and that pisses me off, especially with more "thoughtful" bands where it's like STOP FUCKING MOVING AND TALKING AND LET ME LISTEN TO THIS BAND YOU ASSHOLES.But that's Cat's Cradle.
4/13/2012 3:39:42 AM
I saw Magnetic Fields once, and that was enough.Between Stephin's well-documented hatred of live performance, their refusal to do anything meaningful in the live percussion realm (whether that's because they won't get someone other than Claudia or they're just being persnickety, I don't know), and the normal problems associated with a quiet band doing a club show, it's just not a good experience.
4/13/2012 3:56:36 AM
^I thought it was a great experience last night; I really enjoyed it and a large part of what I liked about it WAS the lack of any percussion. It was strange at first because it felt like they just went right into the songs, but it put more emphasis on the string arrangements and harmonies, which happened to sound just great last night, what with the songs being rearranged a bit to play up those elements. And with Stephin, you definitely never got the sense that he was happy to be there, exactly, but he didn't do or say anything really dickish either, and at this point, it's just part of his personality, and part of the whole package with the Fields. You just have to accept that, despite the fact that he seems to be pretty insufferable as a person, the music is still great. Not to mention that it isn't all about Stephin live, or at least it wasn't last night. Shirley Simms is an underrated member of the band, her eight-string ukulele playing was spot-on, especially juxtaposed against John Woo's playing on the acoustic guitar. Shirley and Claudia sang as many, if not more, songs as Stephin. Merritt's stage banter was downright pathetic between songs, though, I will say that.EDIT: Also I thought the crowd was surprisingly quiet and respectful last night. I usually don't like quiet bands in club settings either, but it happened to work well last night.[Edited on April 13, 2012 at 7:43 AM. Reason : n]

Glad you guys are talking about this. Had free tickets to Wednesday's show, and that was easily the most boring show I've ever been to in my life. I think I dozed off standing up.
4/13/2012 10:12:00 AM
I'm pretty tired of people saying "it's the Cat's Cradle," like there's some different mentality there or something. When King's regularly and consistently books national touring acts on par with Cat's Cradle, you'll see it's "not just the Cat's Cradle." People are dickheads everywhere...
