There are some lactose-free cheeses. Most aged or hard cheeses are lactose-free, as the lactose is drained and then consumed during the fermentation process. From Livestrong:

Well that gives me hope...
9/1/2011 4:39:03 PM
I'm lactose intolerant. Some cheeses wreak havoc on my stomach, while a little bit of aged cheddar doesn't really bother me.
9/1/2011 4:42:55 PM
i was vegan for years.it's not as hard as you think.it is hard to get calories in that way though.
9/1/2011 4:44:15 PM
Does a vegan diet make you gassy?Seems it would, based on consuming beans and cruciferous veggies.[Edited on September 1, 2011 at 4:53 PM. Reason : r]

I read somewhere recently certain cheeses don't have lactose in them. Sam I would do a google search to see if you can find any info. Gluten free and lactose free products have come a long way. Plus there's tons of cool blogs and websites online devoted to amazing recipes that are free of those products. It'll take a bit of an adjustment but hopefully you'll start to feel better.
9/1/2011 5:09:00 PM
lol at joie wheezing at candlessam did they diagnose with gluten and lactose allergies, or is it just part of an elimination diet? If you do turn out to be lactose intolerant you can always use lactaid pills.

Also, for gluten-free recipes, be sure to look for GF bloggers. I love this one:http://glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com/Also, Sam, since you're the cupcake goddess, Betty Crocker has a great GF cake mix. Just add Jello pudding mix to it for additional taste/moisture ... amazing! Here's a recipe I tried recently:http://glutenfreebetty.blogspot.com/2010/10/gluten-free-red-velvet-cupcakes-happy.htmlOMG ... so good! And bad at the same time. Oh, and black bean brownies are AMAZING if you're looking for a good GF dessert. Also, Babycakes has a great cupcake book with GF, Vegan, Dairy-free recipes:[Edited on September 1, 2011 at 5:45 PM. Sam let me know the next time you're in town. My bf's sister gave me a gluten-free baking cookbook that you're welcome to borrow!
9/1/2011 5:45:03 PM
Thanks guys all these tips are making me feel betterRight now it's technically an elimination diet until the blood test results come in
9/1/2011 6:05:20 PM
anheuiser busch makes a gluten free beerso there's still thatim sure it's shitty though

So I took a 55 minute tabata class and only got through 45 minutes of it. I COULD NOT do the last 10 minutes. It ended with a nice small puke in the gym toilet. I think if I weren't pregnant, I would be able to do the last 10 minutes. I am going to try to get through the whole thing next time.[Edited on September 1, 2011 at 8:40 PM. Reason : goals]

Dear Samwise16,I hope you are not broken in ways that impact your cupcake making.Best wishes,Stein

I'm going to continue to make them for other people... Maybe I can learn a gluten free recipe that doesn't suck so I can have some for myself. The babycakes stuff looks amazing
9/1/2011 9:09:39 PM
Babycakes is amazing. It's one of the best bakeries in NYC and LA. Also, no joke that the Betty Crocker GF mixes are fantastic if you make them with Jello pudding.
9/1/2011 11:27:37 PM
Yeah their website had some yummy looking stuffThe thing that makes me a little about the Betty Crocker mixes is... I make my stuff from scratch. :\ I know it will be a challenge, but I'm willing to try. I will still make some things regular for other people (i.e., I plan on selling pumpkin bread in clinic come October) but I'll try testing my GF recipes on them. I know one of the new girls in our program has Celiac so I'm sure she would appreciate it I had a big bowl of Reese's puffs this evening since it'll most likely be the last time I am able to eat them Tomorrow is officially GF/LF day 1. I have green apples + blueberries + honey for breakfast (and some hot tea or coffee with soy or almond milk I guess), and I'll probably get a salad at lunch.. :\UGH SALAD.
9/1/2011 11:45:28 PM
Steak for lunch, girl.Steak for lunch.
9/2/2011 12:35:48 AM

9/2/2011 8:05:43 AM
My struggle will be snacks for clinic... And I died a little inside today when I realized I can't have skinny cafe au laits anymore and I hate soy milk... Maybe Lucy's will have some almond milk
9/2/2011 8:47:19 AM
Going back to the breakfast thing, it's amazing how starving I am at 9pm when I don't eat a big breakfast in the morning, even though they are 12 hrs apart. Also, you morning work out people, what do you eat right before workout? I want something small but also something that will keep me full an hr and get my blood sugar going. I usually do a banana but I can only handle them green and it seems they stay green for one day before going I tried peanut butter crackers today but damn if that wasn't the hardest thing to eat ever hahaha I had to have milk![Edited on September 2, 2011 at 8:57 AM. ^ When I use to work out in the morning, I found small nutritional bars did the trick. I found several decent tasting Balance or Clif bars...or even a Kashi. Fruit either didn't satisfy my small morning hunger or didn't sit well on my stomach.
9/2/2011 9:01:43 AM
Out of curiosity I googled lactose free creme brûlée (one of my favorite desserts)... There are recipes for coconut creme brûlée I flipping love coconutSo I am a little happier now. But fuck soy milk.
9/2/2011 9:25:22 AM
I've had chocolate almond milk before and it wasn't half bad. Then again, it was chocolate and I'm a glutton, soooooooooooooooooo
9/2/2011 10:06:53 AM
^^My wife drinks coconut milk (the kind you get in a carton, unsweetened). She just adds vanilla and stevia and says it is pretty good.Coconut oil and coconut milk are great for cooking.
9/2/2011 10:11:30 AM
Word, thanks. Also, is walmart protein powder ok nutritional wise? I just dont want to pay the gnc price, and dont even know if gnc is any good. lolAlso, when I work abs should I do back as well? I'm going to split days; arms, legs, abs, shoulders, back.... ?? then the next week do a class then alternate.
9/2/2011 10:19:25 AM
so you're going to do a whole day of nothing but abs?
9/2/2011 10:23:24 AM
Well, cardio plus the strength training and not just the abs a woman thinks of when we say abs but the waist region I suppose. 4-5 different exercises working different muscle groups in the waist area.
9/2/2011 11:18:35 AM
What is your definition of strength training?
9/2/2011 11:27:03 AM
exercises that build muscle, what are waist exercises not considered strength training anymore? Is the only way to strength train is to do the entire body each day? I dont get why you're asking that question
9/2/2011 11:32:37 AM
Just trying to get an idea of your definition of it.My definition of strength training is lifting weights that are challenging in the 1-6rep range. IMO, body building would be working in 8-12+rep range.Plus, IMO, strength training is more about working movements than individual muscle groups. It's about getting certain movement patterns stronger rather than toning up a certain body region. It is arguing semantics, but it matters because the results are different.[Edited on September 2, 2011 at 11:56 AM. Didn't want to work out today, but I did, and I'm one step closer to being back where I was physically.Glad I went ahead and did it.
9/2/2011 11:57:24 AM
I would just think that waist exercises may not be considered strength training because if you are working your whole body each workout then you are stabilizing your workouts with your core anyway and don't have to do special exercises for your abs. I don't really know. That is kind of how I like to lift weights. Use multiple muscle groups that have a core stability?[Edited on September 2, 2011 at 12:23 PM. 9/2/2011 12:23:11 PM
^I don't even bother to train abs anymore, because so many other exercises I do work the abdominals. squats, lunges, standing presses, bentover rows, etc.
9/2/2011 1:10:32 PM
Does anyone have RunKeeper Elite? I use the free app and I love it, but it would be neat to be able to see more graphs and improvement. I just don't know if it's neat enough to spend $20/year on it. :/
9/2/2011 1:27:50 PM
Whoops, apparently I'm retarded. My bodybuilder friend says don't bother abs if you do the other stuff correctly. My bad, yo, my bad.
9/2/2011 10:02:05 PM
Guess what I learned today? Ordering GF at a restaurant is harder than I thought
9/2/2011 10:29:49 PM
Sam! If you like PF Chang's, they have an AWESOME GF menu!!!Also, as a general rule of thumb, it's best to avoid Italian restaurants and sandwich joints.Stick with larger, meat-based entrees or lighter salads. The cheese and croutons are the last thing they add, so it's easy to avoid those toppings. Also, if you get nervous about salad dressings, it's okay to bring your own.[Edited on September 2, 2011 at 10:34 PM. Reason : ,]

Dude I was thinking of pf changs today... I noticed that last time I went!I'm already sick of salad tho
9/2/2011 10:41:02 PM
Sam have you tried the different flavors of soy milk? Vanilla, Choc. etc. Same goes for almond milk. I've been drinking whole milk my whole life, but I don't mind either of those.
9/3/2011 4:50:24 AM
