LOL. I didn't even notice the kid. That pic is the one that the guy I bought it from took, so not my cat, not my mac, and not my kid. Shotgun is SPF.

I am looking to get something for my wife that is compact, reliable, and has decent power. I am not really into firearms so I am not very knowledgeable about the subject. Could some of you give me some suggestions?
1/12/2012 10:30:20 AM
^ Look into a small revolver for her. She doesn't need to worry about jams and other complications with a semi-auto. I'd suggest looking at the Ruger LCR. It's lightweight and reasonably priced.
1/12/2012 2:46:55 PM
^^ I would post that question in the discussion thread here:message_topic.aspx?topic=503107
1/12/2012 3:24:54 PM
might be interested in picking up an LCP for the right price, if any of y'uns got one fer the sellin'
1/13/2012 1:25:54 AM
^ Not sure how much you're trying to spend, but you can probably pick up a brand new LCP at the gun show this weekend for approx $275. Hard to beat that for a brand new gun.
1/13/2012 8:38:50 AM
[Edited on January 13, 2012 at 8:39 AM. Reason : double post]
yep, best price i found at the last show was $269+tax on a brand new LCP. a lot of folks are asking more than that for used ones. that lady didn't make much money on that gun.
1/13/2012 8:44:11 AM
wow, that would be the right price. looking for something to get my (small) gf into shooting comfortably, eventually I'm gonna make her take a cc course for personal edification if nothing else
1/13/2012 10:26:51 AM
I'd put her behind a 1911 before a little pea shooter like that. It's much harder to develop good technique when you haven't got enough gun to form a proper grip.
1/13/2012 10:47:06 AM
^agreed
1/13/2012 11:42:02 AM
well rest assured she's learning the basics on all my guns (what I feel confident enough to teach her correctly, anyway, as I'm still a relative novice myself), including my rifles, 12ga, .45acp, .357sig, and .44 (on the way). Mostly because I want her to be comfortable enough with ALL firearms in our house such that if she ever had to use any one of them in an emergency, it would require as little thought or additional fear as possible. The impetus for the LCP is because it's something that she'll identify with as "her own" (yes, it'll be mine and in my name until she can carry) and be much more apt to pick up and use correctly if something ever happens when I'm out of town. I'd rather her be confident and sure with something that she can grip and shoot well rather than risk using one of my bigger pistols and miss/get it taken away from her and used against her before she can get a round off. It's a great sign that she immediately fell in love with my G32 when I brought it home yesterday, hopefully that holds up after her first day at the range with it.[Edited on January 13, 2012 at 12:13 PM. Reason : keep in mind, she's pretty small...the G32 looks like a cannon in her hands]

Still looking to sell my LCR .38SPL +Pcomes with holster, box, etc.about 100 rounds of .38 +P with it for $400
1/13/2012 8:57:13 PM
see I think she should carry a revolver but she's dead set on automatic
1/13/2012 9:13:26 PM
Leupold scope sold.
1/13/2012 11:55:43 PM
^^ I prefer autos. A decent auto that's kept remotely clean doesn't have jamming issues. If it does, it needs a little break in--you need to shoot more...Either that, or it doesn't like a certain brand of ammo--you need to shoot more with different brands until you find something it likes. Oh, and if you aren't proficient enough to easily clear a jam when it happens once in every few thousand shots, maybe, you aren't proficient enough to be carrying a gun to begin with, and you should shoot more.I do agree that little pocket pistols aren't good for learning to shoot. They aren't even good for shooting if you know what you're doing, and beyond that, they're just kind of unpleasant to shoot due to their feathery weight and tiny grip surface, even in a mild caliber like .380. I have a Kel-Tec P3AT, and am accurate enough with it to be totally confident with it as a defensive weapon, but it sucks in every way aside from being able to stash it in your pocket. If you can't conceal anything else, the P3AT/LCP/TCP are the best option by default. Otherwise, they all suck, haha.[Edited on January 14, 2012 at 12:34 AM. Reason : When it doubt, shoot more.]
1/14/2012 12:31:29 AM
preaching to the choir, my friends. just keep in mind the eventual owner and that her lifestyle, clothing, body size, preferences, and hobbies are likely decidedly different from ours. besides an LCP or similar ain't exactly breaking the bank for a little trinket to dick around with that may occasionally be appropriate for carry
1/14/2012 12:53:40 AM
see, in my mind, an LCP's only value is for carry. it's just not fun to shoot.
1/14/2012 12:56:29 AM
exactly. it's a worst-case but better-than-nothing option that a small girl can fit on her person or in her small accoutrements. Can you load the LCP to +P, out of curiosity?
1/14/2012 1:00:02 AM
ruger says not to. i don't know that i've ever even seen any.90 gr federal hydra-shoks aren't far behind standard pressure .38 special in energy and is pretty much the standard for .380 ACP personal defense ammo. my LCP feeds them well.[Edited on January 14, 2012 at 1:24 AM. Reason : adwf]

FFL or CCW only. Asking $450 (located in GSO, but can travel to Raleigh). I will have pictures up later this week.
1/17/2012 12:19:34 PM
oooh man that springfield is enticing
1/17/2012 1:45:27 PM
dave, are you set on the LCP for your girl? because i've got this bodyguard 380 for sale you could try out. comes with 3 mags, desantis leather clip holster, and a bunch of ammo.[Edited on January 17, 2012 at 2:01 PM. Reason : actually shoots better than my LCP i think]
1/17/2012 1:59:29 PM
No, especially not after holding a bunch of them at the gun show. I know they're solid enough little pistols but they aren't really designed for longevity and not one person I've talked to said they're any fun to shoot. I know that isn't really a concern in a purely concealed defense pistol but if it's no fun to shoot then she's not gonna want to shoot it and it'll be dead weight in her hands. Besides, I know her hands are much smaller than mine but I could barely get any purchase on the thing and I'm not gonna buy a pistol that I can't grip. Might be interested in the bodyguard, though I've never really looked into them. Doing so presently. What do you want for the package?I will say though that at this point I'm more interested in picking up a full-frame .45 and a shotgun (I think my Ithaca is totalled ) as well as reloading equipment. She likely isn't going to take her CC class for a while and in the meantime I want her to learn to shoot on my big boy pistols. buuuuuut a fool and his money are soon parted...]

pm incoming
1/17/2012 11:05:34 PM
^^What is wrong with your ithaca?
1/17/2012 11:13:20 PM
model 51, the bolt/carrier (not sure what it's called on a shotgun) is jammed up and the tab that you use to rack it back is broken or sheared off. Took it to a gunsmith and he said it wasn't worth it to fix. I'm still open to second opinions, though, because I'd like to have it working for sentimental value
1/17/2012 11:17:36 PM
if it has sentimental value, then you'll just have to pony up and have the gunsmith fix it. if it's locked up, you'll most likely do more damage if you tried to fix it yourself. it can probably be fixed, but it'll cost almost as much or more than a similar replacement would cost.
1/17/2012 11:24:15 PM
^^ my offer still stands. I have the same gun. More than happy to take a look at it and see if there is anything I can do.
1/17/2012 11:43:56 PM
it's got some sentimental value, but it's not the end of the world if it's just junked. I'd probably pay more than I should to have it running again but it's definitely not "priceless"I told my dad (who gave it to me, it was the gun I was using when I took my first dove as a kid) today actually that it was likely totaled and his reaction was basically "thought so, screw it. what else is new?"]
1/17/2012 11:44:39 PM
May be interested in the parts if ur gonna scrap it.
1/17/2012 11:46:33 PM
I will keep that in mind. I'm gonna take it by one more smith for a second opinion before I do, do you or anyone else recommend any in particular for shotguns?somehow missed your post altogether, check PM--[Edited on January 18, 2012 at 12:01 AM. Reason : asdf]

1/18/2012 12:22:31 AM
hopefully soon I'll test drive both the LCP and Bodyguard. thread redirect, anyone have a glock 9mm and/or .40 barrel they'd be willing to part with? Trying to get my g32 into functionally a 9mm, .357sig, and .40 triple threat. You know, for the apocalypse and all.
1/18/2012 12:50:23 AM
is it simply a matter of swapping barrels?
1/18/2012 1:14:41 AM
barrel only for .357sig to .40, as the mags are the same.barrel and mag for 9mm to .40, but only for range use. You would need a 9mm ejector and extractor for a full conversion. There is a slight chance of slam fire due to different ejector shapes.
1/18/2012 1:39:08 AM
still have those leupold bases and rings and the crossbreed supertuck for a Kahr CW for sale.also adding this S&W Bodyguard 380. comes with everything pictured. i've got $375 in it and i just need to get my money back on it.and this pre-accutrigger Savage Mark II .22LR w/ a Bushnell Sportview 3-9x32mm. comes with a 10 rd and a 5 rd magazine. this shoots good and i killed a lot of squirrels with it this season, but i want something higher end. $140.[Edited on January 18, 2012 at 9:34 PM. Reason : better pics of the savage back on page 78. i bought it from Brandon1]
1/18/2012 9:32:51 PM
^^ how does that happen in a glock? i thought the firing pin spring would keep that from happening? also having trouble conceptualizing how different ejector shapes would effect a slamfire, or anything other than a jam or FTEnot saying you're wrong, I just don't know much about glocks and am trying to visualize the problem[Edited on January 18, 2012 at 10:18 PM. Reason : and whether i should avoid a drop-in 9mm conversion altogether]
1/18/2012 10:11:59 PM
^^That Savage shoots great and has a very nice trigger!
1/18/2012 10:22:46 PM
^ Larger ejector possibly tapping the rear of the 9mm cartridge when chambered? It might not directly hit the primer, but a hard enough hit next to the primer might set it off would be my guess.
