Shot another friend's birthday party Friday, which happened to be a Toga/Roman theme. First time getting drunk while taking pictures and I'm actually quite amazed of how my pictures didn't suffer or how I didn't break the damn camera. It was a long night after a full day's of work and I just came back from the canes game. Crashed at a friends place, woke up 7am and shot soccer with PhotogRob the whole day Saturday.

^Thanks You So I have a question, do any of you know of a good site to sell your photos? The one I'm trying right now doesn't get many hits and I've only made a little bit. I'd prefer free at first. Anyone have luck with smugmug (a pay for site?)
11/9/2008 11:48:00 PM
Depends on what you are selling and to whom. For anyone to just go and buy there's a few good ones out there. I've used http://www.photoreflect.com a few times and they work pretty good. A number of other photographers use theirs as well. I've also used http://www.millerslab.com, but they are a pro photo lab and have hosting capabilities. Most hosting sites generally take a percentage of the profits. There's a few checkout utilities you can get if you know how to host a site, but those cost a few bucks.A little advice, if you are just randomly taking pictures with no steps towards marketing efforts, it doesn't matter what site you use to host, you won't grow as a business. I generally don't sell my pics to the masses, but when I do, I just do it old school and send the customer an invoice, setup an FTP and have the users download the pics at their leisure. I rather like to deal with one client that pays me $1000 than 1000 clients paying me $1.

I'm selling my 30D with battery grip for $650. Comes with two batteries. Has some minor cosmetic scratches, but works perfectly. I got this camera refurbished with a new shutter June of 2006, but since I got my 1D in Jan of 2008, I retired this camera as a backup and barely used it since.
11/13/2008 12:40:34 PM
sell the battery grip seperate?

The D40 is 499 and the D60 is 599Ill be using it to shoot sports shots when I go to games, or try to take more photography oriented shots when I go on vacations.I guess Im a sucker for megapixels, but I guess it really doesnt matter. The D40 is more my style from what it looks like. I assume I can get a D40x for the same amount?
11/13/2008 8:43:39 PM
I may be incorrect but someone told me that the d40x is now the d60.
11/13/2008 9:19:19 PM
Well I guess the D40 is a go! Hell its cheaper and faster... cant say much more convincing things than that.Ive always wanted to do photography, but from what I understand there is a fair amount of photoshopping skills involved and I have very little experience with photoshop.I would love to have the talent one day to take some of the quality pictures posted on this page. I think its an easy outlet for a persons self expression.
11/13/2008 9:54:23 PM
yeah, I never really got the D60 product placement with the D40, D40x and D80. But the statement that that you have to use a faster lens and slower shutters speeds is a stupid statement because if you go by the ISO standards, you should be able to produce the exact same exposures with the exact same settings. The D40 or the D60 won't produce blurry pictures, its how you use them and the person behind the camera that will.btw, The flash sync speed of the D40 is crazy awesome. Probably the single best thing about the tiny camera. I've synced it to 1/2500 to flash with no bars! That's just awesome. I just wish more modern camera's could sync that high. Damn you focal plane shutters![Edited on November 13, 2008 at 9:56 PM. Reason : ]

Are the D70/80/90 comparable to the D40 in terms of the listed strengths of the D40?I would assume the cost of the 70/80/90 isnt justifiable...I presume the D40 is simply the best all around camera. So who has one they want to sell me? Its 499 at Best Buy and 449 at Ritz, assuming they include the standard lens.[Edited on November 13, 2008 at 10:00 PM. Reason : .]
11/13/2008 10:00:29 PM
how ever much the body minus the grip would be.
11/13/2008 10:04:12 PM
actually the D40 is on Sale at BB...I'm looking at the D40 + the nikkor 18-200mm lens and the sigma 10-20mm lens right now...I need financing to get me to my first paycheck so it sucks b/c BB and ritz/wolf are an extra $300 over intarnet pricing... but I'm not going to the Grand Canyon without those lenses so I'm gonna suck it up and go for the gold
11/13/2008 10:19:54 PM
I LOVE my d40.
11/13/2008 10:22:26 PM
it's between that and the Faster newer d90... but I figure I'll blow my wad on nice ass lenses and upgrade to a D700 or something (yes I know the 18-200 is a DX) if I actually use my camera and make prints enough
11/13/2008 10:24:02 PM
d90 is hot shit right now too. Good time to buy because there are some killer sales going on
11/13/2008 10:26:26 PM
What kind of lens is best for sports shots from the stands and how much would it run?
11/13/2008 10:27:06 PM
$Alaska
11/13/2008 10:28:17 PM
With or without the government supplement to live there?
11/13/2008 10:30:23 PM
without it would be $californiaand my real answer is: I don't know yet, but I'm sure somebody on here does, essentially you want a very low aperture number and a very long lens, and that is going to cost you a shit-ton.Low aperture means that it collects a lot of light (F/2.8) the long lens is the long focal length which is required for long distance zoom.Collecting more light causes the images to develop quicker ( I can give a device physucks lecture but nobody cares that much)[Edited on November 13, 2008 at 10:33 PM. Reason : real answer]
11/13/2008 10:30:51 PM
I just got my hands on a 100-400 lens for canon (rent from southeast) and I'm totally blown away by it. I also got to play with a friends 28-300 and it works pretty good. I'm just not used to the push pull lens yet.
11/13/2008 10:35:44 PM
Something to take into consideration is shutter speed and fps for continuous mode, something a lot of sports shooters like. The d90 can do close to 5 fps whereas the d40 only does 3 fps. And forget trying to snap quickly with the on camera flash on the d40, if you need flash you better get an external one. Right now the sb-600, a good one for the d40, runs about $230
11/13/2008 10:37:52 PM
as somebody else discussed with JBaz earlier... anticipation of sport action can set you up for great shots without needing an ultra fast response time. That being said... technology exists to take nanosecond response images using digital shutters... unfortunately that technology won't hit the market for probably 10 years
11/13/2008 10:41:27 PM
I'm sure you can get an sb-800 for cheap used off of nikoncafe forum.^ or you could get either a 5D mkII and shoot 30fps in HD or even a Red 5k camera shooting in super HD at 30fps.[Edited on November 13, 2008 at 10:43 PM. Reason : ]
