Do you think he would have been so successful without paying for players?
9/28/2017 2:44:13 PM
do you think he’s the only coach to have paid for players?you also still have to be able to coach the players[Edited on September 28, 2017 at 2:52 PM. Reason : it’s not like he’s always had loaded rosters, either]
9/28/2017 2:46:12 PM
obviously he's still a great coach. but his reputation has been tarnished badly at this point. let's not act like this is the first scandal of his.what could save his legacy and reputation would be if there's some insane fallout with dozens other coaches and schools and the scandal as a whole overshadows him specifically in it.
9/28/2017 3:01:27 PM
I’m not arguing that it isn’t part of his legacy, just that it doesn’t destroy itand I’m pretty confident that this is just the tip of a really big iceberg
9/28/2017 3:10:19 PM
I mean if you still think Lance Armstrong is a hero, I could see why you'd think Patino would get a pass and deserves to be remembered for all the great stuff he did. Otherwise, nah.
9/28/2017 3:25:00 PM
have I ever claimed that Lance Armstrong is still a hero?
9/28/2017 3:32:16 PM
9/28/2017 3:32:56 PM
I think its funny and telling that this whole thing started with a dude involved in the original UNC football scandal.
9/28/2017 3:35:08 PM
My question is when does Calipari's name show up?
9/28/2017 3:35:57 PM
The schools that are better at this stuff know that there were too many people involved here. They have one guy probably that handles all this and that one guy knows if anything were to ever happen he was acting as a lone wolf and no one knew anything. Clearly these other guys got sloppy and it caught up to them as soon as one person snitched.
9/28/2017 3:38:35 PM
^^^^ you really wanna compare pedophila and pay-for-play?[Edited on September 28, 2017 at 3:39 PM. Reason : .]
9/28/2017 3:38:54 PM
Joe Pa wasn't a pedophile, he was a guy that didn't fire his friend for being a pedophile. And no, I'm not comparing the two, I'm comparing who coaches who have damaged reputations because of controversy, of which they are both now a part.
9/28/2017 3:50:31 PM
Roy knew. Dean knew. They both belong on this list we are making.
9/28/2017 3:52:44 PM
not all controversies are created equalone controversy is common in college athleticsthe other is not
9/28/2017 3:52:53 PM
I'm interested in the incidence of FBI investigation in college athletics. I'm not convinced "common" is the appropriate adjective
9/28/2017 4:00:45 PM
do you not think that pay-for-play has been going on for decades and decades?[Edited on September 28, 2017 at 4:09 PM. Reason : .]
9/28/2017 4:09:19 PM
I would imagine that is pretty much pervasive in major college athletics
9/28/2017 4:22:32 PM
9/28/2017 4:51:48 PM
9/28/2017 4:57:18 PM
See his legacy is already tarnished. People are already conflating him with Piterno.
9/28/2017 5:05:32 PM
9/28/2017 5:52:45 PM
Ah, so you don't have an argument then. His name is being dragged through the mud and it will only get worse. Glad we cleared that up.And the Armstrong example makes perfect sense if you get the concept that cheating (even it can occur in a variety of different ways, and some penalty are harsher than others) is still cheating, and most people have a problem with it.
9/28/2017 5:56:52 PM
when was Rick Pitino ever held in the same regard as Lance Armstrong?the original point that was being discussed is Pintino’s legacy being destroyed. it’s not destroyed, and this is now part of said legacyto argue that his legacy is now destroyed is to be under the assumption that he’s the only coach to have ever been a part of what he’s been accused of doing and that he was pure before any of this broke[Edited on September 28, 2017 at 6:10 PM. Reason : .]
9/28/2017 6:05:07 PM
He never was. He's always had a shady past. The fact that you think his legacy is going to survive shows you still don't get it. LOL
9/28/2017 6:07:52 PM
the shadiness is part of his legacy it was before, and it is now
9/28/2017 6:09:28 PM
is a 'legacy' a good thing to you or a bad thing?
9/28/2017 6:14:56 PM
it’s both
9/28/2017 6:15:59 PM
9/28/2017 6:19:33 PM
he’ll forever be known as an all-time great coach who was fired over a pay-to-play scandal the scandal doesn’t outweigh his coaching achievements, therefore doesn’t destroy his legacyall of which is part of his legacy
9/28/2017 6:23:37 PM
9/28/2017 6:31:40 PM
If UJust was banned from Sports Talk...he'd be a good dude.Instead...
9/28/2017 6:32:37 PM
So I know you're a lawyer, but does the "I may have done X illegal thing, but I'm still awesome at doing Y, and I should be remembered more for Y than X!" defense fly in legal court?Pretty sure it doesn't fly in the court of public opinion, but hey, I'm not a lawyer for either.[Edited on September 28, 2017 at 6:41 PM. Reason : .]
9/28/2017 6:41:05 PM
Court of public opinion is pretty fucking fluid.Bob Knight is still a coaching legend and I wouldn't let him teach my son how to tie his shoes.
9/28/2017 7:25:55 PM
state fans arent going to let this legacy thing go because they've practiced it with jimmy v for decades
9/28/2017 7:55:33 PM
^, ^^ excellent points

Louisville are goners. With Carolina, they have a lot of power in the ACC as its oldest blueblood. Louisville are a jonny-come-lately only added to increase geographical footprint.
9/29/2017 6:11:11 PM
....and UNC benefits from this shit by getting a commitment from Nassir Little/player 12. Because of course.
10/4/2017 8:02:55 PM
98% of Adidas' previous deal with Louisville was personally paid to Rick Pitino.

What is the wisdom of playing a college game against an american team in China? Makes no sense to me.I get it when pro leagues do it, or even playing against pro teams abroad but why georgia tech?
11/10/2017 3:03:39 AM
Because many large research institutions have sizable international student bodies. If I'm not mistaken, NC State has quite a large number of Chinese graduate students.
