I don't understand why behe is so excitedwhat are you doing on the internet that requires this kind of speed constantly
4/25/2018 10:00:13 PM
I, for one, am running a Plex server. Need dat speed.

Installing Friday
5/7/2018 9:45:56 AM
They're laying the cable on our street and have marked the yards for digging. How soon after the yards got dug up did you get to sign up for service, Exiled?
5/7/2018 9:57:11 AM
Pretty quickly actually. But I checked the Google Fiber page fairly regularly so I just happened to notice it was available one day. They also had a sign up event in our neighborhood one Saturday a month or so ago.
5/7/2018 3:47:55 PM
I got a strange email notification a few minutes ago. The subject was "Still on the fence about Fiber? Try this plan," and the content of the message made it sound like I had started signing up but abandoned the process. So I loaded up the Google Fiber site and sure enough, I was able to sign up. I don't have an installation scheduled, but I figure that will come soon.
6/19/2018 12:52:51 PM
Tested again this am.
7/29/2018 9:52:31 AM
I still ain't heard shit about an installation.
7/30/2018 5:25:55 AM
I got an email to schedule installation today. I was able to schedule for Tuesday.
9/28/2018 9:53:09 PM
Tell them to start pulling cable on the other side of Gorman.
10/1/2018 2:54:44 PM
Got my service set up today. The box and terminal are wired into the house's telephone wiring. The technician patched from a phone jack and ran CAT 5 around the living room walls.I kept my router and switched it over to wireless access point mode. That way, my wireless devices can connect to the original SSIDs without reconfiguring them, plus they don't count against the Network Box's 16-device limit. The speed is good! I ran a speed test over wireless from my late 2013 MacBook Pro, and it hit 500 Mbps. Just ran another test while watching Hulu: 406 Mbps down, 248 up, ping at 4 ms.For a more representative look at wireless performance, my iPad hit 76 down and 83 up with a ping of 6. That's faster than my Spectrum service was.
10/2/2018 8:22:22 PM
What happens when you have more than 16 wireless devices?
10/6/2018 11:50:15 AM
I don't know, but the FAQ says this:
10/7/2018 9:52:04 AM
The Network box is pretty shitty honestly
10/7/2018 11:11:53 AM
you can replace it with a ubnt edgerouter
10/8/2018 9:07:04 AM
btttHad crews out in my neighborhood in Cary destroying yards and such last week. My yard now has three orange conduits under it. I asked one of the guys who they're working for... it's Google Fiber. There are new utility vaults scattered around now that I need to go inspect. I'm expecting to see GFBR on them. A friend in an adjacent neighborhood found one near him. Hopefully this means it won't be too much longer, but it sounds like I shouldn't get my hopes up.
4/5/2019 4:13:27 PM
still doing pretty good.
4/25/2019 7:25:05 PM
i get 400 down from spectrum
5/19/2019 6:50:03 PM
what's your upload tho? that's where the real benefit is. that and latency.
5/20/2019 9:02:11 AM
Had Spectrum for years, waiting for Google Fiber for years, gave up and got AT&T Fiber last week. (in Charlotte)
5/22/2019 9:18:48 AM
I think I'm finally going to just go ahead and upgrade from 100 to 1000.Any personal suggestions for wireless to replace the box they give you? I don't have a huge amount of space that would need a mesh network or anything. Just because I don't have a need for some fancy schmancy mesh setup doesn't mean I don't want an otherwise overachiever of a wireless router/access point. I see the UBNT edgerouter mention above. I'm familiar with those and may have access to one to replace the google box, but that still leaves needing a wireless replacement.[Edited on May 22, 2019 at 10:16 AM. Reason : ]

If you go with the Ubiquiti router, why not their APs also?
5/22/2019 2:45:20 PM
^^^ colangus: I've had issues with the ATT Fiber Modems and IPV6 DNS. I just turn it off. Perks it way way up for me.^^ The "prosumer" ubiquiti stuff seems to be right at it's limit at 1Gbps. Turning on intrusion detection, WAN failover, SmartQueues or more complex routing/firewall setups crush it. At the moment only the 16-core XG monster is rated to run everything and saturate a 1Gbps pipe. All that to say it works great, just don't enable all the bells/whistles (with DPI & WAN failover on I see about 800/200 and 900/900 naked - no idea why it crushes the upload so bad.)

5/24/2019 9:32:55 AM
NM I found it. But I disabled it and can't tell a difference.
5/24/2019 8:39:27 PM
FYI - ATT is doing a $60/mo. (for 12 mo. $80 after) if you bundle w/ wireless or TV right now.For those that went with ATT, what's the install like? Do you get to choose the room/entry point for the line? I plan on passing through their router to my synology gigabit...but I don't really want to move everything from where I have it on the 2nd floor...
7/25/2019 10:27:34 AM
they will want to put the box near your other utilities, i'm not sure if it's a requirement or a preference. from there you may be limited by how much fiber they have on the truck but in my experience they have been willing to put the inside demarc wherever you want as long as you have a realistic pathway. i went to the complete opposite side of the house and up to the second story from the box and they were fine with that, but said they couldn't just put the box on the other side of the house so it would give them a shorter run because he said it is supposed to be mounted near your other utilities.
7/25/2019 1:35:16 PM
Gotcha...so if I want them to go up the same wall to the 2nd/3rd floor that'd probably be fine.Anyone had issues with bypassing ATT's router and using your own?
7/25/2019 3:34:24 PM
yeahi'm using my own router but i can't remember what i had to do to use it, i think it may be in access point mode?

there's a wan passthrough that you can enable on the AT&T modem and use your own router.

What's it like going from 200-300mbs to a gig? Obvi download speeds increase, but what about day to day stuff like streaming? Notice the the upgrade day to day much?
11/22/2019 9:49:52 AM
i don't have google fiber, i have at&t gigabit, but came from a 300mbps and the only places i really see an improvement are downloading and uploading. uploading is probably the biggest improvement, i don't have to downgrade media to stream them from my plex server and am now only limited by the processor if multiple people are using my server. uploading videos to youtube or other places is a lot faster, i can even stream video to youtube on high settings which had problems before. no differences in streaming netflix or youtube or anything, at least not in my setup where at most i might have 2 or 3 streams (maybe if you have a full house of people streaming there is a difference?). latency is also improved, i don't know enough about it though to know if that is just from going from spectrum to at&t or if having gigabit has anything to do with that.
11/22/2019 10:11:35 AM
^ yeah i signed up for at&t gigabit last night for $70/month (plus a bullshit $10 "equipment charge" for the gateway/router)...moving on from spectrum base 200mbs
11/22/2019 12:01:33 PM
Can’t get fiber here yet...sad days. Miss living so close to the big o city. Especially having fiber options.

Google Fiber just started work again in Carrboro, after several years of nothing. So did that Google wireless gigabit service not pan out?
12/8/2019 11:42:53 AM
Nixing the 100 for $50 in February, instead their baseline will be 500 for $55. Not mad about that.
12/9/2019 9:15:39 AM
yep, I'm glad I didn't switch from 100 to 1000 a week or so ago like I had thought about...the 500 for just $5 more is a helluva deal
1/3/2020 9:22:31 PM
rumors are going around my neighborhood they are currently running google fiber tubes. makes sense because we already have ATT fiber. cant find anything online about it
1/30/2020 9:44:21 AM
Look like you won't be able to get "traditional" TV service via google fiber any more.https://tech.slashdot.org/story/20/02/04/2113224/google-fiber-kills-its-traditional-tv-service-for-new-customers
2/5/2020 10:35:59 AM
What was cost? Youtube TV kicks ass anyways, I don’t find this a big deal
2/5/2020 6:42:00 PM
Trying out Youtube TV now for 2 weeks. So far I'm impressed. My Google Fiber TV service was $105 + $10 for an additional box. The unlimited recordings looks to be a huge plus. No more worrying about filling the DVR. You can record anything you are remotely interested. No surround sound is annoying, but I did not use it too often anyway.
2/9/2020 2:27:59 PM
^can watch on cellular data too. And I don’t know your situation but if you at most will only ever use 2 streams and know someone that would at most use 1 stream, you can split it. 27ish a month after tax
2/9/2020 7:03:04 PM
I've considered it. I likely will only use 2 at a time. A few things I've found annoying so far is you can't turn off watch next and I wish they had a recycle bin etc. so I could remove 'recorded' items and keep the clutter down. I also miss the google fiber remote. My Sony remote is awful. I may have to upgrade to a Harmony.
