Lol yes I consider a one point win over Georgia southern at home comparable to beating one of the best college basketball teams ever. Yep you got me. What an idiot.

Doeren could be on the road to greatness!
8/30/2014 4:05:24 PM
I mean...it was a pretty shitty win...but we look a 100 times better on offense than we did last year. Jacoby can actually throw the ball and has some accuracy.Defense is definitely a concern. We have some great individual efforts (Hakim Jones, linebackers were solid, DL had their moments) but way too many lapses.
8/30/2014 4:06:01 PM
8/30/2014 4:08:38 PM
Our defense should improve once the coaches watch the tape and realize that we'd be better off playing with 10 than with #8 in coverage
8/30/2014 4:16:42 PM
I'll take the W. Brissett looked like he settled into the role in the second half and looked much better. Had he been as efficient in the first half and connected on some of his wide-open down the field throws, we'd have been in a much better spot at halftime.OL looked good, RB/WR/TE all looked good, but Brissett makes the offense go. If he can build off this and start the next game like he ended this game, could see us putting up decent numbers on offense. Our D just had a bad match-up. Running a 4-2-5 against the triple-option is just a bad match-up but we did an OK time adjusting since we expected them to be running the pistol/spread and they came out running much more triple-option than expected.
8/30/2014 4:18:43 PM
I'm with doss2k, the fact that we had to come back from 17-3 at the half to win against this team, 1 point or 20 is sad. If you think we can play like that and win against an ACC team, excluding wake forest, you are delusional. We have a long way to go, and this easy 4 game start isn't going to help us get much better. Definitely not to the place we need to be to become competitive again.
8/30/2014 4:20:30 PM
^I don't think anybody is accepting this as a great win. But, we can take a few positives away. Brissett seemed to settle in in the 2nd half. And I'd say GSU is better than La Tech, Richmond, Central Michigan...all OOC teams we played (and beat) last year). This team has a long ways to go. Not sure anybody out there is bullshitting and acting like that's not the case. We just ended an 8 game skid. Nobody thinks we're suddenly world beaters.
8/30/2014 4:23:10 PM
That was a hell of a lot more promising than any of the shit we put on the field last year. Defense had a couple lapses but for the most part adjusted and got stronger as the game went on. Offensively we figured out how to move the chains and get in the end zone. This team could have rolled over and tapped out (which would have happened last year), but they pulled it together for a win. Progress is a good thing. We should feel good about this.[Edited on August 30, 2014 at 4:39 PM. Reason : Feel]
8/30/2014 4:26:20 PM
I can admit that we at least looked better in the second half although their defense was having some serious cramping issues which helped. I'd like to see more of the fast tempo offense if brissett can handle running it that seemed to work out ok. Guess ill see how they use this going into the ODU game to see if its actually progress or not. Lets not forget we didn't look terrible in our first game last year and we see how that worked out.
8/30/2014 4:41:00 PM
I'm not too worried about giving up 23 points to them. We're not going to face many hybrid spread option offenses this year. Teams like Georgia Tech (who have more talent than Georgia Southern) always have a couple games where they drop 50 points on good teams just because their offense has so many wrinkles. I was more disappointed in our offense early on. But Our QB, who hadn't played in a game in years, looked like he shook off the rust in the 2nd half.]
8/30/2014 4:43:53 PM
Do we play Georgia Tech this year?? I fucking hate option teams.
8/30/2014 4:44:14 PM
Yep. 11/8 at our place.

Coverage was pretty bad. I napped through the game and would wake up to see our guys gettin beat. But there were some good balls out there too.Regardless, we won!!!!

Thought our secondary looked pretty bad considering they played an option team. Brissett looked unimpressive until the 4th quarter, hopefully he was just shaking off the rust. Glad to see Byrd make the hit at the end to seal the win after all he has been through.
8/30/2014 10:56:00 PM
Definitely some headaches with the secondary, but there was a lot to feel good about this game. I don't care if it was GA Southern. Brissett, Thornton, Hines, and some of the other offensive guys looked really good ... McGill, Norman, Noel, and Jones looked great on defense.Back to the secondary -- we switched to a 4-2-5 to combat all the spread offenses in the ACC, and we then we start out with a triple option team. Probably the worst possible matchup for our defense, but it's still not an excuse. Some of the DB's were taking terrible angles and getting fooled on the misdirection. Gotta clean that up quick.
8/30/2014 11:15:39 PM
Similar to everyone else, I did observe drastic improvements in the 2nd half...However, I'm going to have to see another game or 2 to get a firm grip on who this team is.The improvement in the 2nd half could have been due to better conditioning on our part, plus adjustments to their defensive scheme. Brissett looked better in the 2nd half, but he has to do that the whole game, not just in the 2nd half... I'm not sold on him yet since most of this 2nd half passes were short, fast tempo throws. He struggled with the deep balls. Also, our defense was giving up some huge plays, pass and rush. They were very close to giving up some big plays in the 4th quarter, but got lucky....I don't know a whole lot about ODU other than they run a traditional offense...
8/31/2014 11:43:55 AM
GSU was having cramping and conditioning issues in the 2nd half
8/31/2014 11:48:45 AM
Brissett ran the no-huddle way better than either Thomas or Mitchell did last year. Both of those guys routinely took a good 15+ seconds to figure out what play they were supposed to be running, giving the defense time to make substitutions and get set. Jacoby had the rest of the offense ready to run the next play almost as soon as the ball was spotted.

lol at #19 in the video with his helmet still on
8/31/2014 1:30:03 PM
every time i've seen them do that celebration, i can't help but laugh at how they are yelling "as the creeper that girdles the tree trunk"
8/31/2014 1:32:30 PM
2nd half gave me a bit of hope going forward, but they need to come out with a good 1st half against ODU. We have a schedule that should allow us to get a bowl game with average play for the entire season, but that first half was really disappointing all around - can't play like that again and hope for a 4th quarter comeback.
8/31/2014 2:59:49 PM
I thought the main reason we switched to 4-2-5 was we are more deficient at linebacker than defensive back...In theory it is better equipped to match up with spread offenses though.
8/31/2014 4:20:08 PM
We're thin at LB, but it's not the main reason we went to it. From a DD teleconference
8/31/2014 4:36:44 PM
In theory we should be able to play multiple formations so our "base" defense shouldn't be that big a deal.
8/31/2014 4:49:45 PM

rewatched the game this morning and just realized that every reception was made by a freshman or sophomore with the exception of one 10 yard catch by purvis. grinnage is the only one of those that's redshirted, too.

^Yeah...personally I don't give a shit about alternate uniforms and stuff. But clearly it appeals to players and recruits. So I'm all for it if it's gonna help us there.

A week from now I expect a to see an article about how Old Dominion piled up 1500 yards of total offense on Eastern Michigan to remove my doubts about the state of our program.
9/9/2014 11:10:01 AM
That would remove your doubts? It wouldn't remove my doubts.

apparently it happened in the library in front of people, right? and really wasn't analogous to the ray rice incident, right? not that i'm defening it, but saying it was like ray rice is super hyperbole and innacurate, right?
9/9/2014 11:56:12 AM
The details would have to be pretty tame to justify keeping him on the team, in my opinion. I don't know what he (Shad) did, but it was the second instance of it, correct?
9/9/2014 12:10:19 PM
if i remember right, they were arguing and he pushed her away and into a wall and was charged with misdemeanor battery. i think the library witnesses said it was fairly tame (or as tame as pushing someone into a wall could be). then he was investigated again for sexual battery but was never charged, but was charged with marijuana possession when they came to his apartment to investigate. Or something like that, i don't know if i'm remembering right. Not defending, just saying comparing the library incident to ray rice is inaccurate.

9/9/2014 12:24:27 PM
nah, it means something. it means they don't totally suck. it doesn't mean we don't suck though.
9/9/2014 12:25:17 PM
9/9/2014 12:29:24 PM
anytime you lay a hand on someone it can lead to misdemeanor battery charges, especially if it's "domestic". even pushing someone. which is a lot tamer than what ray rice did, dontcha think?[Edited on September 9, 2014 at 12:36 PM. Reason : again, not defending, just saying it wasn't ray rice]
