The director of the national parks service disproved that talking point already

he also reminded everyone that there is a first amendment exception to the closures, so the tea party should spend their faux outrage on more important things that are not funded

Because of the endless amount of money they are wasting by putting security and blockades around national monuments that are open air, most of which never have any security around them on a normal day.

if all of these things that are federally funded are not getting the funds....why aren't my taxes lower?

I'll be doing my part to make sure none of these self centered idiots that lack any idea of common sense to make a return trip to Washington.

what is the point in furloughing people if you are going to pay them for the time they missed?

Now I am rushing to find trails that are not in the park, and the state road that cuts through the park from Cherokee NC may be closed (add at least an hour to the drive now)."

Perhaps a naive viewpoint, but couldn't you just bypass the gates and enter the trails somewhere else? How is the fed gov't shutting down nature?

I would put all of my energy into getting on those trails no matter what.

If anything puts your trip in the shitter its going to be Pigeon Forge / Gaitlinburg. Except for Dollywood (which is tolerable) no two cities in the US suck more dick.

That's why this is all kind of a joke. They're essentially on paid vacation at this point, which means this shutdown will literally cost money, and I don't mean that in the silly liberal "tax cuts cost money" way.

since when is the shutdown about saving money? the shutdown is because there is no budget.

Regardless of political party, opinion of Obamacare, or who you blame for the shutdown...a government that intentionally makes life harder for its citizens is no longer of, by, or for the people. That is a fact.

the number of republican congressfolk jumping on board the "we won't default, we can just prioritize our debt payments" bandwagon is really starting to get scary.

Which explains #9 perfectly. I definitely agree with #11 and #12.

It begins, with a couple firms ditching short-term Treasuries in anticipation of a default (I heard on the BBC World Service that another American firm did this too, blacking out a longer range of due dates, but I haven't found a link): http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-fidelity-bonds-20131009,0,3822933.story

BTW,

I for one think dtownral is silly for thinking that tax cuts don't cost money when taxes are already well below the region of counterproductivity; also even without the back-pay the shutdown would cost money, like the transition costs aren't mere trifles.

Another day and more Republican ineptitude.

these guys are not responsible enough to lead our nation. Even if you agree with Republican ideology, its clear that Republicans can not be trusted to run the nation. Time and time again, Republicans have led us to the edge and Democrats have been the adults in the room.
