I think Pickles is better than DA now that Chud is gone. Chud was the only person who ever got anything decent out of DA.

Is preseason still meaningless? Does this game signify great things ahead for the defense? If it means great things for the d what does it say for the shithole offensive performance?

That was the preseason game where both teams actually gameplan for each other and go out trying to make it a "dress rehearsal" for the regular season.

I think it signifies great things for that front seven especially. Star and KK were both in there making plays against a really good o-line and Kuechly, well, he's primed for an outstanding year. You can get away with being average in the secondary if the pass rush is getting there like last night.

Gettleman has to be ready to pounce during cut downs next week for o-line help. This has to be Gross' last year and Bell was overmatched all night. Cam's gonna end up hurt if something isn't done immediately on that front.

^Gawd, the RB doesn't even have the ball and Kuechly is already sprinting past the O-line and into the backfield

Everyone is right to be concerned about the O-line, cause they looked pretty horrible, but I still think there are some dimensions to our offense that we didn't show last night (nearly all of our runs were between the tackles, No passes into the flats, etc) that could relieve some of the pressure on the O-line and Cam.

We're trying to run an extremely vanilla offense, ala Manning's Colts, but we don't have the o-line or receivers to do that. It's also a complete waste of Newtons skill set. We should be rolling him out more, like the 'hawks do with Wilson. I appreciate the idea of trying to keep him in the pocket to prolong his career, but with our shit line its just turning him into a sitting duck.

I would think that the playbook isn't that different from what we had last year. I remember Cam saying they simplified the play calls, but no one ever mentioned changing the offense. I would expect they open it up a lot more in the regular season with some added dimensions to the offense like play action and read option stuff.

I'm not making excuses, but Cam always looks like shit in the preseason. He's one of those guys that can't do it unless he knows it has meaning. He flips the switch on gameday.

Would have been great if he had just lowered the boom on Flacco instead of trying to cut back up field.

Both Pilares and Bruce Campbell were "waived/injured" earlier today, whatever that means...I dunno if it means they were cut, or put on IR

Thank God. I wonder what the holdup was? Seemed like they could have signed him weeks ago and let him practice with the team some

(unless wharton just really didn't want to go to training camp ... hard to blame him)

There was apparently a contract negotiation dispute, ie they couldn't come to an agreement on the money

Signed a one year deal though...I'd take him over Bell or Williams...lets hope Kugbila can play...that should help a lot

But its still important for people like face to remember that the defense gets going earlier than the offensive line for every team, and the O-line has to gel...hopefully they can click pretty well by week 2 or 3...though it sucks we're going to have to go against Seattle's defense in week 1...though I fear their secondary more than their front 7

The initial hold up weeks ago was that Wharton wanted two years and Gettlemen wouldn't budge on a one year deal. Now, he signed a one year deal, but for a little more money than he would have gotten a few weeks ago.

They're going to put him in at guard according to Person.

Was surprised to see some guys playing so late in the game yesterday. I expect Josh Norman to be back in the starting line-up this season and he was still out there in the 4th quarter against Pitt.

Crazy the # of takeaways the Panthers managed to accrue in the preseason. Now watch us go on a drought once the season starts. Norman had 4 INTs alone.

Norman has improved, but I'm seriously doubting he starts. I think he's battling the other Josh for nickel back. I think it'd be wise to move Captain into the nickle slot on 3rd downs and leave Norman out on the edge, but we'll see. Drayton Florence seems to have the other CB spot locked up.

And yes, Ginn is fast as shit. If his hands have improved, he's easily our #3 WR. Just sending him deep every play would be fine with me. The safety has to respect his speed, which opens things up for everyone else.

^ I thought LaFell was a the clear #2, but I am not a huge Panther follower.

Cam and Smith are probably laughing about the fact that Manziel got half a game suspension and Cam did not get squat.

^^ I mean, LaFell might be listed as the #2 but he's hardly done much to lock that position down.

He's done just enough to not lose the #2 spot

I was thinking earlier, maybe one week Ginn will have a great week of practice and get more reps during that week's game...maybe the next week Hixon or Gettis will step up and get more touches...Smitty, Olsen, 3rd/4th option by committee

So much for Drayton Florence taking that #2 starting CB spot:
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/08/31/panthers-cut-drayton-florence/

Maybe they were impressed with Josh Norman's play in the preseason, haha.

tl;dr:

- Clausen, Gettis and DJ Campbell waived/injured...sucks cause Gettis looked good in preseason
- shitstains like UNC Zach Pianalto and Tennessee Tauren Poole were cut as well

I'd like to see some more depth at linebacker since we seem to have a major injury every yr on that front and thomas davis is the only player ever with 3 torn acls, shame we had to let anderson go

We drafted Klein, brought in Blackburn in free agency and still have Jordan Senn

6 linebackers seems like enough for a 4-3 defense
