is an AK-47 an assault rifle?
7/24/2012 9:08:27 PM
depends on your definition
7/24/2012 9:10:07 PM
I just wanted to know if this guy's chopper was an assault rifle: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/07/24/maine-police-batman-copycat-suspect-planned-to-shoot-employer/I didn't want to label it incorrectly.

there used to be a couple of good quizzes that showed pictures of various military-style rifles, and you were to identify which ones were banned under the '94 AWB...it helped show the futility of such a stupid piece of legislation. I can't find them anymore, though.

the article reports that a fully automatic weapon, which was obtained illegally, was found in his home. most folks would define that as an assault rifle.the folks who wrote that article or possibly the law enforcement agents who reported what was found in the home also apparently do not know the difference between a bipod and a tripod
7/24/2012 9:22:10 PM
Between y0willy0 and NeuseRvrRat, I'm more confused than ever...
7/24/2012 9:23:48 PM
the article doesnt state that the fully automatic weapon and the AK he had were one and the same gun.sorry emce, ill try to be more clear.the typical AK that a person can buy legally is just a rifle that resembles and true AK, but really its just a rifle....until you add a magazine with more than 10 rounds (or 5 rounds if you live in CA, i believe).even then its still not an assault rifle, its just an illegal (non 922r compliant rifle), unless it has enough american made parts to be compliant.and even if it is compliant then its still not an assault rifle because its only semi auto. they are incorrectly referred to as assault rifles because they resemble an AK-47 (which is an assault rifle).really your average redneck bragging about his AK-47 doesnt truly have an AK-47. if he calls what he has an assault rifle then hes an idiot. they are replicas and nothing more-[Edited on July 24, 2012 at 9:30 PM. it can be very difficult for folks with little general firearms knowledge to understand these differences. that's why i posted the video on the last page. it's old and geared towards addressing the old AWB, but it's still accurate.
7/24/2012 9:26:22 PM
I think I have a better grasp on all of this now. At least the assault weapon was in this guy's closet, and he was only planning on murdering someone with the non-assault weapon.[Edited on July 24, 2012 at 9:30 PM. Reason : btw, I'm just kidding with you guys. I don't really care about assault weapons.]
7/24/2012 9:30:05 PM
the AWB only punished collectors and hobbyists.hobbyists not to be confused with sportsmen-NOTA to be confused with criminals.

thank you for taking the time to enlighten me

"AKs" -nigger
7/24/2012 10:06:54 PM
When I say: I went out and shot my AK-47 last weekend. What I'm actually saying is: I went out and shot my WASR 10/63 AK Variant in 7.62x39.See why we just say AK?The first would be an assault weapon. The second is a 'sporting rifle'.[Edited on July 24, 2012 at 10:10 PM. Reason : .]

Dude, you responded to me first with the statement about revolvers in relation to my numbers on guns used in self defense. I responded to your response and then you say you weren't arguing my points. You've got me confused as shit but whatever.
7/24/2012 11:38:42 PM
Looking back, you are right, I started it. I was using your post to argue a point that was only tangentially related.
7/24/2012 11:42:06 PM
Question about the AWB. If it were reinstated, is it just to prevent future purchases? Would current owners still be allowed to keep their guns or would they be repossessed. And how would one prove their gun was purchased pre-AWB vs. post-AWB.[Edited on July 25, 2012 at 12:24 AM. Reason : thanks]

you can tell this guy didn't know shit about guns nor did he have one very longbeing that his ar jammed its probably not even broken in yet. and anyone that knows shit would know the huge mags jam way more than a normal mag.good thing cause 100 rounds of .223 would have left an ugly mess.
7/25/2012 1:42:56 AM
reminds me of the largest bank shootout in LA and the guy's AK jamming which caused him to get killed......sometimes divine intervention is great !!

^ This is why a gun ban not a loose law is needed. The assault weapons ban did nothing but make assault rifles expensive.
7/25/2012 8:29:34 AM
^^there we go - I remember buying 'pre-ban' high-capacity magazines at gun shows during that time period.[Edited on July 25, 2012 at 8:30 AM. Reason : -]

^ lol, no. And this is coming from someone who has a pistLOL grip shotgun. Proper AR HD ammo is pretty good about avoiding over penetration.
7/25/2012 8:48:06 AM
sweet, still going.Don't turn this thread into a HD firearm pissing contest. Everyone has their "this is best". FWIW, shotguns are better for HD. [Edited on July 25, 2012 at 8:52 AM. Reason : .]

I knew someone would take exception to the pistol grip! use full stock or collapsible stock.I like the pistol grip because its easier to maneuver in indoors/small places. I'm talking home defense, not a long protracted battle.
7/25/2012 8:54:01 AM
I prefer butt + pistol combo stock.anywho... back to the show
7/25/2012 8:59:23 AM
I have one so I am not hating too much, I can hit whatever I need in my house with one but I could be just as accurate, if not more, with my AR and saying it would over penetrate is foolishness.
7/25/2012 9:00:05 AM
imo, for home defense, the AR15 seems excessive....even the shotgun could be hard to maneuver through hallways/doors with it's length and sizepersonally, i'd keep the G19 with 30 round extension handy.....if i really needed shotgun firepower, then the saiga-12

So your arsenal of guns is gonna save you if I'm in your bedroom while you're sleep?I bet I can slit your throat before you think about your guns.
7/25/2012 9:49:10 AM
That's a possibility. It's also a possibility that I was awakened by you kicking down a door. Or bust through a window. Or when the alarm went off. Or maybe I'm not asleep. All types of possibilities. No one is saying that having a firearm will always save you.
7/25/2012 9:51:04 AM
you'd have to get past my alarm system first - aka, my 3 rottweilers
