I just wanted to know if this guy's chopper was an assault rifle: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/07/24/maine-police-batman-copycat-suspect-planned-to-shoot-employer/

I didn't want to label it incorrectly.

"Courtois told state police he was driving to Derry, N.H., to shoot a former employer. Police found four handguns, several boxes of ammunition, and an AK-47 assault rifle inside the car, an arsenal allegedly similar to the one Aurora shooting suspect James Eagan Holmes had at the time of the massacre last Friday that left 12 people dead and 58 others wounded. "

except holmes had an AR, a remington pump shotgun, and an unknown 9mm handgun.

at least last time i checked.

oh yeah, sounds similar to me.

^if this dudes AK was semi auto then no, its not an assault rifle. if it had an extended magazine and not the required number of US manufactured parts, then it was not 922r compliant and illegal anyway (still wouldnt be an assault rifle, just a rifle in non-sporting configuration).

i doubt that bumfuck legally had an ASSAULT RIFLE, as you say, in the AK configuration as he doesnt appear to be the type to drop $20k on a gun (or anything for that matter).

the term assault rifle is thrown around in a laughably irresponsible (and ill informed manner).

there used to be a couple of good quizzes that showed pictures of various military-style rifles, and you were to identify which ones were banned under the '94 AWB...it helped show the futility of such a stupid piece of legislation.

I can't find them anymore, though.

Quote :
"not the required number of US manufactured parts"

922r is another staggeringly stupid law. Hell that one is even dumber and 10,000x more useless than the AWB, although less of a pain in the ass.

Taking this at face value, the AK47 variant that they found in that man's possession was semi-auto only, and thus not an assault rifle

the article reports that a fully automatic weapon, which was obtained illegally, was found in his home. most folks would define that as an assault rifle.

the folks who wrote that article or possibly the law enforcement agents who reported what was found in the home also apparently do not know the difference between a bipod and a tripod

the article doesnt state that the fully automatic weapon and the AK he had were one and the same gun.

sorry emce, ill try to be more clear.

the typical AK that a person can buy legally is just a rifle that resembles and true AK, but really its just a rifle.

...until you add a magazine with more than 10 rounds (or 5 rounds if you live in CA, i believe).

even then its still not an assault rifle, its just an illegal (non 922r compliant rifle), unless it has enough american made parts to be compliant.

and even if it is compliant then its still not an assault rifle because its only semi auto. they are incorrectly referred to as assault rifles because they resemble an AK-47 (which is an assault rifle).

really your average redneck bragging about his AK-47 doesnt truly have an AK-47. if he calls what he has an assault rifle then hes an idiot. they are replicas and nothing more-

it can be very difficult for folks with little general firearms knowledge to understand these differences. that's why i posted the video on the last page. it's old and geared towards addressing the old AWB, but it's still accurate.

I think I have a better grasp on all of this now. At least the assault weapon was in this guy's closet, and he was only planning on murdering someone with the non-assault weapon.

the AWB only punished collectors and hobbyists.

hobbyists not to be confused with sportsmen-

NOTA to be confused with criminals.

When I say:
I went out and shot my AK-47 last weekend.

What I'm actually saying is:
I went out and shot my WASR 10/63 AK Variant in 7.62x39.

See why we just say AK?

The first would be an assault weapon. The second is a 'sporting rifle'.

my point was you werent addressing/claiming the points i was arguing against and i dont feel like searching in the thread to find where whoever claimed whatever.

my dismissal was more saying, you were making fair points so i wont argue, i was trying to argue about the ridiculous points from a few pages back. it was mean to be a respectful dismissal.

Question about the AWB. If it were reinstated, is it just to prevent future purchases? Would current owners still be allowed to keep their guns or would they be repossessed. And how would one prove their gun was purchased pre-AWB vs. post-AWB.

And this is where you begin going wrong. Hunting, recreational shooting, self-defense are all constructive purposes. Just because you don't like the doesn't mean shit.

you can tell this guy didn't know shit about guns nor did he have one very long

being that his ar jammed its probably not even broken in yet.

and anyone that knows shit would know the huge mags jam way more than a normal mag.

good thing cause 100 rounds of .223 would have left an ugly mess.

i can't see the future, so i have no idea. here's what happened under the old law:

Quote :
"Possession of illegally imported or manufactured firearms was outlawed as well, but the law did not ban the possession or sale of pre-existing "assault weapons" or previously factory standard magazines which had been legally redefined as "large capacity ammunition feeding devices". This provision for "pre-ban" firearms created a higher price point in the market for such items, which still exist due to several states adoption of their own assault weapons ban."

^ This is why a gun ban not a loose law is needed. The assault weapons ban did nothing but make assault rifles expensive.

Go with option 3, an 18" barrel, pistol grip shotgun. The ultimate point and shoot weapon and it wont go through your house and your neighbor's house. You can load it with different types of shot to meet your needs.
Pistol = personal defense
Shotgun = inside the home defense
AR-15= outside the home defense and everything else

And this is coming from someone who has a pistLOL grip shotgun. Proper AR HD ammo is pretty good about avoiding over penetration.

FWIW, shotguns are better for HD.

I knew someone would take exception to the pistol grip! use full stock or collapsible stock.
I like the pistol grip because its easier to maneuver in indoors/small places.
I'm talking home defense, not a long protracted battle.

I have one so I am not hating too much, I can hit whatever I need in my house with one but I could be just as accurate, if not more, with my AR and saying it would over penetrate is foolishness.

imo, for home defense, the AR15 seems excessive....even the shotgun could be hard to maneuver through hallways/doors with it's length and size

personally, i'd keep the G19 with 30 round extension handy.....if i really needed shotgun firepower, then the saiga-12

it's not like the 30 round is that much longer in size than the standard 15 and it doesn't shoot any differently, so why not....i'd rather be safe than dead esp if there's more than one intruder

I'm assuming he doesn't like the idea of being overmatched - and thinks it should be a fair fight between homeowner and invader.

I on the other hand prefer to display an overwhelming show of force, to not only dissuade a potential invader from any further aggression, but to tip the scale in my favor dramatically

That's a possibility. It's also a possibility that I was awakened by you kicking down a door. Or bust through a window. Or when the alarm went off. Or maybe I'm not asleep. All types of possibilities. No one is saying that having a firearm will always save you.
