Yeah, considering the number of things that require ID I have not problem logically or ideologically requiring a government issued ID in order to vote. Legally speaking it's probably a slightly more difficult sell, but if it's free and readily available it's hard to say that it somehow limits people's franchise.

The problem is the current bill proposed would not nearly adequately fund anything close to free and readily available. The number of North Carolinians who are registered voters and who don't have a license numbers in the hundreds of thousands, and are disproportionately people of color and low income voters. It'd also be a kind of ratty thing to change the rules of the game in the middle of the game, as in changing the voting laws between a primary and general election. If they're going to push such a law, it should be well in advance of an election season, be very well funded to make sure IDs are free and readily available, and be accepting of a lot more types of IDs. We've seen a lot states that were taken over the in 2010 GOP sweep issue laws saying you can't use a college student ID to vote, but you can use a gun license.[Edited on May 20, 2012 at 2:47 PM. if that's true, you're looking at more than 1 out of 10 registered voters who don't have a state issued ID.I'm in favor of the ID thing. although I would modify it to allow other types of photo ID than one issued by DMV.

That is absolutely shocking to me. How in the world do that many people not have a drivers license or ID? That is legitimately shocking to me.

Though too late, I'm pretty sure I convinced my mother (a staunch conservative) to be against this amendment. My dad just got pissed and was like, "you've got to have a definition of marriage and that definition has to be a man and a woman. What's next, a man marrying a goat?" Then I said, "Is a goat an adult who can legally consent to a contract?" Then he stormed out and went to bed. Pretty sure I got to him, but he won't change his mind.

Wasn't sure if this picture had made its way into this thread yet. It's a precinct by precinct breakdown, so it's a little more informative than a county by county breakdown. It still doesn't reflect the high population density in those precincts that voted against which contain a lot of the state's population. In fact, more population density means a smaller precinct I believe to keep them somewhat equal in population size.Wake County had more against voters than any other county in the state. Good job Raleigh.[Edited on May 26, 2012 at 10:49 PM. Reason : .]
