Lol @ the twitter dude obsessed with Devo. Wow.
8/13/2012 2:23:31 PM
I didn't go to the thing at Kings, but if you're talking about who I think, that guy runs the Devo fan club. The Devo RSD record this year came from a tape in his collection.
8/13/2012 6:06:42 PM
I would fully expect that.
8/13/2012 9:36:44 PM
^^Not saying I care, and I know there's a handful of fanatics of musicians that OCD to the point of having something recorded that few, not even the band, have the luxury of (see: that entire Blue Goose/Yazoo records group or maybe a small number of Dead/Phish fans etc), but:
8/16/2012 10:39:28 AM
What do you guys use (if anything) to clean your records?
8/16/2012 10:53:49 AM
A VPI machine.
8/16/2012 11:03:44 AM
shut up, dickhead
8/17/2012 3:35:11 PM
Why don't you love me anymore?
8/17/2012 5:12:52 PM
Got an Introducing the Beatles version 1 today in the best condition I have ever seen with either the cover or record. I only wish it was a stereo. But tomorrow is a new day. also, a 45 of Bang a Gong. It rules.
8/18/2012 8:57:34 PM
vinylbandit - ever had the issue where you've sold things to whoever, then completely regretted it? Sold this Julie London album and am listening to it now completely and...crying for many reasons, including the fact that it ships out Monday.
8/18/2012 10:25:32 PM
Added some new things to my Discogs page if anybody wants to take a gander. Nothing major, but there's a decent, cheap copy of the Wall in there. I know some stores around here charge upwards of 30-40 dollars for that album. Laff. You can get the fucking reissue for that. [Edited on August 21, 2012 at 11:15 PM. Reason : k]
8/21/2012 11:15:08 PM
Jeeze that was fast. Sold.
8/22/2012 12:06:23 AM
To answer the previous question, the only records I've ever sold are things I bought around '98-'01 that I have no interest in listening to or things I bought on a whim and didn't like. Never a regret.
8/22/2012 1:15:28 AM
I'll see the album again. Wasn't a huge deal, but it was a flawless original pressing of a Julie London album. Nothing overly special but still wanted to keep it in retrospect.
8/22/2012 10:17:14 AM
I can only think of the crisp 5 dollar bill that lady would have gotten from any record store for that Beatles album I mentioned above, and that keeps me motivated to cut the stock of every dishonest predatory record store in the area. Nice Price is usually good though, so shop there. They have a modest amount of things on eBay but I think only to stay afloat. So shop and sell there. I want to bring in some of my most valuable albums to some if these others just so I can laugh at the offer.
8/22/2012 10:44:51 AM
yea i'm a big fan of nice price... i'm in there once a week usually. probably seen some of you people
8/22/2012 11:28:14 AM
There's some grey area there when you eBay a u2 album for 200 bucks that you've paid 2 in store credit for, but maybe I'm wrong about the really valuable things. Probably not though.
8/22/2012 2:10:57 PM
Way off base. If we know something is valuable, we pay accordingly.
8/22/2012 5:25:26 PM
Anyone have vinyl pressed before and have a resonable place to have it done?
8/22/2012 5:41:17 PM
^^Well, I would hope so, and that would be another great reason to shop there, but it's already got all my endorsement anyway because of what they don't eBay.
8/22/2012 7:38:01 PM
i hate it when stores put anything on ebay, especially when they now have the option of putting records on discogs and at least giving customers a chance to buy them in person. i've wanted so many records that nice price has put on ebay in the past... records i gladly would have paid the final ebay price for in person. all day has its shit right.
8/23/2012 12:10:07 AM
I think its the issue of being a record store in 2012.they need to move alot of inventory which sometimes is to the detriment of people who actually shop at the physical store.
8/23/2012 8:05:36 AM
There's a sealed album that was bought at one of the record stores around here for 5 dollars and that really bothers me because the record is easily worth 300. That's basically stealing. I've never sold anything valuable to a record store, but if I did I would expect a negotiation similar to a pawn shop. Again, there's a lot of gray area; I've certainly found some gems at the thrift shops before. But I really think there's a difference in someone donating to charity versus expecting fair payment from a store that specializes in the things you're selling. There is no defense for giving someone 5 dollars for the album in question and I have chosen not to do business with con artists after that. As for the eBay thing, I guess I could point out the obvious and say that if you would pay the final prices then pay them. They've told me I could do that and pick things up at the store, but I understand your frustration. I think the Durham store does a fair assessment of things and I've definitely scored some good deals there on albums that they sometimes eBay.
8/23/2012 2:18:19 PM
And yes, All Day is probably the most well-rounded store in the area.
8/23/2012 3:02:30 PM
I think it's dumb to call record stores that underpay for records predatory. for the most part, I would always offer more than usual if I knew a record was worth something, but it's still not going to be even close to what it might sell for online. how else is the store gonna make money?listing things on ebay/discogs can be a pain in the ass, especially having to deal with the people that buy it, boxing and shipping the records (even worse if sold overseas), paypal. if someone doesn't feel like doing that, then that's fine. but they shouldn't be surprised if a record store isn't gonna pay top dollar for it.
8/23/2012 3:18:12 PM
5 dollars. For a 300 record. Is predatory when you know that record is highly desirable and collectible. I'm not talking about paying 5 for something you can maybe squeeze 20 out of. 300 dollars, man. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I did that shit...
8/23/2012 4:00:48 PM
I don't think I ever paid anyone $5 for an album that was sold for $300... but I think you can argue that even if someone (the Internet) thinks an album is worth $300, doesn't mean it will actually sell for that much... record stores are taking risks by buying records. sometimes they get lucky. one time I paid a guy $500 for a box of first pressings of every Sonic Youth related release (and tons of other good shit). he got a good deal. we probably ended up making about $1,000 profit off of it, but it took a few months to get there.
8/23/2012 4:04:19 PM
The album in question was something anybody should know is valuable but the only thing I'm discounting is the seller's assumed stupidity. There's definitely albums you're gambling on but this one was hands down a no-brainer worth hundreds. the sonic youth thing definitely seems fair, and that's good business. Different ballpark on what I'm talking about.
8/23/2012 5:14:29 PM
If youre not going to tell us the album then why are you still blabbing?
8/23/2012 6:51:18 PM
If anybody wants to start a co-op, I'm willing to discuss it. Dead serious.
8/23/2012 7:06:48 PM
i didn't feel bad or predatory when i bought all those Beatles 45's from some chick off craigslist for about a quarter a piece.i think i paid all of $5 for 25 singles. she had the internet, she should've looked it up.
8/23/2012 7:21:46 PM
Those...probably aren't worth what you may think is all I'm sayin'...
8/23/2012 10:54:27 PM
obviously, i don't think i would ever get what goldmine states, but for 25 cents a piece.... i made out really damn well.
8/23/2012 11:17:33 PM
I gave all mine away; most had original sleeves. I think i had nearly all of them, including some on Swan and the like before the Capitol ones. It depends on what condition they're in. To me personally unless they were unplayed or otherwise mint, they aren't worth shit...
8/24/2012 10:04:04 AM
Owner of Nice Price just hooked me up completely. Super nice dude. THAT is also why I shop there.
8/24/2012 12:56:57 PM
why would you not give them away to a perfectly fine friend like me, asshole?
8/24/2012 11:08:48 PM
Because you don't give me lovin'. Just found some Vee Jay singles today in a stack.
8/25/2012 4:12:22 PM
Adding essentially all my LPs from today's find to discogs. Got a few good ray Charles and the likes; original Atlantic presses. Dirt cheap. Check my page soon.
8/25/2012 6:39:33 PM
Picked up a magenta 1st pressing of Chromatics 'Kill For Love' double LP yesterday!!!
8/28/2012 11:14:45 AM
If anybody is interested in anything from my store, everything is $2 for local sales. I'm wiping out all of this stuff I currently have listed:http://www.discogs.com/seller/ItchyandScratchyRecsObviously if it's listed cheaper it's not $2. Thanks
9/26/2012 9:35:43 PM
hey billy corgan, thanks for not releasing a standard reissue of mellon collie on vinyl in addition to the one with all the extra crap i'm not concerned with. i really appreciate it.
10/31/2012 1:06:35 PM
^ the vinyl mellon collie reissue actually doesnt come with all the bonus tracks, its the original album just on 4 records.
10/31/2012 1:34:52 PM
it still comes in a big package with all the extra artwork and all that. i don't think you can just get the LPs for $20-30 like you could with the other reissues.
10/31/2012 2:05:25 PM
I realize that most things you buy pressed to vinyl these days has a digital component in there somewhere, as it's hard to avoid and remasters don't tend to stay loyal to an antiquated method of remastering. It's just too time-consuming and a pain...That being said, the Beatles LPs that just came out today are basically:
11/13/2012 10:19:36 PM
Just picked up the Love - Forever Changes reissue for Record Store Black Friday. If anyone is unfamiliar with this band or album, I would HIGHLY recommend getting this LP; especially if you've recently broken up with someone or feel contemplative. Regardless of that, this has been in my top 10 albums for a LONG time. Like the others (Tame Impala - Lonerism, I have the US press, the signed UK press, and the deluxe UK edition AND the CD), I have like 4 or 5 copies of this album. Hahaha, make fun of me. whatever...
11/17/2012 5:10:11 PM
shut up
11/18/2012 4:19:06 PM
What have you nerds been digging on lately? Nice Price has been KILLING it for me lately.
1/18/2013 11:52:09 PM
Gonna be having a HUGE vinyl sale at the D-Town Market at Motorco in Durham in March. There won't be any duds; I've weeded out the Streisands, Alperts and Ferrante and Teichers. Lots of singles for 1-2 bucks, and albums for around 3 or so. Will update when I get a date set, but if you're looking for some straight up good music for cheap, this will be for you.
2/23/2013 1:08:59 AM
Might finally get my hands on a copy of "Fever to Tell." We'll see how the price comes out.
2/23/2013 1:12:02 AM
Just reading through some of the past posts where I mentioned record stores being predatory over what they offer versus what they sell for - I think it was a pretty myopic stance I was taking, and probably stems from an issue I have with a certain record store in the area that essentially masks its dumb prices with the stupidity of the ignorant. Anyway, based on personal experience, selling on eBay is a pretty rigorous pain in the ass when you have tons of records to sell. As a store, however, selling is your sole responsibility. I have a full-time job and still manage to get stuff listed almost daily. I had one crazy album go for almost $500 that I had to ship to the UK, but it still wasn't that much of a pain in the ass. I like to be honest with the people I buy these things from, but you're right. Sometimes, it is a total shot in the dark. I would have never guessed the record in question would be worth anything near what it went for. I just try to keep it honest, and I don't think making money or making record collecting a job is the way to go. For me, it's more an experiment to get good music to the people who most appreciate it.
