Both teams have mediocre O-lines and average receivers.

his mechanics need work and need to be more consistent. for sure. and his 4th year in the league, you'd really think he'd able to have that down pat.

even if he lacks humility - is that the mark of a bad QB? that's just my issue. who cares if he celebrates first downs and touchdowns?

he's playing a goddamn game. god forbid he gets excited when he's successful.

if only he were a consummate professional like Tom Brady and got in refs faces while screaming at the top of his lungs. so much humility.

A first down is a minor accomplishment that happens dozens of times a game.

i can see how fans wouldn't like newton's celebrations. but that doesn't make him a bad QB and it really has little bearing on his overall ability to play QB and reach that next level of play. that's an inconsequential criticism, really.

he only does it when he runs for a first down, btw. it's not like he throws a 2 yard pass and stewart takes it 8 more yards and cam runs downfield to celebrate.

Steve smith spins the ball every time he gets a first down, don't remember many people criticizing him for it.

well a "personal" first down doesn't happen dozens of times per game

i wish people would criticize newton's mechanics and decision making more than his personality

^^exactly. you can make very legitimate criticisms about his play. not his celebrations

Quote :

for whatever reasons, quarterbacks are held to a high standard when it comes to celebrating

What rubs people the wrong way about Cam is what he represents.

He represents a culture that is "me first". I'm skating on thin ice because there are undertones of racism. But it's not racism, because you have Russell Wilson. So more like cultural bias.

Cam needs to understand that when it comes to being a leader, the "me first" attitude will only hinder him. He needs humility and he needs to put his priorities in order.

Get the fuck off the Belk's catwalk and get in the film room. Work on your mechanics. Get a fricken sports psychologist and learn how to communicate (including non verbal).

He's got all the talent to be a top tier QB. But I worry he'll underachieve- at the cost of the Panthers.

People have preconceived notions about Cam reinforced by the media that they don't care to actually verify.

Like the idea that he puts a towel over his head when he's sulking and the team is losing, or that he sits by himself on the bench instead of talking to teammates and coaches.

Both of those things are total bullshit but since they reinforce the narrative that people who have, let's call it, a natural disposition to hate Cam people believe it anyway. He's not "One of the good 'un's" like Wilson is.

I'm not saying that racism is dead. Far from it.

And racism does come into play, in terms of level of resentment.

PS- I have a friend who's a black.

I definitely buy that it's "cultural bias" or whatever you wanna call it. People, like others have said, have preconceived notions. Like the talk of him needing to get in the film room more and get off the Belk catwalk. Russell Wilson and Peyton Manning are in all kinds of commercials. Obviously they've won Super Bowls. But Being in commercials or endorsing shit does not necessarily hinder a player from still putting in the hours studying film and practicing. His mechanics are inconsistent - throwing off his back foot and stuff like that sometimes, even when he has time in the pocket. That's discouraging because he's now been in the league 4 years and you'd hope that a correctable issue like that would have been better addressed so far.

But you can say, Cam needs to work on his mechanics. Without saying "and get off the catwalk at Belks". Those two things are mutually exclusive. All good QBs have endorsements and stuff. Being in commercials is not indicative of times spent not practicing. There are plenty of fair criticisms to make about his game without resorting to the preconceived, unfounded notions (or "cultural bias") we hear so much about. Just say, "Cam needs to be a more consistent and accurate passer. This problem is probably due to his inconsistent mechanics" instead of falling into the trap of saying "Cam's mechanics suck because he does commercials instead of practicing"

The "me-first" stuff is bullshit to. What's the basis for it? He does TD and 1st down celebrations? That's not selfish. There haven't really been any kind of locker room issues that have to come light since Cam's been the QB. You don't hear teammates saying stuff bad about him. As far as the lockerroom and his teammates go, it would seem that he's respected as a leader of the team. So I don't see the basis for the "selfish" criticism. Again, that's part of the preconceived notions people have about him that are unfounded.

@dmspack point taken on the endorsements and the film room. I'll conceded that.

I guess I'm in the camp that to be a great leader you need to have certain traits. That said, there will always be exceptions to that rule. Not everyone has to be like Steve Jobs to be a visionary. The same goes for QB.

I'm not in the trade Cam camp, but I worry that he's going to break the bank and make it that the Panthers won't be able to sign anyone else. Why do I think that? Because Cam acts more like a receiver (see Rod Tidwell) than a bring-your-lunch type like Russell* or Peyton.

* Yes, Russell is about to be the highest paid QB, but Seattle is practically getting an on-field OC.

But I'll end w/ some positives about Cam:
- He doesn't drink. It may not sound like a big deal, but he's in his early-mid 20s, good looking, famous, and wealthy.

- He's maturing. He doesn't sulk and pout like he did the first 2 years.

- His refusal of pain meds. I don't really know why I like this, but it's kinda like the alcohol thing. He wants a clear mind.

- His peers. I'll take Cam over Dalton, Kaep, Cutler, and co.

This all may be a moot point since Jerry Richardson has ran this franchise into the ground. Since he got his new shiny pig heart, he's lost his mind. This is our biggest issue, not Cam. Our owner has gone downhill and his "get off my lawn" and "address me as Mr. Richardson" reputation scares off FAs who don't want to work for a pissed off, Fox News listening, old bitter white man.

Pretty sure guys that get hit in the head for a living don't give a fuck who signs their million dollar pay checks

Also, RW is nowhere near the OC-on-the-field that Peyton is. Peyton, who does more commercials than any athlete in the world. Is that why he played like shit yesterday? Or is he such a good QB, that historically in the postseason, he tries to do TOO much. While guys like RW and Rodgers spout the "we're going to prepare like every other game" line, Peyton obsesses over postseason games, and ends up trying to do too much, then losing.

/tangent

I agree. And I think his upcoming contract is gonna be interesting. Because above average Qbs are certainly at a premium. That's why see Flacco (he has won a Super Bowl, obviously), Dalton, and guys like that get locked up for such big contracts. Paying a slightly above average QB a ton of money is the better/safer option than saving money on a cheap, unproven QB. Because unless you get lucky with a Russell Wilson, a 3rd round pick on his rookie contract, balling at QB you're most likely gonna have a shitty QB situation unless you spend the money on a guy like Newton. It sucks because it does lock up so much money, but you kinda have to do it unless you wanna take your chances with a Ryan Fitzpatrick or Kyle Orton-type veteran.

Cam was over 60% on 28 attempts despite at LEAST 4 drops

Most of his overthrows were on the first 2 drives. Wish he could start faster though.

Man it's so nice when there's a game when things don't bounce your way (2 of those picks were crazy coincidence and the other was an unbelievable play on a pretty good throw) AND the refs are against you (Seriously refs? Since when can you throw flags after review?) but still ends up with a W.

Panthers didn't play a great game but still ended up with a W. Makes me feel good about this team.
