I'm disappointed that Restricted redacted his comment. I meant to post this in the "ask a police" thread as well to solicit a comment.

I feel like I should be more a guide to threads related to law enforcement - correct misconceptions about law or procedure w/out injecting my opinion. This was one of those situations, though it applied to the story you posted, it would have just created the usually TSB shenanigans.

It's legal: cops seize cell phone, impersonate ownerCourt says sending texts using a seized iPhone doesn't violate privacy rights. In November 2009, police officers in the state of Washington seized an iPhone belonging to suspected drug dealer Daniel Lee. While the phone was in police custody, a man named Shawn Hinton sent a text message to the device, reading, "Hey whats up dogg can you call me i need to talk to you." Suspecting that Hinton was looking to buy drugs from Lee, Detective Kevin Sawyer replied to the message, posing as Lee. With a series of text messages, he arranged to meet Hinton in the parking lot of a local grocery store—where Hinton was arrested and charged with attempted possession of heroin.http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/07/its-legal-cops-seize-cell-phone-impersonate-owner/

Anaheim police shoot unarmed man in head, let him bleed to death. Later that day they open fire on a group of protesters including women and children with rubber bullets and unleash a police dog, which proceeds to attack a woman holding a baby and a bystander not involved with the protest.Well played, Anaheim PD, well played.http://blogs.ocweekly.com/navelgazing/2012/07/manuel_diaz_anaheim_police.phphttp://www.theagitator.com/2012/07/23/compare-the-headlines/

US Attorneys Refuse to Assure Judge That They Are Not Already Detaining Citizens Under NDAA The US government seems determined to have the power to do away with due process and Americans’ right to a trial.I am one of the lead plaintiffs in the civil lawsuit against the National Defense Authorization Act, which gives the President the power to hold any US citizen anywhere for as long as he wants, without charge or trial. In May, following a March hearing, Judge Katherine Forrest issued an injunction against it; this week, in a final hearing in New York City, US government lawyers essentially asserted even more extreme powers – the power to entirely disregard the Judge and the law. Indeed, on Monday, August 6, Obama’s lawyers filed an appeal to the injunction – a profoundly important development that as of this writing has been scarcely reported. In the March hearing, the US lawyers had confirmed that yes, the NDAA does give the President the power to lock up people like journalist Chris Hedges and peaceful activists like myself and other plaintiffs. Government attorneys have stated on record that even war correspondents could be locked up indefinitely under the NDAA. Judge Katherine Forrest had ruled for a temporary injunction against an unconstitutional provision in this law – after government attorneys refused to provide assurances to the court that plaintiffs and others would not be indefinitely detained for engaging in first amendment activities. Twice the government has refused to define what it means to be an “associated force”, and it claimed the right to refrain from offering any clear definition of this term, or clear boundaries of power under this law. This past week’s hearing was even more terrifying: incredibly, in this hearing, Obama’s attorneys refused to assure the court, when questioned, that the NDAA’s provision – one that permits reporters and others who have not committed crimes to be detained without trial -- has not been applied by the US government anywhere in the world -- AFTER Judge Forrest’s injunction. In other words, they were saying to a US judge that they could not or would not state whether Obama’s government had complied with the legal injunction that she had lain down before them.To this, Judge Forrest responded that if the provision has indeed been applied, the United States government itself will be in contempt of court. Government attorneys also, in this hearing, again presented no evidence to support their position -- and brought forth no witnesses....http://dailycloudt.com/voice/358/us-attorneys-refuse-to-assure-judge-that-they-are-not-already-detaining-citizens-under-ndaa

White House Pulls Down TSA Petition Just Before The 25,000th VoteBreaking News | August 12, 2012 | 7 Comments(USA Hitman) The White House removed a petition about the TSA airport screening procedures from the White House “We the People” website.About 22,500 of the 25,000 signatures necessary for a response from the Administration were obtained when the White House unexpectedly cut short the time period for the petition. The site also went down for “maintenance” following an article in Wired.com (http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/08/nude-scanner-order/) that sought support for the campaign:“A federal appeals court Wednesday ordered the Transportation Security Administration to explain why it hasn’t complied with the court’s year-old decision demanding the agency hold public hearings concerning the rules and regulations pertaining to the so-called nude body scanners installed in U.S. airport security checkpoints.http://govtslaves.info/white-house-pulls-down-tsa-petition-just-before-the-25000th-vote/

The National Weather Service (NWS) has put out a bid solicitation for 46,000 hollow point bullets and 500 paper targets. That seem a bit out of place to anyone???? https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&tab=core&id=bfd95987a1ad9a6dfb22bca4a19150cb&_cview=0

^^ that is very out of place and very strange. i'd really like to know more about why the NOAA feels they need all these firearms, ammo and targets... major "wtf" moment.
8/14/2012 2:10:57 PM
That ammunition is likely going to Agents in the OIG and/or armed security guards for their sites throughout the US. Doesn't seem too crazy.

you might not use hollow point bullets for target practice and training, but if its what theyre expected to carry then its what theyre going to qualify with.why would you qualify with a different load? as soon as youre in the field your POI is going to change.it might not be cost effective, but government never is!

The Department of Homeland Security has redacted information relating to the quantity of bullets it is buying following a controversy concerning the agency’s purchase of over a billion rounds of ammo, which many fear is a sign the federal government is preparing for civil unrest in the United States.DHS Classifies New Ammo Purchases Following ControversyDespite the fact that documents are only supposed to be redacted if authorized by Congress or for national security reasons, a solicitation posted on the FedBizOpps website yesterday concerning ammunition purchases made by the DHS on behalf of Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) contains numerous blacked out sections. The classified portions of the document include references to the amount of 223 62 and 223 64 grain ammunition being purchased. The solicitation explains how the contract put out by the DHS to purchase the ammunition was not subject to “full and open competition,” a process justified by what the DHS claims was an “unusual and compelling urgency” to acquire the bullets, noting that there is a shortage of bullets which is threatening a situation which could cause “substantial safety issues for the government” should law enforcement officials not be adequately armed. The DHS’ decision back in March to purchase of 450 million rounds of .40-caliber hollow point bullets that are designed to expand upon entry and cause maximum organ damage prompted questions as to why the federal agency required such powerful bullets and in such large quantities merely for training purposes. This was followed up by a more recent order for a further 750 million rounds of assorted ammunition, including bullets that can penetrate walls.Given the fact that the DHS is also acquiring riot gear in preparation for civil unrest which could take place at the upcoming DNC, RNC and presidential inauguration, the purchase of ammunition in such massive numbers has stoked fears that the federal government could be preparing to use force against the American people. This screenshot illustrates how the DHS has blacked out information pertaining to the amount of bullets being purchased.http://www.infowars.com/dhs-classifies-ammo-purchase-following-controversy/omg it's infowars! They show direct sources from FedBizOpps.gov on this one. Take of it what you will.
