You're being unreasonable because you think "NUKES BAD" without rational thought. Arbitrarily demanding that something that could "potentially kill millions" needs to be 100% automated (like automation would eliminate that risk in the first place) doesn't have any rational support.

That measly Virginia earthquake exceeded design parameters for nearby nuke plant. The NRC is "investigating".http://www.power-eng.com/articles/2011/08/nuclear-regulators-continue-inspection-of-plant.htmlCan't happen here.

8/29/2011 3:11:03 PM
^^ sounds like it possibly exceeded one of the associated parameters for seismic design and no significant damage has been found. I believe the parameter they exceeded was probably acceleration which will affect the bolting of equipment and such. However, the other thing to keep in mind is that there is usually a double-dip safety factor there. There is a generous safety factor on the design load itself used to design and select supports, bolts, etc., but the bolts themselves are manufactured with a safety factor that can be full multiples of the failure stress it is designed to handle (which was already an increased design stress). Also, the natural gas power plant nearby also shutdown automatically during the earthquake (like it was supposed to). Should we tear that facility down? Clearly it is not designed to handle natural disasters since it needs to be shut down for safety purposes during an earthquake.[Edited on August 29, 2011 at 3:34 PM. Reason : ]

I'd love to see smc travel over to India and tell villagers that are getting electricity for the first time in their lives that they should protest to close the nuclear plants b/c they pose a tiny tiny chance of causing a disaster. Talk about a lolocoaster.

nothing got damaged at North Anna that they know of. They're concerned that an auxillary control building might have shifted slightly, but that building only houses third level backup safety features. This is just the NRC being overly cautious, and nutcases like smc are trying to make precautionary measures out to be doomsday scenarios.[Edited on August 30, 2011 at 10:41 AM. Reason : .]

totally different. doesn't mean it's dead yet. It's still very much alive, so much so that all it takes is a republican-controlled senate. and it should be fucking used. there's no evidence that it's not a suitable place. the DOE has yet to show what changed from the billions of dollars of research done into the matter, even though it claims something has changed
