Well first you gotta get some soul gems, they are purple crystal looking things you'll find around wizards, you can buy them in cities or loot them from dungeons. Then you have to use a spell called Soul Trap (conjuration) on an enemy (not human) and then kill the enemy while the spell is still active. You will capture the soul if your soul gem is big enough, it varies based on how powerful the enemy is, and you can use the soul gem to recharge weapons/staffs or to enchant new stuff.[Edited on November 13, 2011 at 1:36 AM. where can you get a house early on? i need a place to store all my shit and the house in the first "real" city with the Jarl costs 5000 gold, of which I have about 1/4]
11/13/2011 5:02:27 AM
^I just ended up giving everything that was heavy and I could afford to lose to my "mercenary" girl that you can get from the quest in that same first city. That and just selling everything I could. You can buy filled soul gems from the dragon-lore mage guy in WhiteRun, or at least empty ones. I think its a little odd that you have to disenchant items to learn enchantment spells, because if everyone has to do that, then how did the first enchanted items get made? For anyone who does smithing and enchanting, you can get around needing the Arcane Smithing perk (needed to improve enchanted weapons and armor) by improving a new item first and then enchanting it.People on the 360: you can pick up and move items if you aim at an item then push and hold A. Good for dragging bodies around at least. For those with shields, apparently you can shield bash when blocking by holding LT then tapping RT. Might be common knowledge but I didn't know until I took a glance at the manual.[Quote] Is there any advantages to the different weapon types. For example why would I use a one-handed sword instead of a mace when the mace does more damage.[/quote]each weapon has different speed vs. weight vs. stamina used in attacks. Later, you can specialize in perks that give bonuses to different weapons

I think I might reroll my character

So recommendations for a new build?I had built a Cat person and was attempting to make it a thief type built with archery, sneak, and one handed weapons, kept getting my ass handed to me.
11/13/2011 8:40:45 AM
First determine what you want to be doing with your character:E.G. (Breaking and Entering, Critical Hits from Sneak, Little Magic, Creating Potions, Dual Wielding Daggers, Light Armor). Then figure out which race best suits the type of character you want to play.: http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/m0e2a/complete_list_of_skyrim_race_differences/Racial Bonuses are nice, but this is Elder Scrolls, so remember that any race can play any build, it's just that some will be better overall. It's a very elastic system.
11/13/2011 9:11:02 AM
Battlemage seems interesting, or straight up tank would be fun.
11/13/2011 9:12:45 AM
I would say that a Battle Mage uses Light Armor and a Tank Mage uses Heavy Armor. Both can be effective I'm sure, but you would probably need to offset the lack of damage absorption of the Battle Mage with other abilities, due to Light Armor. How about an Battle Mage Archer using Sneak and Archery instead of Block and Melee (Criticals)? Or how about 2-Handed Melee and Block, like a barbarian styled Battle Mage or Tank Mage, and then switch to Destruction/Restoration in both hands to heal/blow shit up? The sky is the limit, but some builds will have much more success depending on how you use the combos in a fight. If you don't like switching between Magic and Melee/Ranged A LOT, go for a pure build.[Edited on November 13, 2011 at 9:51 AM. Reason : -]

Getting your ass handed to you doesn't necessarily mean you have the wrong build, it just might mean you're in the wrong place too soon.

gah i just want to quit school and my job and play this until i die of malnourishmentthis game should come with a bottle of adderall
11/13/2011 11:05:52 AM
Is there a way to reset your follower? My dipshit housecarl got 'stuck' on a raised piece of ground that had no flat path to walk off of so she wouldnt follow me, not even out of the cave it was in.
11/13/2011 11:10:30 AM
Have you tried to fast travel somewhere? Usually they go with you even if stuck.
11/13/2011 11:13:30 AM
She won't follow you out of the cave? Mine was getting owned by a giant, nearly dead, and kneeling in pain while I looted a treasure chest and ran out of the cave...sure enough she came out soon afterwards.Mine also got stuck on a mountain somewhere when I was getting the Nettlebane, so I ended up waiting and she warped to be behind me afterwards. My housecarl is a damn beast though, she can take on giants and mammoths and shit while I will die in one hit.[Edited on November 13, 2011 at 11:33 AM. No she wasn't hurt, she was on a slightly elevated piece of ground. I guess she fell on it when we were fighting on some stairs. I can get on and off it no problem by jumping, and she will follow me when im on the elevated piece, but she wont come down off it to follow me out.I didnt think about fast travel, that may have worked but leaving the cave didnt, neither did telling her we had to part ways, etc.I just reloaded, kinda annoying. It was 100% an AI pathfinding issue.

Playing a heavy armor wearing, 2hander carrying warrior. At level 8, going through the Companion quests. This game is unreal.
11/13/2011 1:10:03 PM
i too chose 2handed heavy (orc). damn vampires killed my housecarl on our first mission out and i barely made it out.

I had a blood dragon land on top of me when I was fighting a bunch of wolves and a snow bear.I've left the main quest line far, far behind at this point. I'm deep into the Thieves' Guild quests and just got the first visitation from the Dark Brotherhood.
11/13/2011 5:28:27 PM
I keep dying in this cave in the northwest part of Whiterun to these overgrown earwig looking bugs. I think they're spitting acid or poison at me? Is there a potion or something that boosts resist to this?
11/13/2011 5:34:54 PM
this game is pretty....sometimes screenshot from my adventures....it's huge (2560x1440) so click:http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/630730981996794792/DF0610AAFA580D8A17911B563B8312CE2A44AA9E/everything maxxed with 8x MSAA and FXAA

Had a dragon land in the middle of a giant camp. The giants and the mammoths beat the crap out of
11/13/2011 7:48:09 PM
im level 9 and got too close to some place where a dragon was hiding on the way to retrieve the horn from the voice quest....did not end well.need to head to the college and get some better destro spells.
11/13/2011 8:23:01 PM
hope Azura doesn't hold a grudge
11/13/2011 8:49:43 PM
I bought a house in Whiterun. Laughed my ass off when I walked in and it pretty much barren except for my house-servant-ladywoman. I like how there is a chest where I can keep my loot I don't want to carry. Gotta make some more $ and at least get a fire going or a table or something.
11/13/2011 9:30:15 PM
is it possible to join all the different factions? like stormcloaks, companions, imperial legion, etc? or would joining one prohibit the joining of the others?
11/13/2011 10:21:32 PM
you can join thieves, mages, dark brotherhood, and companions, but you can only join one or the other for imperial legion and storm cloaks i think
11/13/2011 10:40:59 PM
I just got bitch slapped by a giant.
11/13/2011 10:47:25 PM
I had my housecarl get stuck on a slightly elevated piece of land as was mentioned above. Leaving and waiting didn't work, but she reappeared when I fast traveled
11/13/2011 11:23:28 PM
Man...a lot of these questions sound like they come from ppl who have never played a TES game before.Ah well, I guess their lives were better than mine......until now.We ALL play TES V.

I too have long abandoned the main quest. I had to go see the greybeards and was all "fuck that shit" because it is really far away. Is there any way to preserve your horse? I went into a cave and came out a day or so later and some fucking saber tooth cat killed it. I then tried to use that ritual stone to resurrect all the dead near me and it brought the cat back, but not my horse Anyone trying dual wielding? I've been trying to do it, but I am just loads better using a shield. I haven't tried using a twwo hander since they're so slow and draining, but now my housecarl basically tanks with a two hander while I attack whatever enemies. I'm pretty sure she still out damages me anyway. I can't even really take down anyone face to face when dual wielding because I'm just completely defenseless. Its decent for when the target is on my housecarl, but otherwise seems fruitless.
11/14/2011 12:03:20 AM
I started off as a Breton and got the "Conjure Familiar" skill that lets you summon a wolf spirit to fight for you. It's great to get a 3rd member in your party for those big fights.and I also want to say that I am absolutely LOVING archery in this game. it just feels so much more rewarding to increase your archery skill in this game (I never did it in Oblivion).EDIT: I was just heading up to Windhelm and then the music got all epic and all of a sudden a dragon screeches right by me. I managed to weaken him a little but had to save/quit as I'm only lv.6 and not making a lot of progress on him with my bow and novice destruction spells. It's amazing how this can happen in this game though [Edited on November 14, 2011 at 12:36 AM. Reason : ]

I am not liking the quest UI for this game (PC). It is just a cluster fuck of scroll lists with no way to sort based on location of questgiver, chain, etcI do really like the seemingly randomness of it. Ive killed a couple more dragons just randomly out in the world.I got punted by a giant while i was absorbing a dragon soul
11/14/2011 12:45:37 AM
So, guys, real talk.Is there pretty much no way to avoid becoming absorbed with this game if it's in your possession?Part of my brain is itching trying to convince me to buy it and "just be reasonable" and still do all the heaps of work I have until January. But the entirely too reasonable side of me knows that would be productivity suicide.
11/14/2011 2:38:09 AM
I was in bloodlet throne, cleared a room and left to urinate but i didn't pause. when i came back my housecarl apparently ran ahead without me and died. I like my dog companion from markarth, though.

11/14/2011 8:23:14 AM
What does killing a dragon do for you if you haven't learned a new shout? That is, I did the first main quest dungeon, got that shout, then killed the main quest dragon and could actually do the shout. Later, I've killed another dragon randomly and absorbed its soul. Can I store souls or some shit?
11/14/2011 8:25:46 AM
very highly addictive game as has been said. if you have important things going on in your life right now then definitely wait. it will be very difficult but the time you will lose prob isn't worth the importance of whatever matter: thesis, work, etc.i just visited the greybeards on the main quest. i've been doing a lot of side jobs and stuff to make money, like taking out bandit leaders. also, been exploring a lot just for the fun of it. but figured i'd advance the main quest a bit. anyway, travelling to the greybeards at the top of the mother-effing mountain was insane; took forever to get there.
11/14/2011 8:32:52 AM
I got to play about 20 minutes of this over the weekend and had a few (hopefully quick) questions:1) I didn't notice anything in the menus that would suggest that my sword and armor were degrading with use. Did they get rid of that whole repair subsystem?2) I leveled my lockpick skill and went up a character level. Lock picking wouldn't have been a Nord's major skill so I guess the two aren't related like they were in Oblivion... meaning you only character level up once you level a set number of major skills. I only got as far as choosing between magika, health, and stamina then seeing the constellations to choose from.I guess 'll have to read up on how the leveling process works. I know that whole system where you got screwed out of stat points because you failed to level certain minor skills before leveling up is gone. I guess the assumption now is that all your skills level with use, as always, and the requirements for leveling your character are?I'll have to read up on perks as well. I didn't get much time with the game, but it looked like constellations lined up with skill proficiencies. It make me think the perks were something lame like a quick +1 to one of your skill proficiency levels.3) I only talked with one trader in that short time and I didn't see how/if barter or speechcraft factored into the equation. You just sold the item for the set price. I may have missed something since I was rushed.[Edited on November 14, 2011 at 8:41 AM. Reason : -]
