Sweet, I just pulled up the police report and it indicates that he turned into my lane and collided with me. Hope their insurance sees the report and offers to cover me instead of having to go through arbitration.

Scratch that, he wrote the wrong thing in the narrative but got the diagram right. He shows their car turning into me but then says unit 2 (Me) changed lanes and collided with unit 1

You can see here that unit 1 turns into unit 2

Dude in a white nissan frontier this morning thinks he can skip the line of traffic from 440W to Wade and cut in. Well, he picked the wrong person to try to force them to let him in . I guess not so much of a bad driver, but a dick driver; and I don't mind being a dick driver back. I'm right at the exit ramp from 440; the lane stripe is solid white, not dashed. I'm in the curve and this asshole decides it's time to merge... with me beside him. Fuck that shit. I drop to 4th hit the gas; he does the same so now we're 2 wide on the exit ramp . Though it didn't last long since my car has better acceleration. I get in front of him, then I ensure my brakes are properly working. /story

well I had 2 options. slam on the brakes, letting him in front of me and risk getting rear ended or starting a chain reaction behind me.

or

hit the gas and get around the asshat.

the guy was right beside me, so I'm not sure what you'd expect one to do in the situation. I prefer the method which provides me less risk and more control, which is speeding up. Slamming on the brakes puts the control and risk on the person behind you who may not be paying attention/following too closely.

I had something similar happen yesterday turning left in a two lane turn..... the dude just cut across 3 lanes and inserted his car in front of mine. It turned out that he and I both were going in to Home Depot, and I confronted him and asked him what his problem was and why he decided to almost cause a wreck just to get to the turn. He looked at me and had a spaced-out gaze..... and I just walked away grumbling. lol

and I agree ^^ it wasn't your fault they were being a dangerous prick, fuck that

I would like to complain about every distracted jackass that turns right from Evans rd onto Aviation Parkway.
http://goo.gl/maps/jqJ24

There's a big sign that says "moving turn lane, don't stop for red lights" or something to that effect, yet inevitably I get stuck behind someone on their cell phone who insists on coming to a complete stop and waiting for traffic to clear before turning, not realizing that the lane they're in continues unimpeded.

you said you had to floor it to block him

so the safe move would be to maintain your speed or slow slightly to allow a gap for the car to safely merge in. just because he was being an asshole doesn't mean that you should also be an unsafe asshole. that's bad driving, and its dangerous.

You are dense, aren't you? He was merging INTO me. I had to either get in front of or behind him in a hurry, else I would have been hit in the driver side and/or pushed off the road. There was no "slow down slightly" option. It was either crash or get out of the way.

I hate those drivers that cut in line like that. They do it on capital heading North towards the Durant/Perry Creek intersection. The right lane is right turn only on too Perry Creek and those asshats will ride that lane all the way to the front and break in front of someone right at the light with the straight lanes backed up for almost a mile with people waiting appropriately. One driver ran through the end of that lane (So they are in no lane at all) and pulls right in front of me in the middle of the intersection almost hitting me.

its called zippering, its more efficient than stacking up in a lane too early. leave gaps for those people, it will improve traffic.

[Edited on June 4, 2013 at 3:01 PM. Reason : ^^ you accelerated, floored it, to block him. that was wrong. you bad driver asshole. ]

I call it breaking in line in this situation. When those two lanes can only allow a certain amount of cars through per light cycle and that amount is maxed out (i.e. stopped in intersection when light is green), when some one jumps in front of a car in the front that allows one less car through in the line behind them. Same amount of cars make it through intersection.

Yeah...I hate when an interstate highway is about to become one-lane, and some fucker drives all the way to the very front and expects someone to let him in. I'm usually all about letting people in, but I actively block people who do that. No cuts.

not really. what right do people have to pull to the very front and then slide in in front of everybody else? they can sit there for 10 minutes for all I care, and I hope they do.

because using all of the lanes is the most efficient method. if everyone starts to line up as soon as they see a line, it actually makes traffic and congestion worse. its called zippering.

You do realize that "zippering" shouldn't require people to slam on brakes, right?

I mean, it's one thing to use the open bandwidth that others aren't using. It's a completely different scenario if you pass multiple opportunities to "zipper in" because you want to jump the line; thereby forcing the whole line of cars to brake and re-accelerate to accommodate you. I freely let people zipper in when it's a reasonable option, but fuck anyone who expects me to slam on brakes because their dumb ass couldn't take one of the many free flowing options that were presented to them before their lane ran out.

okay, maybe that would be faster

but if no one else is doing it, then I'm not going to let Joe Schlub do it. if I sat in this line for 5 minutes, I want Joe to have to do the same. he should suffer as I have suffered.

you should pass multiple opportunities, if you took the first opportunity it would just be inefficient lining up

and no one is saying to slam on brakes, the cars in line should leave gaps. these people are talking about actively speeding up to block; its inefficient, increases congestion,a nd is dangerous.

its also less stressful to zipper. while you guys are flooring it to block gaps then standing on the brakes to not hit the car in front of you, i'm leaving a large gap between me and the car in front of me and am just crawling along in 2nd gear not giving a fuck. and it takes me the same amount of time.

I'm only saying I'll block the guy if he's gone to the very front, as ^^ says
if he wants to get in when the opportunity presents itself (i.e. well before the front) that's fine

^^ I don't really believe that...why wait until you have to come to a dead stop before you merge?

keep moving and merge when the opportunity presents itself...seems to me that's a much faster method.

if car alternately pull from open lane and closed lane at the very front, then it's as jerky as it could possibly be...like a stop sign.

you shouldn't be coming to a dead stop to merge, bad drivers shouldn't be closing gaps to cut them off. and i'm not claiming that every driver who does this is a good driver, they could be bad drivers for other reasons, I am just pointing out that you are a bad driver if you close a gap to block them and are contributing to traffic congestion.

yes, I stole this from wiki

Quote :
"The late merge method has not been found to increase throughput (throughput is the number of vehicles that pass through a point in a given period of time). However, it considerably reduces queue ("backup") length (because drivers use the ending lane until its end) and reduces speed differences between the two lanes, increasing safety[1]"

it says it does increase safety though

Also, I remember this topic being covered before on here, maybe even in this thread, lol

The only people who claim line cutting on the road is 'zippering' are line cutters.

I could probably count the number of times I've seen true zippering of traffic in my lifetime on one hand.
What I see almost everyday on 40 is already stopped lines of cars and cars at the back of the line jumping out and racing down an empty lane to get ahead of the line. Absolutely nothing about that improves traffic and those people are fuckheaded twats.

I think the difference between the scenario I referenced and what you're talking about is pretty obvious IRL. There's no shortage of douchebags who fuck up the flow of traffic by passing up opportunity after opportunity to zipper in; choosing instead to pass a handful of additional cars when it is clear that there is no obvious means for them to enter the flow of traffic without starting a chain reaction of braking to accommodate them. They're not all bad drivers; but they are all douchebag drivers.

I zipper like a motherfucker, but I'm eying the traffic 1/4 mile ahead or more to pick an opportune time to merge without fucking things up for everyone else. I consider zippering to be one of the benefits of being a conscientious driver.

Saw three cars without headlights on, (one truck with dusk lights and foglights instead) between 8:50 and 9:20PM tonight. Sunset was 8:27. Flashed one of them my high beams, but I don't know if they got the message.

There needs to be a light sensor that makes the car chime when it's time to turn on the lights or something. Newer cars with always-glowing dashes and daytime running lights (if you're lucky) are leading to people forgetting to turn on their lights.

so i came to a stop sign on a two lane rural road
another car coming from across the street
since he is slowing down to make his REQUIRED complete stop,
I go ahead and turn left, as soon as I start turning,
he tries to speed up and hit me

just barely missed me, I guess he thought right turn made it legal not to stop

since i was coming home from work and it was early in the morning,
I took it slow (safe in rain folks) he kept flashing his lights and nosing around me
once he ever put both of his hands up to commend my safe driving
hope my safe driving didnt make him late for work

Yesterday I made a mistake. I had a left turn coming up so I got in the turn lane but since I'm unfamiliar with this road I realized once I was over that my left turn was right after this one and if I turned I would have ended up on 422 so I looked to my right saw I had space to merge back into my original lane and did so, all the cars were at a slow 2-3 mile pace because of traffic anyways. The bitch behind me threw her arms up and slammed on her horn. The light turned yellow right after that and I guess I could have kept going, but I didn't and waited patiently for the next green so I could make my intended left at the next intersection.

You're always required to make a complete stop at a multi way stop intersection and right of way is determined by who arrived at the intersection and stopped first, not by what the driver is doing after they stop.
