Hurney and Fox getting fired and us not making the playoffs for few years

@Tree: We didn't need a bunch of free agents. Hell, I would have been happy with them getting just a 2nd wideout and trying to pick up some depth at QB

first of all, stop should making yourself sound even dumber with your ignorant language. if you want to talk about it, talk about it. you're not hurting me by making up 2nd grade words bud...but do what you want to do...

The evidence is in the fact that this is a make or break year for Fox. Why, in his contract year, would he get together with Marty Hurney and decide "hey, lets cut some key, experienced players, and go young...". Given Hurney has a say in managing players and deciding what to do with them, ultimately its Jerry Richardson controlling and preparing his finances for 2011 and beyond.

If you can't see or understand that, then I guess you can tell me what role Jerry Richardson plays.

He just sits back and rides in golf carts at Wofford, during an unprecedented time in the NFL, I suppose. Nevermind what long time Carolina Panther insider Pat Yasinskas, and the general public think. Fire Fox! Fire Hurney! Our franchise is fucked!

Why don't we let the offseason and free agency play out before anyone pushes the panic button, which is what tons of people seem to be doing.

I agree, but the point I'm making is you don't have to do all of that stuff in the first week of free agency...training camp doesn't start for another 4 months

To each his own I guess.

If you can legitimately say that the team we field for Week 1 next year is better than the 8-8 team that walked off the field this season I will be happy to eat crow (and I hope I have to trust me) but it ain't happening.

I thought we were close to being in the mix with a couple key pick ups.

^^Yeah this whole thing is bullshit. We very well could end up like the Bucs did last year. Its one thing to cut older guys, but at least wait until you have someone signed to take their place. Right now JR is just cutting to save money. If he's going to be paying half for the team, I'm going to be expecting some discount on my season tickets.

Ribs,

free agency this year isn't like most years. Most players who would be ufa are instead only restricted free agents due to the CBA expiring. Now, tell me, which free agent qb or wr should we sign? The qb market is dreadful, maybe someone gets cut that we can pick up but it doesn't look great. And what about wr? TO? Nate burleson got a ridiculous contract in Detroit. The market simply does not overflow with talent.

And to boot, we have little ammunition in draft picks so we can't sign the newly restricted free agents worth a damn.

Like people have said, free agency isn't a week old yet. Chill bruh.

What would you have done, specifically, if you were in Hurneys spot, assuming the big cat isn't putting the kibosh on you signing big money?

The FA QB market is never very good (good QB's just don't ever get to free agency) but this year it's worse than ever.

Pretty much all the NFL Live guys agree that Delhomme is actually the best FA QB this year.

^^ Damn at least one person understands what I'm trying to say.

kevmcd86 I'm sorry for calling you names earlier. I really am.

However, I stand my by statements about Hurney and Big Cat. I'm surprised that you as a big Panthers fan yourself aren't outraged by this jack move that they are pulling on us right now. They're dumping salary left and right and don't plan on paying one red cent to a FA as they baton down the hatches for the coming owner's lockout. As a result, the team they trot out next year will be a guaranteed embarrassment.

I'm just pissed because I recognized that this team could go places with just a few changes, and had high hopes they would spend that extra 16 mill freed up from Pep on some of those guys to put us over the top. Instead they just pocketed that shit and continued to dump anyone that they might have to actually pay.

Doesn't that bother you at all?

We had a chance to compete in the division next year by just sticking with our guys and adding a couple new ones in the mix. However, we've lost what, 10 players, mostly veterans and starters, and no one on here seems to give a shit.

There is no way this team can regain enough talent to even compete next year now.

@thegoodlife: Hurney has been terrible for this team since '07.

He found out Pep had no intentions of signing when he turned down the largest contract in the NFL and stood pat while Pep bent the franchise over financially and then walked without ANY compensation when he could have traded him for multiple picks after that '07 season.

He signed Jake Delhomme to quite possibly the worst contract in professional sports last year.

He traded away our first round pick this year to move up 10 spots and get Everette Brown. Terrible move as we could have used that pick desperately this year. In retrospect, we could have gotten Brandon Marshall for the same pick that landed us Everette Brown.

He made 0 moves last off season when it was clear we had aging vets and the Arizona debacle had just happened.

Those are right off the top of my head, but I'm sure more will come to mind.

@Genghis: I'm not sure there is anything that you can do if the owner is putting the screws to you like that, and if that's the case, and Big Cat is telling him to fire sale our personel, then fuck Richardson for cheating the fans and sponsors out of their hard earned money this season. It's his duty to those ticketholders and sponsors to try and field a competitive team year in and year out.

KEEP: Kemo, Lewis, Diggs, Johnson

1) Try and sign a 2nd wideout: Guys like Antonio Bryant and Kevin Walter are out there as UFA's and deals like what Baltimore got for Boldin were well within our striking range. There are also guys like David Clowney who's a burner and the fallback veteran Chris Chambers. Every single one of those guys are better than Jarrett.

2) Try and get some depth behind Moore at QB: We need another arm bad. We could go the stop-gap solution with Chad Pennington or try and put one of our pieces on the block and see if we can get a young QB and a pick back. I'm not going to go through every team's roster and investigate it, but if we made it known we had Williams on the block I'm sure there would be plenty of interest there. The more likely solution would be to get Pennington as a band-aid and draft a QB with our second rounder to get the necessary depth there though.

3) Sign one more DE: Vaden Bosch would been a great transition from Peppers, and then there were big money guys like Kampman. Reggie Hayward and Derrick Burgess would be able to provide some quality depth too.

We really didn't need that much at all. 2 maybe 3 guys tops. But, with 9 of 22 starters now gone the problems we had are exponentially larger.

[Edited on March 9, 2010 at 10:54 PM. Reason : we are currently 40 mill under last year's cap so there is plenty of money to attract guys]

dude do you really not understand why that had to happen

Jake already had a huge chunk of money guaranteed to him previous to the new contract. Sure, they gave him some extra cash, but he was already going to get a large sum. The problem was, with the way his contract was structured, he had a high cap hit that, coupled with peppers franchise hit, would have made it close to impossible to sign any draft picks.

Remember that? When we were right up against the cap?

So yes, they gave Jake a 5 year contract, but in it they spread the cap hit out, and gave him some extra money for being a champ about it, and because yeah, they really like Jake.

If they didn't do that, the entire offseason last year would not have been able to function. we wouldn't have had room to bring in anyone.

they HAD to have jake restructure the contract. I have no problem with that. good for him. but now that his elbow is all fucked up i guess we can't remember the good times, that's cool.

Also, if you think Hurney wanted to let Peppers go without any compensation, then I just don't know what to say. You think anyone is going to trade assets of any value to pick up a guy with his reputation for over a million a game? Really? Especially when homeboy went to the public and said he wanted out, it really doesn't give Hurney any leverage whatsoever.

Quote :
"He traded away our first round pick this year to move up 10 spots and get Everette Brown. Terrible move as we could have used that pick desperately this year. In retrospect, we could have gotten Brandon Marshall for the same pick that landed us Everette Brown."

Did you have a problem when they traded that years first rounder the year before for Otah? Brown may have slid into the second round, but he was on the panthers board around the same area that Otah was -- things don't always work out, but remember how everyone was shitting themselves that there was no replacement for Julius because he would probably walk? Yes, in retrospect, of course you can nitpick this shit.

Did you expect Hurney to realize that Brandon Marshall would go rogue and get tendered at only the first round level? What kind of swami shit do you expect?

and goddamn dude, here you bitch about not having any DL help, then bash the move to get one of our only DEs that look to be worth a damn.

and as for your free agent signings, Antonio Bryant wants to get wayyyyyy overpaid, Vanden Bosch isn't coming here, and we only have 4 or 5 picks total in this draft, so if you want to trade 2 of them to try and get Boldin while at the same time complaining about our needs elsewhere, I don't know what to say.

c'mon man

holy shit i just saw this gem

Quote :
"but if we made it known we had Williams on the block"

just stop dude. stop. we let jake go, we have Matt Moore and Steve Smith as our only offensive option outside the run game, and you want to trade DeAngelo, a proven integral piece to our teams success, for some pieces that may or may not work out? I think we've gone around on this issue before, but trading one of our backs is borderline retarded.

not much more...he is still in his rookie contract...in fact stewart makes over twice what deangelo makes...for one because stewart was a higher draft pick...also because he was drafted more recently, ie salaries have been increasing

deangelo williams is easily one of the best value players in the league right now, and next year is the final year of his rookie contract...trading him now would be moronic based on talent vs. cost

as opposed to trading him when? after this season when he's no longer under contract? i think we saw with the whole peppers thing that the front office is incapable of pulling a franchise + trade

Either way you gotta do something this offseason. Sign him to an extension now while his stock might be down a little and when a 4-5 year deal ends when he's 30-31 or trade him before he leaves and we get nothing (or a worse option: we sign him to a monster deal a year later, watch him decline and stewart goes elsewhere when his deal is up AKA the Tomlinson/Turner scenario)

after this season is a big question mark for the entire NFL

you are going to see a whole lot of one year contracts on free agents in the coming months

besides, say what you want about the perception of the Panthers compared to other older, bigger name franchises...its an attractive team for running backs since we want to run the ball so much...its not exactly like trying to lure a big name receiver here with Jake at QB...an RB like Deangelo knows he will get a shitload of touches in this offense.

Of all 32 NFL owners, Richardson is probably most knowledgeable about the future of the NFL. I just don't see the need to panic this early in free agency, given the state of the league's future being up in the air, and that only a few big name free agents have been signed so far. Not to sound like a broken record, but its early in March. We're barely a month removed from the Super Bowl. The offseason is a long one, and we will make moves. Maybe soon, maybe after players get cut post-NFL draft, maybe all of the above. But its too early to panic.

peppers 6 years
manumaleuna 5 years
antrel rolle 5 years
kampman 4 years
boldin (traded in final year of his deal...hmm) 3 year extension
jamal williams 3 years
chester taylor 3 years
scott fujita 3 years
randle el (cut) 3 years
tony pashos 3 years
will witherspoon (traded midseason and cut a few days ago) 3 years
thomas jones (cut and old) 2 years

yea this is totally different from all the other years where owners give out ridiculous contracts

I'm completely reassured knowing that Richardson will be one of the major faces of the owners who will be pissing off the players union in the negotiations. I'm sure that will play well for our organization

that was just a cursory glance...other guys have signed long term deals too...vanden bosh, corey williams, dansby, dunta robinson

I think we can agree the Bears overpaid for Peppers

Kampman tore his ACL last year, don't know why people are so big on him

Boldin expressed multiple times not wanting to play for Arizona...unlike Deangelo

Jamal Williams is old

We obviously don't need Chester Taylor (or Thomas Jones)

Randle El is actually pretty intriguing

Although we shouldn't have stuck with Dan Morgan as long as we did, Witherspoon's play the last few years, combined with Beason + Davis makes Witherspoon look like a chump

And I know you're not just talking about players the Panthers would possibly want, you're talking about the state of the NFL in general...well where are the Albert Haynesworth $100 million dollar deals this year?

Besides, due to the CBA not being resolved yet (1 year before it runs out), there is verbiage in the agreement that changes the whole free agency landscape. If the CBA didn't run out until 2012 instead of 2011, guys like Thomas Davis would be free agents. Ie, there would be a much better free agent class this year, and a lot more moves.

Again my main point is not to panic, its March. The Bears made their fans happy right now. Cutler made them happy a year ago. The fans weren't happy on Sundays.

peppers got 92 mil. haynesworth got more because he is a better player and because dan snyder may have finally realized his idiotic strategy of signing FAs and ignoring the draft wont work (IIRC he fired his GM)

i dont want the FO to pull a redskins and sign a ton of FAs. i want them to do something that suggests they have some foresight and/or ability to put together a super bowl capable team, rather than settle for an average team that with the right breaks might have a playoff caliber year (as weve all seen, wrong breaks = 7-9) and then pray they get hot in the playoffs

Colbert never had the plays called for him so you never know, but my guess is no. Either way I think the most important thing you want in a WR is Catching which neither are great.
