I just want to point out : there are a few STATES without 3G coverage by ATT.

I know what the hell I want and it's not another $800 device that does stuff half-assed.Yes, the general audience will eat this crap up, but it doesn't make it a good device. The lenovo hybrid seems like much better of a solution, they just don't have the fanboi and general public reputation that Apple has. It's purely marketing. You also know the news sources aren't going to publish much negative commentary on the matter as they need eReaders to catch on so they can survive.

after thoroughly reading everything, there is no way this device is worth to me what they are charging. I suppose I can see it for other people since everyone has different needs/wants, so I'm not saying its not worth it period. But with a laptops, a phone with a data plan, a desktop, etc. I can't think of hardly any uses I would get from this. I would never use it at home with the laptops, desktop, etc. that I have around. As far as being out and about, its a little too big for me to carry if I am not actually PLANNING on using it. I'd be just fine using my phone in those cases. When I am actually planning to be out somewhere where I want internet access, I just bring my laptop which has more space and is more powerful than this.I guess if I have racked my brain and thought of very few niche uses for it, then I am just not the targeted audience. /shrugMaybe after it has been out for a bit and people figure out what to do with it and how to develop for it then I might see some cool uses popping up. I'll keep my eye out for that, but for now I'll pass.[Edited on January 27, 2010 at 5:26 PM. Reason : ]

I think it will have a big wow factor, because up until now all the cool apps have been on a 3.5" iPhone/ipod screen. Now with a 10" screen everything will be more accessible in terms of passing it around, showing people photos/videos, playing chess, etc etc.

^not quite. The iWork app is a good example of it not being just a bigger iPod touch. The iWork app specifically might be useless to anyone using the iPad but it demonstrates the sort of apps that could be effective on this device that wouldn't be nearly as effective on an iPod.

I dont know the first thing about cricket. The last time i was at the beach (wilmington) the iphone sucked. The last time i was in the mtns of NC the iphone sucked. It took me ~5 minutes to get a sports bet in over edge. I think most users would prefer to use the VZ network with their 3G apple product(s) (ipad and iphone). Is that flawed?

hmmm last year I thought a tablet would be cool. "I'd be writing notes that I could search? Sweet." Then I thought, well, without a keyboard I could do almost zero actual word processing like writing papers or reports for the office (unless the "virtual keyboard" is a lot better than most). "If I can't work on it, fuck it." But then people in this thread made good points about how this would really be a mobile entrainment device, not a workstation. So I am thinking they are cool again. "Take board games, books, movies, and music *anywhere* in a single slim container? Alright!"But, then I remembered that Apple was making it. So it's probably going to cost me an extra $1,000 bucks just to have the privilege of owning a device that duplicates barely half the functionality of my IBM Thinkpad X30. "FUCK YOU VERY MUCH, STEVE JOBS!!"[Edited on January 27, 2010 at 5:58 PM. Reason : Apple is the Establishment, Kids.]

ok? so if you make the iPod touch into an iPad it would be just as effective? So i guess it does have unique features after all. (in comparison to the iPod Touch)

^^ Ah, I see.Actually that's an important clarification: the Lenovo hybrid will be an IdeaPad. It will not have ThinkVantage pedigree.

The iPad is essentially a larger iPod Touch, but this is a meaningful distinction for a device like this. The workings of the touch interface are going to be different on the smaller, lower-res screen, vs. the larger higher res screen. If you look at the video, some of the UI decisions on the iPad would never work on an iPod Touch sized device.I don't know if this has been noted, but McGraw-Hill is humorously absent from the list of partner publishers.[Edited on January 27, 2010 at 6:16 PM. Some of the UI decisions on the iPod Touch/iPhone don't work on iPod Touch sized devices, so that's nothing new either.

Typing. Impossible on the iPod Touch. Way too small, constantly hitting the wrong letters. Useless.
1/27/2010 6:22:15 PM
learn to type? I don't have small hands but I find typing on the iPhone a lot easier than typing on any other phone I've had.
1/27/2010 6:22:54 PM
1/27/2010 6:31:41 PM
I would estimate that I type 70 words per minute at least. The keys on the touchscreen are FAR too small to be useful.
1/27/2010 6:31:47 PM
^I type around 120 on the normal keyboard. I'm sure i can type 50-60 on the iPhone keyboard.

^ Oh, I believe you. Not doubting that it has biggest keys for a handheld device.I'm saying they're still too finicky for me to get anything done.Of course I get very little practice. I despise blackberrys and will do everything I can to never have one. I'm the guy who buys the cheapest, simplest phone he can find.

just watched the video... it is smoking. I know a bunch of yall on here are "power users" but you have to realize most people in this world do 3 things: check mail, browse and look at pics. this does all that w/ a awesome interface. I think of my mom (who I will buy one for) this pretty much eliminates the need for her to have a desktop.

This thing is a huge steaming pile of smoke and mirrors. It is not a game changer, nor is it anything revolutionary. We all just got iPhone 3GS'd all over again. It is the EVOLUTIONARY next step for the iPhone platform, but the problem with Apple is that they haven't done any of the hardware work to make the iPhone and its platform push the envelope. Bigger screen is expected. Lack of camera is not. It's not something people HAVE to have - like a cell phone. That's one of the reasons the iPhone did so well: People have to have cell phones in today's world. It's easier to make that cognitive and monetary leap to the iPhone because it's a better device. The iPad is a LUXURY device being released in a recession. How many people do you know with a Kindle? I know thousands of people, hundreds of which are technophiles. I know 2 people who own a Kindle (or any ebook reader, for that matter). The market penetration for ebook readers is tiny, contrary to what Amazon would tell you (they say the Kindle has outsold the iPhone, which is absolute horse shit). The casual user doesn't drop $300 on a netbook now, so why would they drop $500 on a less-functional iPad, especially when they aren't even carrier subsidized? This entire product announcement stinks of Apple complacency.
1/27/2010 7:26:22 PM
i'm getting it just so i will look cool
1/27/2010 7:30:19 PM
^^ people said the EXACT same thing about the iPod/iPhone when they were released. You’re missing the big picture.
1/27/2010 7:40:11 PM
^^^ I don't know many people with a kindle, but I do know a whole bunch of people who have a GPS, a portable DVD player, and iPod and a hand held video game platform and they they take all of them with them on car rides with the kids. This one device would satisfy all of those. The potential is there for this to become a really great device with new use cases. There's also plenty of potential for it to become a "hobby" a la AppleTV. It's all dependent on whether people can envision uses for portable computing power that isn't a computer.^Bingo, I bet if you dig through the iPhone thread, you'll find at least one person saying:"I already have a phone, I already have an iPod, I already have a laptop/netbook. No 3G, less space than an iPod. Lame."[Edited on January 27, 2010 at 7:47 PM. Reason : asdf]

so, have the fanboys started the circle-jerk yet?I'll bet this tablet does half of the shit all the other tablets do, for twice the price as the others. But, Apple will market the hell out of it, and people won't care.
1/27/2010 7:49:16 PM
I'm an Apple fan and owner of multiple Apple products but before this thing even came out I was thinking to myself, the total lack of a need for this kind of a device is so obvious that there's no way Apple could not see it so they must have something up their sleeve that's going to make this thing fill a niche in ways that I'm just not seeing, but no, it turned out to be exactly what I imagined and less
