I picked up a large shaving scuttle by Robert Becker on eBay this week. It's freakin awesome and makes a GREAT lather. It's also half as expensive as the other "name brand" scuttles listed in this thread. It is rather large...but definitely worth it.[Edited on March 29, 2010 at 12:37 PM. Reason : .]

He puts up different colors/designs randomly as he makes them, so check back later if you dont like the ones he currently has for sale.

if you buy other items, it's only $.60 after the initial (ridiculous) $10 initial chargeso if anyone wants to go in on some scuttles...

I never get the cost arguments for switching to traditional shaving. I haven't paid for disposable razors in years thanks to coupon shopping. I've always wanted to try wet shaving, but I'm lazy and worried it would be a waste of $ since it seems like more effort than shaving in the shower (without gel/cream).

if you don't have enough disposable income to try shaving a different way then perhaps you should re-evaluate some of your choices in life

Has anybody seen the new gillette commercial? It says they're releasing somthing new june 6th....but they are being secretive as to what it is exactly.

i picked up a pair of original gillette DE razors today for $30...i didn't really want or need two, but the guy was knocked $10 off the price for both of them and i thought someone on here might be interested in one for $15 (as a spare or to try something new or for collecting or for travel or whatever)let me know!
5/1/2010 7:07:49 PM
actually, nevermind...this razor offers the best shave i've ever had, BY FARthe one pictured above has an aluminum handle that's all of 1.5 inches long (which is crazy short)...i thought i wouldn't like it, but i used it this morning and realized that it's almost perfect...not aggressive, yet it leaves my face smoother than with my merkur (which i thought was amazing)i'll try the one with the longer handle (which appears to be brass, or steel) sometime this week, see how it feels...the heads look a bit different in ornamentation, but not really in design...i'm not sure about what model these are, but definitely worth the cash monies [Edited on May 2, 2010 at 10:59 AM. Where's the best place to get DE blades? I had a sampler pack but it's almost over and I need some new blades.
5/2/2010 1:58:25 PM
^ i've got a fair number of derbys if you want to buy some (i'm also open to some trades if anyone wants to do that)...otherwise, just go to ebay, put in the brand you want, and pick the best deal [Edited on May 2, 2010 at 4:21 PM. Reason : .]
5/2/2010 4:21:06 PM
you can get them at cvs pharmacy
5/2/2010 9:30:42 PM
^ can you get GOOD ones at CVS? what brands do they have?
5/2/2010 9:51:34 PM
they're gillette razors, came in a pack of 10. I have course hair and they've worked great for me. I mean after a certain point a double edge razor is a double edged razor.
5/2/2010 10:17:59 PM
yes, but the quality of the blade is where the rubber meets the road so to speak....you dont put shitty tires on a race car and ebay is awesome for blades... i think 100 derbys run 12 bucks or so
5/2/2010 10:26:17 PM
you're definitely right, but that's taking it to a level that i'm not interesting in climbing to.I just want a close shave with no irritation/bumps and i get that with cvs blades.to each his own
5/2/2010 10:30:50 PM
westcoastshaving.com has decent pricing and a good selection
5/2/2010 10:41:25 PM
west coast shaving is where I've ordered mine so far.

I finally picked up a DE razor not too long ago and have been alternating between Personna and Derby blades. Any feedback on Feathers? I'd like to try some soon.I'm also kicking around the idea of trying my hand at a straight in the next few months.
5/2/2010 11:24:08 PM
Feathers are like shaving with a ninja sword. Retarded sharp. I like'em...it's what I use daily.
5/3/2010 8:00:48 AM
Yeah they always cut the hell out of me.. but that was when I first bought a DE razor. I'd probably be fine using them now I also don't have too thick of facial hair so anything is more or less fine for me
5/3/2010 8:50:05 AM
i use Feathers exclusively in my Merkur classic now. They are amazing, even on the 3rd shave.they are a little too aggressive in my heavy Gillette superspeed (still better than others) but i use Red Pack Personnas in that one exclusively now.
5/3/2010 9:05:47 AM
^ you have the red tip right?i picked up a '51 blue tip in excellent condition on ebay a month or so ago for $rhode islandi thought it was a good deal
5/3/2010 10:28:19 AM
yeah, red tip. i think mine is a 54 or 55
5/3/2010 10:54:29 AM
I've been using Feathers in my Merkur Barber Pole (38HD I believe) and haven't looked back since. It's quite a heavy razor and I love the shave I get in combining the sharpness of the Feather with the heft of the razor. I'd go so far as to say you won't find a closer shave outside of a cutthroat. I guess it's really all about skin texture and personal preference. Oddly enough, I prefer the red pack personas in my Merkur classic which is much lighter than the barber pole, I don't get nearly as close of a shave for the same number of passes but it's still a reasonably close and very pleasant shave.
5/5/2010 12:39:23 AM
Got some Feather blades. These are the real deal for sure. I used to think that a razor blade was just a razor blade, but not any more!
5/16/2010 8:57:43 PM
^Welcome to the club, sir.
5/17/2010 9:40:42 PM
OK. So I've been shaving with a safety razor for a few months now. And if I include an upward pass, I break the fuck out.
6/5/2010 1:53:56 PM
^ what razor do you have? my parker and my merkur both would do that to me, but the gillette tech i have above is smooth as butter ATG/XTG with minimal breakout (usually none, actually)
6/5/2010 5:34:03 PM
I ran into a similar issue in shaving my head, with the grain I wa fine, against the grain I had intense razor burn for several days. I just had to eliminate the against the grain pass altogether.
6/5/2010 8:20:22 PM
I've been considering this for awhile now, but...Currently, I shave in the shower with a Mach 3 Turbo on my cheeks and neck, then finish my chin and upper lip with a Braun electric. Odd, I know, but it seems to work well and keeps the irritation down on my chin and upper lip. I can shave those areas with the Mach 3 (and I sometimes do) but the electric does a better job with less irritation.Unfortunately if I shave with the grain, it doesn't get NEARLY as close as when I shave against the grain. So I shave against the grain every day. I don't know why but it just seem to work best for me. It doesn't always feel wonderful but it is at least smooth.I'm wondering how well one of these older systems would work, going with the grain. Thoughts?

FYI: Barney's in Manhattan has a huge wall of shaving gear on the first floor. It's the only place where I've seen DE razor kits for sale. Also, Man Mur sells styptic pencils.
6/26/2010 6:54:29 PM
^ walmart sells styptic pencils for $0.99

Walmart sells a pack of 10 Personna blades for $1.76
6/27/2010 6:55:20 AM
^^ true^ i saw that when i first started shaving...not the same as the "quality" personnas (not sure if you were kidding or not)
6/27/2010 8:17:51 AM
I didn't know what to make of it since I haven't used Personnas before so I don't know what the package looked like. Started off with a sample pack and then bought a bunch of Derby blades through Ebay.
6/30/2010 5:59:19 PM
going to miami next weekend, noticed they have a The Art of Shaving store at a nearby mall. I'm interested in starting to shave with a safety razor and just wondered if I'm getting ripped off if I buy one of the kits from this store. I live out of the country and getting stuff shipped to me is basically impossible, so thats why i'm looking to pick up everything I need all at once. thanks for any tips
7/10/2010 1:01:23 AM
you'll probably pay a bit of premium but it sounds like that's you're only choice. If nothing else, it should be cheaper than any shipping charges that you'd have to deal with otherwise.
