^^I mentioned this before but IMAX still uses 70mm film for projection and regular 3d uses the shitty digital 2k projection. I went and saw it in the IMAX then saw it in a regular theater and it was soooo blurry compared to the IMAX. So if you want crisp and clear quality go see it in the IMAX.

Just got back from seeing it in 3d.

By far the most amazing movie I have ever seen. Not the best, but the most amazing.

I definitely want to see it again.

Problems with the movie:

How come they never had to reload ever their automatic weapons?

Why did they have bayonets on their automatic weapons?

Where did the big robotic guy at the end find/place a giant knife on the machine?

Did anybody else think it was messed up after Jake and the giant cat lady kissed for the first time, she said they had mated forever?

1) I didn't notice anyone firing an unnaturally high amount of bullets.

2) Because they are fighting creatures that favor close combat.

3)

The thing on the right side under the cockpit

4) They screwed, and are apparently monogamous

^ 1. The entire battle scene on the ground I don't think I saw anyone reload. They had automatic weapons, firing at a couple hundred if not thousand blue cat people but nobody stopped firing. Must be large magz.

2. I can accept that. But, I thought it was weird like they were expecting the red coats to joins sides with the natives and march.

3. Why do they need a knife then if they have bayonet guns? Worst case your still a big ass robot that can over power them, and have the quickness of lebron james in that suit.

4. That sucks that even if you mate you have to be with them for the rest of your life. no options. you think jake was like "fuck I made a mistake"

I am just pointing out minor things and being more of an annoyance. But I don't care.

Interesting article on the science behind Avatar:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34515704/ns/technology_and_science-space/

It also has this statement about the floating mountains:

Quote :
"Just as real-world superconductors can float in the presence of a magnetic field, mountains on Pandora apparently loaded with unobtanium can float in the powerful magnetic pockets that dot the moon's surface"

Five days later I still can't believe how awesome this was, and I will definitely be seeing it in IMAX again. Jim is a genius. The following is a sampling from JC's interview in the latest Maxim:

As a director, you have a reputation for being a screamer.

No, the correct term is "asshole". I don't actually scream. Screaming implies that you've lost control. I yell with highly directed precision. Ninety-nine percent of the time, it's tactical.

How did Titanic change your life?

It gave me permission to fuck off. I had money and I didn't think the directing thing was in jeopardy, so I got involved in a lot of science and deep-sea exploration for about seven years.

As long as you didn't die. (In reference to the previous question asking about his decision to wait to make Avatar)

Exactly. Generally speaking, that should be everybody's goal on a day-to-day basis: Don't die. And you know what the key to that is? Keep on breathing.

Months before its release, Avatar was provoking extremely strong internet reactions.

I think people have recalibrated their expectations to the movie we actually made. Every fan out there was making a movie in his head, and his ultimate movie would be different from the ultimate movie of he fan next to him. Well, this is my ultimate movie, guys, so sit down, shut the fuck up, and watch it.

visually stunning, but got damn did the story suck

I was down with it up until they decided they were going to blow up mecca by outfitting a cargo plane with some mining explosives and fly it in at 5mph

low-tech-beats-high-tech requires a huge ammount of suspension of disbelief any time its done, but avatar was just too much.

The story wasn't that bad. It was interesting enough to keep me totally engrossed and entertained the entire time of the movie. And I mean the entire time. I don't think there was a moment where my focus wavered at all.

^^ I'm sorry to hear that. Usually you can pull it off with the presence of traitors either sabotaging the technology or devising a way for the primitives to get around it (sneak them aboard the space ship where they can slit the throats of the sleeping.

But no, a head-on fielded battle is unbelievable. They can just use mass drivers from orbit. Presumably it is easier to mine an area with the flora of the planet replaced by craters. The best thing about it: the primitives would never know what happened; God just reached down and removed the surface of their planet.

That said, I still can't wait to see the movie.

I think the problem with that is the “flux vortex.” it seems like it would make any kind of electronic guidance unfeasible.

I’m pretty sure their little hair-worm things had to touch, and that connection is deeper than a typical human mating. You can’t really view them in our terms.

Yeah, the part where I didn't really like the movie was the end battle. That required too much suspension of belief from a tactical point of view, and at that point they were just stretching so that the natives could win.

If 10,000 winged bird things land on your ships. They fall out of the ski just by their weight.

The key to that battle is that the marine force isn't that large. Just a few hundred.

Not hard to believe at all

Me neither. One thing I noticed about the human technology was it wasn't THAT advanced. Like in the beginning they still hadn't developed artificial gravity, and their space ship looked similar to something like the international space station, just larger. Not to mention the 6 years of stasis it took to get to Pandora.

They didn't have lasers, or special weapons. It was still bullets and oled screens. This lack of technology made it much more believable than if they had been super advanced.

And the whole end battle was believable. Imagine the flying creatures being the weight of an elephant dropping on a helicopter. Completely believable that they could knock them out of the sky. I mean the ships were basically glorified helicopters. Not much more advanced than now.

I knew the hispanic female pilot would turn sides the instant I saw she was a pilot. Why else would they put a famous actress in that role . I thought Cameron tried to make the movie a little too emotional but I guess some people like that. I don't even think the 3d was that impressive but the CGI was the best I've probably ever seen.

this. i feel like way too many people have an inflated perspective of this movie because of the visuals. yes, it is definitely one of the best looking films ever created, but just like any other movie, eye candy cannot make up for a lackluster plot. and the movie being in 3d did absolutely NOTHING for me. i saw Up in 3d last summer, and that didn't do anything for me either. and while seeing it in IMAX or something would probably be a little more impressive, it still doesn't change the fact that this movie was incredibly lame. you can't just take a story that has already been done before and put it on another planet and try and pass it off as something original.

o hay we know you're a human in one of our bodies and your people are all here to rape our planet of its natural resources. better let you into our society so you can learn our ways. oh and here's some really great looking jungle shit and creatures to make you forget all about the fact that we're ripping off dances with wolves and fern gully.

and michelle rodriguez is bar none one of the worst actors in hollywood. how that woman continues to find work is completely beyond me.

No, for me it was the coordinated assault of tens of thousands of wild animals onto the military from air and land. It was just too high of a suspension of the wilderness revolting against the humans for me not to be like "yeah, whatever, sure". It was entertaining regardless.

It's the planetary network, it's self aware. Is this a stretch in scientific terms? Absolutely, but once established as a part of the background the planet directing the attack didn't require any more suspension of disbelief than dead Obi-Wan talking to Luke through the force.

i can't believe how popular this movie is.....

Just watched it in 3D IMAX. great graphics, good use of 3-D, whoop-dee-do - those didn't save the movie. I could be generous and say it "wasn't bad", but honestly, I cannot recommend it and I would gladly say it wasn't a good movie.

maybe i'll get into the problems with it later, but i'm sure they've been covered. There is not a chance in hell I would sit through this again, i don't care how beautiful the CGI was. I was looking for the exits at the 1.5 hour mark anyway. The battle scene saved the ending. I mean, the action and graphics of the battle scene saved it - the actual acting, story, believably, etc of the battle scene was just as bad as the rest of the movie.

As far as the awesomeness of James Cameron movies, I'd go:
Terminator 2 > Aliens > The Terminator > True Lies > Titanic > Avatar

yes, I would happily watch Titanic on a loop for a full day than suffer through Avatar again
