If you have any IT experience and need a job lead, shoot me a PM and I can try and hook you up. Unfortunately I don't have a whole lot of info on this yet, but I'll try and post more as I find out.

David what staffing agency do you work for?
10/7/2011 7:57:33 AM
10/7/2011 10:15:05 AM
^^ I don't do staffing. I'm a software developer at IBM. We have an open position in my group as well as a sister group.

The other day, I found a hiring tool disguised as a coding puzzle. It was a bit open ended, very interesting, and only required a little javascript hacking.I submitted my solution and surprise, surprise: I got emailed asking how I feel about startups in NYC. Not sure what the hell I was expecting... a well paying company in RTP or something?I'm trying not to even entertain the idea, but it would be kind of sweet.

so, is all of the recruiting for IT positions now going through India, or what? I've gotten several calls from recruiters, and it seems like 5/6th of them are Indian, yet know nothing about IT.
2/17/2012 11:42:38 AM
^I'm pretty sure recruiters select out the worst candidates. Our ratio right now sits at with 30 people referred from a recruiter one was passable. Out of 10 people we've contacted directly on linkedin 2 were passable. Out of everyone we talk to we look for a brain, a pulse, and a soul. You'd be surprised at the combinations you get without one of the three Recruiters have given us developers with 10 years Node.JS experience (only out for 2 years) and candidates that clearly wrote 2 lines of jQuery at some point in their life, wanted $100K - $150K and can't answer basic questions about javascript you'd get from reading a tutorial in a day.(Bubble?)[Edited on February 17, 2012 at 12:45 PM. holyshit... I've written like 4 lines! I should be asking 300k right? lol
2/17/2012 2:02:37 PM
if i were looking to hire somebody and didn't have somebody in mind through former colleagues, i'd probably start with stackoverflow. i've met a handful of recruiters that know what's up, but most of them seem to just blast emails/phone calls to whoever they can find on the internet
2/17/2012 2:20:23 PM
^does anyone regard reputation with any importance? I've always wondered that and have been trying to increase mine recently (it's hard as hell).
2/17/2012 2:24:35 PM
^I generally would look at any presence as favorable and even had the careers invite. I have a fairly high rep on there, but never got any offers from it yet.
2/17/2012 9:34:47 PM
anybody done anything with Rural Sourcing Inc? It's a job, sure, and it's close by, but they seemed a little too enthusiastic about me.

Not worried about certs really ... but I sure want to have someone who know how ccna level stuff works ... Ip addressing, OSI model, local subnet related stuff ... you've got to know it really well.

My company in Cary is looking for a help desk tech to start hopefully in the next few weeks. Entry level position or someone with limited past experience. Experience troubleshooting windows systems and working in windows domains is preferred. Experience with VMware View is a plus but not required. If you are interested shoot me a PM and I will send info for where to send resumes.
2/21/2012 11:58:22 AM
^^ see, I know not to give any thoughts to recruiters, because most of them, when not Indian, don't know whit about what I do, and even then, the most recent Indians haven't been too stellar, either. the actual technical people at this joint are stoked about me, which just seems off. I'm not saying I'm total dogshit, but I don't think I'm anything to get excited about
2/21/2012 11:10:29 PM
^So like "I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member" type deal?I've noticed that the easiest way to detect a scam (e.g. pyramid scheme) is when the people interviewing you spend more time pumping you up about how awesome you are than figuring out what you can actually do. In other words, it's a tip off that they what they really need is to fill seats instead of get shit done.

posting this for somebody. it's in cary, looks mostly using java for a fast growing pharmaceuticals company. if you're interested, let me know

3/26/2012 8:26:11 PM
I'd be more concerned with them equating Word and Excel skills to "IT proficiency."Or focusing on what type of IDE they'd like you to have experience with. But seriously. Why all the fucking java hate. What do you use: Haskell? OCaml? Algol-67?

I need an internship or something as building an online company isn't impressive to some companies.
4/5/2012 10:39:33 PM
I was just being nice. I don't respect java.
4/5/2012 11:36:36 PM
LISP?!?!? Seriously...
4/6/2012 4:18:19 PM
There's a reason its taught as the first language at MIT. I feel like my childhood was taken from me at NC State having to learn Java first.http://xkcd.com/224/http://xkcd.com/297/
4/6/2012 6:03:59 PM
I learned it in AI and I use the term learned very loosely.
4/6/2012 7:17:59 PM
All CS degrees should include a lisp component. It's helpful for learning how to prove stuff, learning about programming concepts, exposes you to alternate ways to think about solving problems and designing languages, and is similar to template meta-programming. If you can't look back and see the value, then you probably aren't working on hard problems.
4/7/2012 5:28:50 PM
Why have I never seen it listed as a primary language at any company I've applied then?
4/7/2012 7:02:15 PM
Strawman and bandwagon fallacies. Why does it have to be listed as a primary language to be important? That's your argument, not mine. Furthermore, most companies are shitty. I couldn't care less about what most companies are doing.

http://paulgraham.com/iflisp.htmlLisp isn't popular because it's too hard for mere mortals to comprehend.http://www.winestockwebdesign.com/Essays/Lisp_Curse.htmlLisp isn't popular because the geniuses who hack with lisp rewrite everything from the ground up.Uh huh. Does every article about lisp really have to start with how all lisp hackers are fucking programming gods?
