Why not free kick? 53 yards...no rush. What is the risk???
I don't understand.

NO, its 53 yards. Its not a "free field goal". Its a "free kick" from the spot where the fair catch occured. 53 yards.

we basically have what some of you wanted. an offense with no quarterback.

although it we'd probably be better off by sitting stones ass and putting another RB in.

JTBUCKY....its a "fair catch free kick"
You are allowed to take a free kick from the spot. Defense has to be 10 yards away from the kick. If you miss, they get the ball where you kicked it.

53 YARDS.

dude, the ball is placed on the 53, u have to still snap the ball, tehy arent gonna put the ball 7 yards ahead of the fair catch spot and then let u snap it to the 53...thats common sense

you HAVE TO SNAP IT 7 yards

53+7=60 yard line

anyone else agree with me?

A fair catch free kick can only be done after a safety... it didn't apply there I don't believe

(And I think it's only in the NFL as well...?)

It may just be an NFL rule. I don't know.
I do know that a "fair catch free kick" is from the spot of the fair catch.

^ Yeah, I'm thinking it is only an NFL rule.

Well, that's just becuase I"ve never seen it done in college. Who knows

Edit: And yes varsity... you're right. No snap, you kick from where the ball is fair caught...

Ok, I don't think its allowed in college. But there is no free kick that is snapped back 7 yards. I think its only allowed in high school and NFL.

"Free kicks following a fair catch are allowed under NFHS & NFL rules, but not NCAA.

Following the legal FAIR CATCH of any kick, the receiving team may choose to run a regular scrimmge play OR they may free kick the ball from the the yardline where the catch was made. Simply stated, a free kick following a fair catch is a kickoff with a chance for 3 pts. For the most part all the rules are the same as for a kickoff (i.e., teams 10yds apart etc.). This is obviously a very rare play and is usually only used at the very end of the first half or the end of the game.

Yep, you're right. No snap... ball is kicked from within one step of the free kick line (Which means you can take a step, you just cant cross the free kick line... better known as the line of scrimmage).

Like you said... there is no snap. It's done like a punt after a safety

I found this....

Quote :
"Rule 6-1-2 . . . A free kick shall be made from any point between the inbounds lines and on K's free-kick line. A punt may not be used for a free kick other than after a safety. Once designated, K must kick from that spot. When a punt is used following a safety, the ball must be kicked within one step behind K's free-kick line. In an emergency, such as a pool of water on K's free-kick line, the referee has authority to move the ball to a playable line. in which case, both free-kick lines are moved to compensate."

But I think it's the high school definition of it.... maybe it doesn't have to be after a safety in the NFL? Anyone know? I thought it did, but your definition doesn't specify it realy...?
