Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Idle Time! What Is It?Essentially Folding@Home uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the Top 100 teams in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the support of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home on it with great results. How can I Help?Download and install the software appropriate for your OS (Windows/Linux/Mac). For dual/quad core computers, be sure you install the SMP client. It will get you and the NCSU team far more points than the traditional client. Whichever client you choose, we recommend running the Folding@Home client as a service. The client will run in the background without notification, and will release CPU resources as needed since it runs at the lowest priority. The NCSU Team Number is 59.Visit the team homepage for detailed installation instructionsWindows ComputersWe recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux ComputersThere are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.Playstation 3PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! So after reading this article about monthly/yearly electric costs from a computer I got an idea http://www.anandtech.com/casecoolingpsus/showdoc.aspx?i=3458&p=2 Yea folding gives bragging rights because of the point totals and all that but curing disease is the ultimategoal. So why cant I write off the cost of electricity for folding from my electric bill as a charitable expense? It seems like if this was permitted that more people would join the cause. With more people folding a cure should come faster. So what did I miss thats obvious to others.
12/19/2008 8:30:57 AM
It's been discussed before on other forums and as I recall it can not be taken as a deduction. This was several years ago. I'm not sure if things have changed since then.

WE SUCK AGAIN!
12/25/2008 2:32:47 PM
all of you guys turning off your shit for break, shame, the numbers are plungingmine's still kicking away, plus it's a good way to keep tabs on the apt with remote desktop and my webcam
12/25/2008 3:01:28 PM
i don't know about you, but i broke my all-time high for most points in a monthand there's still 6 days left in the month[Edited on December 25, 2008 at 7:10 PM. Reason : .]
12/25/2008 7:09:57 PM
My computer was offline for over a month due to hard drive failure
12/27/2008 3:44:22 PM
I'm trying to get my numbers picked back up. GPU client and PS3 are going strong, but the smp client only works if I let it only utilize one of my two cores.
12/27/2008 6:36:56 PM
oh man this is getting bad
12/30/2008 3:35:56 PM
Its only bad because they changed the work units. I have been getting a bunch of low point long churning WU lately. Im still folding with the same equipment that was putting out 8000ppd last month and now I am only getting 5800ppd. Plus with the holiday season alot of people turn their equipment off.
12/30/2008 4:28:23 PM
well the single biggest thing hurting us is a massive drop in alexzogh's numbers. anyone know what the story there is? I've also been slacking some but hopefully I have everything back up now.
12/30/2008 7:11:28 PM
boo I use omega drivers for my ati card and they aren't supported :x
1/18/2009 12:37:55 AM
Well, I had some serious stability problems with my folding rig (dipped <10k ppd for a while :beatup but I think I've got everything working nice again. Cranking about 6-8k ppd from 2x8800GS cards, plus another 9600GSO in my mom's rig and an 8800GTS in my gaming box. All told ~13k ppd right now.Sold my GTX 260 cause I'm just not gaming much anymore so my ppd took a hit there. Finally, as mentioned, the ppd have dropped significantly, we're getting these little crappy WUs these days that just aren't worth as much.Prospero, I may pass you yet one of these days...
1/19/2009 1:46:29 PM
thx for the update manhopefully we can pull back in this thing...
1/19/2009 2:31:34 PM
1/19/2009 3:27:12 PM
Should have kept that GTX...my ppd are suffering, my multiGPU rig just "ain't right" if you know what I mean. The second client keeps halting after it finishes a WU, doesn't turn it in and just sits there with its thump up its @$$ and a sh*t-eating grin on its little square face.GRRRRRR..../beating head against wall
1/20/2009 2:50:45 PM
anyone folding on windows 7? any issues? i presume it works just like Vista but was wondering about any performance gains?
1/24/2009 2:15:56 PM
Bump cause I broke 2 Million points recently
2/6/2009 9:08:39 AM
Congrats yo!
2/6/2009 9:53:45 AM
Well, I finally seem to be getting back into control on this rig of mine. I ditched the second box as it just wasn't working right, focused on my main gaming rig and now have two cards cranking out the ppd steadily. Getting a 9800GTX+ in a few days (c'mon, newegg, ship that card I ordered!) so that will help even more.Who is this P_Scott guy? He's creeping up behind me...And I think I'm finally catching you, Prospero!
2/16/2009 10:29:26 PM
yea, i've had my machine stop folding for awhile, it needs a rest, and i've had to do some video encoding lately, so i've scaled it back a bunch.
2/17/2009 11:07:01 AM
Just to let you guys know, the 9800GTX+ positively rocks for folding. Cranks upwards of 5000 ppd for the 353/384 point WUs and manages nearly 4000 ppd on those hardcore 511 point beasts.I now have this setup:e8400 @ 3GHzAsus P5Q Pro (dual PCIe slots)EVGA 9800GTX+ (4-5k ppd)EVGA 8800GTS (G92, 3-5k ppd, gets hit harder by those heavy WUs)And I have an 8800GS still cranking away in my mother's system. Totaling nearly 13k ppd when I get the right WUs.[Edited on February 25, 2009 at 7:57 PM. Reason : O.o]
2/25/2009 7:54:18 PM
well maybe you can pick up the points i'm dropping i haven't kept up with my systems, but i'm sick of having to constantly replace parts over time since F@H shortens the lifespan it seems.it's been fun! i think i'll trickle some points to 3mil and stop there.
2/26/2009 10:16:54 AM
Reduces lifespan? Seriously? Not that I've noticed. I've been folding for years (look at my history under matt_timmons) and have never suffered a hardware failure.
3/1/2009 12:03:29 AM
Is 1025ppd right for a ps3?
3/5/2009 5:41:34 PM
^^i've been folding since '04 (5 years this month), and i've seen 2 cpu's die early, and multiple gpu fans die early as well... and i buy name brand stuff
3/6/2009 1:23:28 AM
I updated the link on the Stanford page to our 'new' team homepage today:http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=59I can also change the image in someone has something better.I added an ATI HD2400 XT this weekend to the mix. It's the first time I've tried the graphics client, so we'll see it me out any.
3/8/2009 10:01:46 AM
KRUNZBY - good luck with that card, it isn't going to crank many ppd unfortunately. You really need an nVidia G92 or GT200 based card to get enough ppd from the GPU client to be worth the extra heat you'll generate.
3/10/2009 9:54:57 PM
Do you think i would be better off running the SMP client instead? I think it is a 2.4GHz dual core machine. The GPU client uses about 50% of the the CPU anyway.
3/10/2009 10:22:20 PM
I really didn't want to pay for the electricity do this with my quad core, but I put this on my iMac at work
3/16/2009 12:42:40 PM
^how much would it add per month to your bill?
3/16/2009 1:10:40 PM
^ ~$8-$12
3/16/2009 1:17:35 PM
probably closer to $8my dell Q6600/8800GT system pulled 153 watts riunning the smp client (but i dont think i was running cpu at the time)
3/16/2009 1:42:06 PM
It's ok, I have control of over 50 laptops at work, so I pulled out 4 in addition to the imac and I'm running the client on them too. Figured that would offset it.Which client should I run with a DUAL CORE 2.0ghz[Edited on March 16, 2009 at 2:12 PM. Reason : ]
3/16/2009 2:01:27 PM
smp clienthyperthreading and below, run the console client (if that)dual core and greater (coreduo, centrino duo, whatever and up), run smp
3/16/2009 2:33:08 PM
So can you run a GPU and SMP client on the same machine?[Edited on March 16, 2009 at 2:44 PM. Reason : ]
3/16/2009 2:39:22 PM
Also does it matter what SMP client I download, I see two of them.
3/16/2009 3:14:53 PM
^^ yes, it's pretty common (but ive only tried it on a quad core)^the non-deino one
3/16/2009 7:27:11 PM
Definitely SMP on dual-core vs GPU on 2400xt.And if you're running XP the GPU client eats one whole core (interestingly though, running two GPU clients on an XP box also uses 50% also so maybe it's just a reporting issue) so running SMP plus GPU under XP is not recommended.
3/17/2009 2:53:19 PM
Is there anyway I can get my two names merged together?
3/17/2009 5:45:23 PM
Let me also ask, Prospero how many computers are folding on and what kind are they. That's a lot of folding.
3/17/2009 10:50:25 PM
I was folding on up to 7 computers. In the last 2-3 weeks I've stopped. I also buy new parts every 6-12 months for my main gaming computer. So I've experienced multiple failures on 1 computer over time. Most of my gpu fans get noticeably louder after 3+ months of folding and i've had 2 fans stop or slow down (9600GSO, 8800GTS, 8600GT, 8500GT, etc)Some of the cpu's were OC'd which attributed some to shortened lifespan, but 1-2 that were stockclocked failed as well.[Edited on March 17, 2009 at 11:16 PM. Reason : .]
3/17/2009 11:15:11 PM
Oh man, so folding at home has really taken a toll on some of your computers then. That's why I won't put it on my PS3.Also, the GPU fans, where you running the GPU client?Lastly, why does my Folding just quit itself on my quad core without any error messages?[Edited on March 18, 2009 at 8:23 AM. I've also been concerned about running F@H on my PS3 since if it fails, it is an expensive item to replace. I'm not aware of abnormally high failure rates for running F@H on a PS3. The one thing I will say is that our power flickers now and then and if the PS3 gets cut off, then the HDD could get corrupted. I have a power backup attached to it, but it can only last so long. I have had one corrupted HDD so far on my PS3. I had to remove it and reformat it. I can't say F@H caused this, but I would imagine it could have contributed since otherwise my PS3 would be powered down.

3/18/2009 11:06:33 AM
Alright another question, what kind of CPU TEMPERATURES do you guys get while folding?
