he said we have a tough schedule in july...i'm not gonna read anything into that. if you complain about the schedule in october and november then you are making excuses. but i think it's totally reasonable to point out that we do have a tough schedule. nothing to see here, imo

yeah he may be overstating how "great" they are. but assuming the 6 toughest games he's referencing are ND, FSU, Clemson, UNC, UL, Miami then he's right...that's definitely a tough schedule. 3 elite level teams, and 3 legit top 25 contenders.

Not sure if there is a way to embed the video, but DD had a pretty good dig on Fedora.

So +1 credibility. Good for him. He is working his way out of the credibility hole like his overall win deficit.

It sure isn't a conspiracy theory to assume NC State coaches feel jaded by UNCs cheating. I'm sure he feels there is no level playing field in the state of North Carolina

Funny thing is he wasn't complaining when we got the soft schedule pre-ACC last season. If he wants to be great shouldn't he want to play and try to beat some good programs? Anyhow, be interesting to see how he does against ECU. They're actually a step up from the teams we been paying early on in recent years which is saying a lot.

i don't think it was a complaint at least that's not how i took it...i think it was simply an observation he was making. he was simply saying that we have a very tough schedule this year. nothing more, nothing less.

easy now, i think we all like doeren, but us sensitive folk about this issue liked him cause he never spoke like this. he's always had the 'why not nc state, we can beat anyone" mentality. he's not less of a coach for doing it, but just prefer he hadn't. he's correct in his statement, but who cares how tough our schedule is?

^ I think I have made it pretty clear that I do not think he is a good coach, and think he should have been fired after going winless.

But the reason I posted his comments is because it is mid-July, the dead period of sports. What else is there to talk about?

firing a coach after 1 year is definitely the right move and not at all an overreaction. you can argue that he's a bad coach and all that. but wanting a coach fired after 1 year, barring some kind of real NCAA trouble or criminal shit, is not only completely knee-jerk and stupid, but also totally unrealistic to expect that it would ever happen.

i don't get what is bad about Doeren's comment. granted, i haven't seen the context so i don't know what question was asked and what else he said in response to that question. but him saying that we play a tough schedule doesn't equate to him making excuses nor is it the same as him counting those as losses. couple of y'all just seem to be reading way too much into a rather benign comment.

I wasn't the only person who could see that DD was not a good coach after his first year. It's not an overreaction when you can clearly see that someone is in over their head. And rather than waste another 4-5 years spinning our wheels, we could have gotten out in front of it and moved on to the next guy.

But it's in the past and doesn't matter anymore. It was 3 years ago, and he has proven me right. He is clearly not a good coach, and is especially the wrong person for this program. We need someone who is either a great game planner or a great recruiter. DD is bad at both of those.

But he had a good one liner at a mid-summer press conference. So lets try to celebrate his successes before the season starts. +1 credibility.

so what has kept us in games against elite competition?

A. His game planning
B. His recruiting
C. TOB's recruiting

One must have been good for us to play with the top teams in the country and not just get wiped off the field.

We were so flush with talent from TOB's recruiting (especially at the QB position), I can't imagine how he would have won less than 10 games with that loaded roster.

It was the first and only winless conference record since we started putting on pads and helmets in 1892. Must be all TOB's fault.

It's headscratching that people somehow can't give the guy a pass for that year. Nick Saban is going 0-8 with Pete Thomas taking snaps for State. He was barely a D1 quarterback

How can people not see they handed him a pile of dogshit in a bag and told him it was lunch?

Well on top of that don't forget his "guy" that year was a injury prone WR that converted to QB and got hurt on the very first quarter of play in the season. So it's not like even with a healthy QB we could have done very well anyways.

It's not a big deal if it's the trough of a transition that leads up to higher peaks than "barely bowl eligible" and "never sniffing the ACC title." It just needs to pay off eventually.

I'm not making a comment about whether DD is capable of taking us to the promised land, but if he's not I'd take another 0-fer conference season for a guy who was. I'd take extreme shittiness for a chance at extreme goodness any day over a consistently mediocre program.

TOB was able to beat FSU with Daniel Evans and an equally awful team (who only won 2 conference games). And it's more than just the losses. We got smoked in each of those games.

Honestly, that was three years ago. There is plenty of evidence outside of 2013 that shows he just isnt the right guy for us. Hopefully we can move on sooner than later.

Wait, so because TOB pulled a miracle out of his arse you expect the same miracle playing the future #1 pick in the draft at QB in Tally?

What other game did we get smoked in you're referring to? We lost by 8 to Clemson on a horribly blown call when they said Underwood was out of bounds

^^Actually, Clemson beat us 26-14. And they were running away with it.

We lost every game by >10 points, except UNC-CH, who was only able to beat us by 8. And its not like we had a killer schedule. Wake was terrible. UMD, Syracuse, BC and UNC-CH all ended the season 1 game over .500. Not exactly world beaters there.

that was amato.

Saban wouldn't have gone 0-8, but it's not like that matters because no matter what you think of DD we all know now and knew then that he was not Saban and was very likely never gonna be Saban. not that that is the point of this discussion. but we were a bad team. a very very bad team. a better coach probably would've won more games, but it's not like DD squandered a chance at a potentially great season. going 0-8 was, without question, an absolute embarrassment. but you also need to consider the context (no QB, new coach, poor talent, poor depth) and realize that that season is not the sole indicator of DD's coaching ability. sure, you can include that season in your assessment of him as a coach - it would be foolish to ignore it. but it does need to be given context.

Pete Thomas was an Elite 11 QB recruit. Maybe under TOB and QB guru Bible he would have been better?

Still have heard many say that TOB had another QB lined up to play or at least compete before we canned him.

not that it matters in the least, but i've never heard that before ^ about TOB having another QB lined up. TOB recruited thomas to transfer into the program. now, i'd totally buy the argument that we probably win another game or two under TOB that year. but then we'd still have fired him. so...what difference does it make.

Cant believe people are still arguing about Doeren. Doesnt really matter who we bring in we are a 5-7 win team year after year with one random outlier occasionally up or down. Just accept that this is the reality of our program and enjoy our wins over non conference trash and the Wake Forests and BCs of the conference.

^i realize it's nitpicking, but i'd argue we're more of a 6-6/7-5 program with the occasional outlier season. just going back to 1990, we've been to 17 bowls in 26 years...that's hardly great, but it is going to a bowl game more years than not. or just going back to 2000, that's 11 bowls in 16 seasons which is even better.

going back to 1990 we average 6.4 wins per year. again, i realize i'm nit picking, but to say we're a 5-7 team on average means that we usually aren't making bowls. but recent history suggests we do make bowl games more times than not.

You remember that game incorrectly. We were dominating that game till the Blown underwood call... The rails completely came off when they blew that call and we had a shitty punt instead of first and goal on the 5.

We were in great shape in that game... and we still only lost by 12 to a team that was fantastically better than us.
