yea, the GPU2 clients have been pretty screwy lately, i have one stuck on 25,000 of 25,000

now i'm getting these errors:
[19:00:33] Folding@home Core Shutdown: UNSTABLE_MACHINE
[19:00:36] CoreStatus = 7A (122)

you'd think after this long they'd have a beta that at least works 90% of the time, but i'm just SICK of troubleshooting.

I heard on another board they were performing some kind of maintenance on the servers. My ppd were better today after sucking @$$ yesterday.

Hope alexzogh's points come back up, he only turned in like 16k yesterday.

^yeah i stopped running the gpu client on my 8800 because it got so hot. I just run it on my 9600 now, which stays a lot cooler.

Use Rivatuner to turn up your fanspeed. You can usually set it to 60-70% or so before the noise becomes audible over the rest of your system. That will help keep your card much cooler.

yep I've got one of those in the oven

^4 my 8800 runs a little hot anyway (slighty oc'd) and my case has some cramped poor airflow which is the main problem, with the fan at 100% (not really much noisier actually) it brings it down to about max of 85

I am thinking I went from about 47xx ppd to 51xx pd

I have 3 and they have been stable at these setting for two weeks or so.

Let’s fold!

^^nice work, yea, i can't put up the same points you do, i can get to 10k ppd, but then riddled with EUE errors, so i've succumbed to 6kppd for now

^install ntune (for nvidia), go to the performance tab and crank up the frequency until it's stable.

Used to be a contender? Neo, I still have a loooooong way to go to catch up to you. How'd you do it, by the way? I mean, you've got over 4mm points IIRC and most/all of that was collected on the CPU clients. I folded for like three years before the GPU client came out and barely broke half a mil points.

I've still yet to use the GPU client. Back when I was finishing my college years, I was a technician for the local school system. I installed the client on a couple labs of P4s; 2.8ghz. Had like 40-50 concurrent CPUs in my high time. Since then I have graduated, got a decent job, moved away. I suppose they eventually reimaged the systems and slowly my numbers died off.

Haha, one of the labs was noticeably hotter than the rest of the school... like 10-15 degrees. No one could explain why , good times.

my contributions are definitely gonna have to cut back I think, we got a kill-a-watt and after the math it is a significant monthly change on the utility bill to keep the thing going constantly, I'll probably just fold when the comp is up doing other things

might not go over our package allotment but we went over for september just from general use and air conditioning

yeah it probably wouldn't be an issue if we could drop the thermostat, but we'd have to convince one of the roommates that adjusts it a lot

Sure you did the math right? Shouldn't be THAT much. I think when I ran the numbers it was something like 200 Watts = 11-12/month. how many watts is that pc pulling, and would it be on all the time even if it wasn't folding?

I have been experimenting with using folding computers as heaters and so far with the downstairs set at 72 and up stairs only using 2 folding computers for heat, the up stairs stays around 74. This cut my gas bill in half because I am only using one heater. It did raise my energy bill by $10 but that is still an overall saving of over $100.

When it gets colder outside I may need to turn on the heat up stairs eventually. But for now folding is paying me!

With both the SMP and GPU clients running full bore my computer pulls 280 Watts(mainly due to my hog of a gpu), and if I was not folding the computer would be in 'sleep' whenever I was sleeping or not at home using it, so using next to no power at all most of the time versus 280 W all the time. Given that difference it would be probably an extra $14 a month which my roommates would not want to divvy up considering that I am the only one folding. Between the fact that I am a broke college student and that we already were paying overages in September from just regular usage, folding is not something I am going to pay extra just to do.

Yes I realize that the thermostat affects the bill a lot more but thermostat wars can get ugly.

^^ so he doesn't want to have to pay a mere $7 a month for your folding, but you have to pay half of his $texas from moving the thermostat all the time? i think you're getting gipped

we understand, plz to come back when you're able tho

The thermostat never really gets moved drastically, it's just the whole principle of 'oh i'm cold,' lets turn it up a little instead of puttin on more clothes, or I'm hot, lets switch on the AC instead of throwing off the covers.

Ideally if we could keep the downstairs in the mid-to-upper 60s it would solve the problem, and we haven't really discussed it, so there's still the possibility. But until then, I'm cutting back.

ok so i bought this machine: message_topic.aspx?topic=548445

and it has 2 PCI-E slots so I was gonna put a couple video cards in it and let it fold away.

what video cards are good for this board? is this on of those ATI only or NVIDIA only boards, or can I use either? I was thinking about 9600GSOs but I'll have to consult the chart again

dang, that's a nice price on a good rig.

it's an intel chipset so you can use either ATI or Nvidia, for folding purposes though i'd stick with nvidia

8800gs
8800gt used or rebate deal
9600gso
9800gt (i think these are about the same price as 8800gt, ~$100 AR)

heck yeah i couldn't turn down that deal, the 2X PCI-E was a nice bonus. I need to irder those video cards pronto since there isn't anything on board.

hell if anyone has a pci-e i could buy/borrow so i can set the thing up that would be helpful.

so that computer i bought has this power supply:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817103940

which lists two 6 pin PCI-E Power Connectors...but so far all I see is one 8 pin connector (not sure if thats a newer pci-e or something else). whats the 8 pin for?

im hoping that when i look at it again tonight that i'll find these two 6 pin connectors.

^^8-pin is the newer PCI-E standard, my 9800GX2 requires 1x 6-pin and 1x 8-pin

except that PSU is modular, meaning if he didn't keep the box with all the cables, you may not have the cables installed. also that PSU doesn't have an 8-pin, so i'm assuming you're talking about the 8-pin (2 square 4-pin connectors side-by-side) CPU power cable

I see what you mean by modular now, I unhooked one plug and was able to plug in a 6-pin for my PCI-E card. And I have a 2 molex ---> 6 pin PCI-E for the second video card so I should be fine (can't find another 6-pin cable). But there is definitely a 8 pin in there, not two 4-pins side by side. Maybe the guy selling the PC has the model # wrong, I'll check into it.

I picked up this card yesterday for #1: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1022251 so I'll keep shopping for #2.

But a weird thing happened. I pulled an XFX 8800GT out of my Q6600 Vista Dell and put it in the "new" PC with a fresh install of XP and it's only getting 3800 PPD vs the 4500 PPD it was getting in the Dell.

There are a few of differences in one system to the second though:

1) Q6600 with 1 SMP running vs E6600 with 1 SMP running (CPU getting more use on the new machine)
2) Vista SP1 vs XP SP3
3) I had that CUDA thing installed on the Vista machine but I thought that didn't matter anymore...

why do you guys think it's getting less points?

Unless I missunderstood, on the q6600 the smp is using 2 of the 4 cores and the gpu is using one of the othes (you can add a regular console client to the left over core for another 400-600ppd). Where as with the e6600 the smp and gpu are fighting for processing power on one of the cores. So both the smp and gpu on the e6600 should be getting less ppd.

I tried the same thing on my e6600 and my smp dropped from 2200 ppd to 1300ppd and the gpu dropped from 4500 to 3000 ppd. So I ended up getting higher ppd using the gpu and console client together for about 5000ppd.

kinda late on this, but all you SMP users, they have a "new" drop-in executable that's supposed to help with the EUEs. I just had one and came across this:

I'm adding a second 9800GT to that box I bought. It's currently got a E6600 in it, and I noticed that when I installed a console client my PPD on the video card dropped ~20% so I stopped it from running. For some reason I remember seeing 50% CPU consumption by that first GPU2 client. Hopefully I'm not remmebering correctly. We'll see if this addition of the second GPU2 client drops the PPD on the first GPU2 client.

Anyone here run two GPU2 clients on a E6600ish based system?

Thanks for the link a few days back. I finally got my smp at work to finsh a WU with out the error message.

Did you remember to specify which core the console should use. Maybe they were fighting for the same core leaving the other unused. One core at 100% and the other near 0% will net a 50% usage in taskmanager.
