Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Idle Time! What Is It?Essentially Folding@Home uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the Top 100 teams in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the support of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home on it with great results. How can I Help?Download and install the software appropriate for your OS (Windows/Linux/Mac). For dual/quad core computers, be sure you install the SMP client. It will get you and the NCSU team far more points than the traditional client. Whichever client you choose, we recommend running the Folding@Home client as a service. The client will run in the background without notification, and will release CPU resources as needed since it runs at the lowest priority. The NCSU Team Number is 59.Visit the team homepage for detailed installation instructionsWindows ComputersWe recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux ComputersThere are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.Playstation 3PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! ^congrats! So here's some of the latest milestones....First time our top 20 has all been over 1000+ppdFirst time our Average PPD for a team is 2000+ppd/active userOur top 2 users produce roughly 43% of our daily total. Our top 10 users produce about 75% of our daily total.Six users with over 6,000+ppd10 users over 3,000+ppd20 users over 1000+ppd70+ active users each month. In the last 3 months, we’ve gone from 2 million points/month to 4 million points/month.We also now have 10 users over the 1 million point mark. Our team has just surpassed 40 million in points, averaging nearly 140,000 ppd.[Edited on October 13, 2008 at 11:15 AM. It has been 5 years since this thread was started, so I reason our team was formed around that time. And according to this stats website http://www.hardfolding.com/fh_stats/index.php?pz=101&tnum=59 we will double our current points in less than a year. IMO mostly due to the smp/gpu2 combo everyone is running now.[Edited on October 13, 2008 at 4:09 PM. Reason : spelling]
10/13/2008 4:07:52 PM
is there a way to sort the team by OS? I'd like to see who the PS3s are and what their contributions are like.I'm averaging around 1000-1050 a day w/ the PS3 and my crappy laptop combined. I hoping that if i kill the laptop, i'll have to buy a new macbook pro tomorrow
10/13/2008 6:11:35 PM
The PS3s are terrible compared to modern GPUs

Just put up two OCed Conroes both running SMP + GPU clients (8800GTX + HD2400 Pro) Sucks my two year old home machine is running a 7950 which isn't supported.. guess I could load up the SMP client. What PPD is the SMP client pushing? It's an OCed Windsor. I could run the SMP client on the laptop at work as well since I doubt the nvidia card in there is supported.
10/14/2008 2:31:28 PM
^ awesome, whats your username?in my experience the smp anywhere from 500-600 to 1700-1800 PPD (that ranges from my weak core duo to my stock Q6600) and higher depending on your proc.
10/14/2008 2:43:01 PM
Well I had been using admitche since back well in the day, but I just started using Lavim.Hmm that's not bad - I'll start up SMP on the laptop and secondary home machine when I get a chance.Sucks, but running the GPU and the SMP on my work computer slows the machine down to a crawl.. I can only run one. Strangely enough the GPU client appears like it is going to be really bad PPD on this card (the HD2400). I'm thinking about just running the SMP client instead.

just added a 9600GSO to the mix, and yesterday had my first 10,000ppd overall in a long time.i have the following folding right now:E6850E84009800GX2 (only folding on 1 core)9600GSO Quadro FX 570i have one E8400 that still gets EUE's. i also had to stop folding on my laptop just got it back from RMA. it was dead. they replaced the system board, thermal pad, and power cable luckily it was only an E2160 that averaged 750ppd, but still[Edited on October 14, 2008 at 4:10 PM. Been a while since I visited here. I see we're closing on #78 -- that's an all-time high, right?I have these guys folding away currently.e8400 + 8800GTS 512MBOpt 165 + 8800GSe4500 + 8800GSX2 3800 + 8800GT (just started tonight)I also have two more 8800GS/9600GSO ready to go, just have to assemble on my IP35Pro with e6400 and figure out how to run dual sessions on one system. Should be able to break 20k ppd once I get all this running.Just a note, loved that table showing relative performance/$ or W, good stuff. These 8800GS/9600GSO are the shit for value, I have gotten mine (4 of them) priced from $35-$80 after rebates and wow, they crank out the ppd.

17,760 points in the last 24 hours, woohoo! And I still haven't swapped my new GTX 260 for 8800GTS or gotten my 2x9600GSOs running...yet...heh...Hmm...need another dual PCIe slot board. One with GTX260 + 9600GSO and the other with 8800GTS + 9600GSO. Then all of my cards will be utilized...just takes money...

Hey, Prospero, get that GX2 folding on both cores!
10/16/2008 11:05:35 PM
hahaha, i just came in here to post that i just setup 2 consoles for my 9800gx2i have both set to 85%, i don't' feel comfortable to up the % with my success at burning up components to do it on my primary gaming card.
10/17/2008 12:24:15 AM
i can tell you right now i'll get another 4,000 ppd from adding this 2nd core. [Edited on October 17, 2008 at 12:42 AM. Reason : fahmon]

Well there goes my chance of ever catching you! Oh well... its for the good of the team.
10/17/2008 7:26:57 AM
What instructions did you follow to get two clients running on the same system? That's what I'm going to need this weekend, gonna try to get my 2x9600GSO cards on an IP35Pro with an e6400 crunching but not sure how to enable two clients. May break 25k ppd if I can get it working.EDIT: Found what I needed here: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1032943617&postcount=5[Edited on October 17, 2008 at 11:54 AM. Reason : ~]

Sweetness...Picked up an X38 board (ASUS P5E64-W Pro) with 4 PCIe slots...4GB DDR3...Corsair 750TX. Already have 4x8800GS/9600GSO cards & an Antec 300 case. Once I get this thing put together I should crank about 18k ppd from that one box, plus my main rig with GTX260 (6k) and a rig I'm giving my mother with an 8800GT (5k) and finally an HTPC with 8800GTS (5.5k). Once I get this all working I should collect nearly 35k ppd.Now I just need to figure out a way to get paid for crunching...
10/18/2008 12:08:56 AM
dang, you'll also need to start using some sort of new cooling solutions as well, especially in the 300 case
10/18/2008 12:53:37 AM
The 300 has a 120 rear exhaust and another 120 top exhaust, I think. The 750TX features a 140 fan to pull through heat and if I'm not mistaken I can mount another pair of 120s in the front to cool the GPUs. Should be enough.Hit 20k points today. Woohoo!!
10/18/2008 2:13:27 AM
Wow, great work. Someday I hope to have some cash to get something that puts out more than 150 PPD besides the PS3.
10/18/2008 6:04:16 AM
damn. i had that stupid life with playstation update come down a month ago, and left it running on the "life channel" (didn't know there were multiple channels) so i wasn't getting any points for the team then i read i had to switch to the folding channel by "hold square, and while holding square press down on the D-Pad to highlight the Folding channel, and then release square."i just assumed on restart it would run under my credentials. it almost like the buried the real folding@home appllication under this life with playstation BS (which folds, but for team 0 i guess)
10/21/2008 11:02:47 PM
I probably have the same problem. I couldn't even find any F@H info in "Life".
10/22/2008 9:25:29 AM
did u do this once you got into life with PS?
10/22/2008 6:00:03 PM
Life should fold under a team just fine. Just make sure you set it up.I folded a bit on my macbook pro. I wonder what kinda ppd it can muster. w/ a laptop cooling stand it stayed surprisingly cool at minimum laptop fan speed.
10/22/2008 10:59:44 PM
Well, I got 3 of my four 8800GS/9600GSO cards folding this evening in my new rig. Fourth I will have to get back from my mom's rig when I switch her stuff out (8800GTS won't fit in my new motherboard, barely have room for four GS/GSO cards). So I now have these cards crunching: GTX 260, 8800GT and 4x8800GS/9600GSO. Should add the 8800GTS shortly once I swap gear around a bit. Also have a 9600GT laying around...hmmm...
10/23/2008 12:36:03 AM
i think most people would be happy with ONE of those cards,

10/27/2008 10:51:04 PM
Does anyone need some spare parts to get a rig folding? I have some older cases, video cards, optical drives, an AMD ~2200+ etc? I'm looking for 3.5 to 5.25 adapter rails and a 2.5 enclosure.
10/27/2008 11:41:02 PM
Broke the 1,000,000 mark today!Actually quite a while ago, if I include my points from previous work under Matt_Timmons...I'm closer to 1.5MM points...but on this userID I just joined the millionares' club!
