^^ he admits that he hasn't read the corresponding article

people are upset because he doesn't fit their preconceived notion of what a terrorist is supposed to look like

the pictures on the previous page of examples of that seem to be news magazines...maybe rolling stone is trying to be taken more seriously? i dunno

nobody has an issue if the day the catch the guy he's plastered on the front of newspapers, because its news

i dunno, i kind of see what you're saying, maybe it would be more appropriate if they did do a story and the cover picture was a mugshot or something

i'm not too up in arms about it, but i completely see why lots of people are

this magazine cover's style is glamorizing him. i think that is why people have a problem with it (and rightly so)

"The cover of their magazine" is not reserved for celebrities or good people.

I'll take a cover that challenges people and provokes thought over another bland Terry Richardson portrait of Jay-Z or Robin Thicke any day.

Nice buzzword that literally everyone opposed to this is using but I really don't see the glamour. It's a noisy low quality photo.

Would it be OK if the guy was unattractive?

Too bad people like thegoodlife are only upset because this is a liberal publication being attacked.

If a conservative publication had "glamorized" a terrorist he would be all over it-

One of the most disturbingly hypocritical users on this site.

In a way, I have to agree. Not from some sort of racial standpoint (if only he was brown!)... The disheveled Unabomber on the cover, I doubt you get the same reaction. A kid who looks like someone you know from school, in some sort of j.Caldwell style photo does not scream terrorist.

maybe that's why the type of people that post on golo are upset, but that's not why some people have an issue with the cute selfie that RS decided to put on the cover (instead of embedding it in the article). it's not a big deal, but i don't understand how you can't see why some people would see this as "glamorizing" a murderer. have you not seen the "free travon" websites with teenagers saying "sure, he murdered and mangled a bunch of people, but he looks so cute!"

of course, RS calculated this controversy, and it'll probably pay-off.

that said, i'll be reading the article. but I would have despite the cover, if I was made aware of it.

^^ again, the cover photo is a companion to the article written. it goes into great detail how a seemingly normal teenager (the kind who take selfies, which is probably all of them), became the fucking asshole he became

that's the whole reason for the photo that they chose

but monsters are monsters. you can't be good and then become bad. similarly a bad person can't become good.

this is how the world works.

^^^i understand that. but putting the cute selfie on the cover does "glamorize" a mass murderer. and RS knew that when chose to put that pic on the cover. and part of choosing that pic was because of the controversy they knew they'd ignite. again, if the pic was just embedded in the article, i'd think that anyone complaining would be "fucking stupid", as you concluded. i know i'm making it a bigger deal by just explaining why some people think it was poor judgement by RS, but i just don't understand why you think that everyone who thinks it was poor judgement by RS is "fucking stupid" and is upset because they wish he looked more like an evil terrorist.

I don't know that id chose the word glamorize... I get why people claim that it is, I get why people claim that it isn't. I think what it does is 'humanize' a monster.

Because it humanizes something that people didnt want to see as human, its an unsettling image... because it goes against our preconceived notions, that the guy next door is a terrorist. Which, I'm pretty sure that's the intent.

Without a consideration of the context, the humanization easily can be perceived as "glamorizing"... It doesn't elicit rage, therefore, we must rage at the source.

With all of that in mind, I wouldnt have put it on the cover, but inclusion with the article, absolutely.

fixed this for you

this faux outrage is fucking stupid

Murders, terrorists, and criminals have been gracing the covers of magazines for decades with little-to-no public outcry. Yet b/c a cover photo isn't damning enough it's all of a sudden a big deal.

For the first 25 or so years of existence, political reporting was one of the key elements of Rolling Stone. It's where Hunter S. Thompson did a good bulk of his writing, including some of the best coverage of the rise and fall of Richard Nixon that exists. It was only in later years that they started straying away from that to try and cater more to the MTV market. Recently they have started returning to their roots with more stories like this one. I understand the outrage, but the mayor's letter is a little silly. I doubt Rolling Stone has any interest in running feel good stories about survivors and heroes. Those are great stories no doubt, but aren't adding anything to a serious discussion about Islamic radicalization and terrorism, which is more in line with the kinds of things Rolling Stone has always covered.

Hello? um if we all stop talking about it then the outrage goes away. Then there is nothing to talk about. Or we can continue to talk about this non-news event as though it affects anything.
