I just don't understand what's being denied. I ran into someone the other day who was a denier. I wound up pushing this dichotomy on him:1. The Earth actually has something that controls the temperature at some value (Gaia theory)2. Adding greenhouse gas budges the temperature (but not much)Basically, I got a "shrug" from the guy, and a resignation to #2 as if he had never thought about it.Come on people. The majority of the deniers (not necessarily the people who post, but maybe the lurkers) aren't even holding a self-consistent theory. A dismissal of any causal relationship between adding heat and temperature of the planet is a god damn brain fart. How the fuck do you think heat works? It wouldn't be so bad if deniers were consistently at #2. I can always deal with position #2. You think the water vapor feedback is overestimating future temperature change? Great! I also could use to brush up on thermodynamics of humidity. It's not obvious at all.But they're not consistently at #2. Even when I'm on a forum with educated deniers, they say things that slip them back to #1. They still internally hold it, and it comes out from time to time. The denier reporting constantly touches back to #1, and the less educated the audience, the more it happens. It's just not acceptable. Adding heat raises temperature. A change in heat translates to a change in temperature by heat capacity. I wouldn't even call this science. It's self-consistency. The alternative is the kind of logic that explains lightning with Thor. The universe is big confounded machine! I can see Abe Simpson saying this.

Earth deviates from the phase boundary in both directions. A large amount of our ice is well below its freezing temperature. To say that the phase boundary makes the functional heat capacity coefficient of the system smaller should be perfectly correct. In the long run the heat capacity won't matter, only the heat balance. But we're still a long away from equilibrium.

please then, tell me more about how ice can't be colder than 32 degrees. I'd love to hear about how all ice is 32 degrees. i'm also curious to hear your thoughts on system boundaries and how we can just totally put them wherever
8/9/2013 5:22:51 PM
please show me where i said ice was never colder than 32 degrees. this is the most blatant strawman i've ever seen on here, and that's saying a lot.
8/9/2013 8:26:59 PM
you either don't know that ice can be colder than freezing or you never learned where to draw a system boundary

The part about religion isn't exactly wrong. The subject is quite dogmatic and ideological on all sides. just sayin...either way, that study sounds like horseshit on its surface. If you're conservative, you are likely to watch FoxNews and not believe in global fearmongering. if you're liberal, it's the opposite. wow, conservatives like conservatives and liberals like liberals. stop the presses!to be fair, smath, the statement "add heat to ice and some of it melts" is somewhat akin to saying that all ice is at 32F, since (assuming atmospheric pressure) ice melts at 32 degrees. Thus, if the ice is able to melt, it must be at 32F in this scenario. But, that's a little semantic, as one would have to construe your statement as "if you ever add any heat to any ice, some it will melt," which I think is a bit of a stretch.[Edited on August 9, 2013 at 9:09 PM. damn, you totally missed the pointswing and a miss, bro
8/9/2013 9:10:13 PM
but that's not what i said. i said "ice water" which implies there is some liquid water and some ice existing together.

except for the fact that it's more of a "this is a checklist full of talking points we would like to implant in your brain" than a headline

What the fuck is a 'Slim Down'? Sounds like some Frank Luntz Linguistic bullshittery to me...Just look over the page and see how many times "Shut Down" is replaced with what I guess they feel obscures this Republican boondoggle tantrum.[Edited on October 1, 2013 at 7:43 PM. pretty smart of them to use the word slimdown instead of shut down seeing how it is a slimdown and not a shut down
10/1/2013 8:17:54 PM
Well fuck, I guess the Republicans didn't get what they wanted after all since they spent months and months claiming that a government shut down was their goal from the beginning...

wut?...lol

It's so cute that they're using diet terms when people are suffering. As if the services that have been shut down are "extra fat."[Edited on October 2, 2013 at 7:57 PM. Reason : bla]

But that's exactly how they've groomed their viewers/base to see government. It also shields Republicans from any culpability.
