^^Live electronica is waayyyy different than shit like Skrillex and Tiesto.
9/16/2011 11:50:48 PM
Just wanted to let you know that you're talking to 2 dudes that work in a record store, before you embarass yourself further. Not trying to be a dick about it, but I kinda expected you to go on about how "tight" Umphrey's McGee is...
9/17/2011 3:16:39 AM
How is this any goddamned different than Phish? How?
9/17/2011 3:21:50 AM
^^^Probably, but Skrillex and Tiesto specifically were what was being initially discussed. So I don't really understand what you're saying. I do agree that the jammy electronic stuff (Umphrey's, Bisco, etc.) is very different from the rave stuff like Skrillex and Tiesto. There is a decent amount of crossing over between those two fanbases, though. In any case, I don't like any of the artists mentioned in this post.^ They definitely share the huge similarity that people go to their shows largely because of the drugs. I will say that Phish are much better musicians (even if sometimes boring) than probably all of that school of electronic acts.[Edited on September 17, 2011 at 9:27 AM. Reason : p]

this dude i went to law school with was all about some Disco Biscuits, so i gave them a try once....once was by far enough. godalmighty.
9/17/2011 9:30:48 AM
I have a few friends that are into STS9 and Disco Biscuits. Last year at Moogfest, I watched about 90 seconds of Disco Biscuits and peaced the fuck out; same with STS9 at this past year's Bonnaroo. Now, I'm always trying to come up with inventive new reasons why I can't go when they invite me to "just come check 'em out" whenever they're playing somewhere close. I don't just wanna be a dick and say "because they suck," but they know I'm not a fan of those bands.
9/17/2011 11:02:06 AM
^ that's the same way my friend was -- i think a lot of it is the culture among that crowd, as if they need to show a sense of loyalty to those acts because they've been openers for their favorite jam bands, etc...... or perhaps they really do think they're good, i don't know.there doesn't seem to be a lot of objectivity among that lot, based on my limited, and completely anecdotal experience.

Anyone else going to Lupe Fiasco and Tinie Tempah tomorrow at the Downtown Amphitheater? First time seeing both, but a huge fan of Lupe's stuff and I've really enjoyed Tinie Tempah since he was a free song on Tap Tap Revenge 3. I'm hoping for a good show tomorrow!

^^i'll be at lupe. I've seen him before and he put on a pretty high energy show.
9/17/2011 7:46:43 PM
Just got back from Neon Indian at 506. Highlight of the night was these two underage bros fighting stage left. Lots of punches to the face between the two and the kid that started it that was obviously under the influence of who knows what got tossed hard.
9/18/2011 12:29:46 AM
how was girls? sorry i missed that.
9/18/2011 8:52:11 AM
^ no shit -- would like to hear that review myself.pissed i couldn't make it
9/18/2011 9:01:07 AM
Also on Vetiver/Fruit Bats. I bet that wasn't too shabby of a show. And I will say that they need to bump up the security at 506, because those kids were going at it for a good while with no intervention. There were a few other kids breaking it up randomly (only to have them get back at it over and over), but if it hadn't been for them, somebody would've gotten seriously hurt. And it's not like they check for weapons or check bags in these venues either. Oh, and yes, the sound at 506 was lacking. They checked every piece of equipment Neon Indian had up there only to have his mic not work for half a song. [Edited on September 18, 2011 at 1:21 PM. Reason : k]

im getting the impression that the 506 is going through some dark times. wtf is going on there.
9/18/2011 2:03:48 PM
The 506 sucks. I don't think the sound is as bad as some do, but that's just me. Aside from that, there's no green room, a tiny bar, and a bad layout, not to mention bizarre things like deducting from the band's take of the door for guests even when the show's sold out. If it were a new place, it would've gone under already.
9/18/2011 4:58:38 PM
Neon Indian himself bumped into us to get more front row for Com Truise. LOL.

Random question, but what time can bands play at the Raleigh ampitheater? I thought it was 11pm, but it might be 10. Anybody know?
9/20/2011 2:54:55 PM
In other 506-related news, Glen Boothe has been added as the talent buyer for Motorco. I think this is excellent news for Motorco, as the talent they book at 506 is on-par with what can be achieved at Motorco; not quite as good as the Cradle's, but maybe only because of capacity limitations. I don't have a whole lot of information on this, but it seems like a lot of articles claim that Tamplin leaving Motorco was a bad thing. I saw it as that he might have been a detriment to Motorco and I don't think his leaving was ever a bad thing. I saw it as him resigning because he knew he was in over his head there...[Edited on September 21, 2011 at 1:05 PM. Reason : k]

9/21/2011 4:06:13 PM
Okay cool. It's nice to have someone reaffirm this, because the dude literally booked Luego for 4 straight weeks in a row. LOL.
9/21/2011 5:13:52 PM
Yeah, that's all true. Tamplin's got great local contacts, he's a really nice guy, and he does everything he can to treat bands well. Unfortunately, none of that changes the fact that Frank & Glenn have been booking national acts for 20+ years, or that Paul at Kings has played everywhere in the country and knows everyone worth knowing.Motorco is a cool room, but it's a new room and it's big, and therefore it doesn't have the luxury of allowing a booker time to grow into a new market. On the upside, LB/LB had really fallen off while Tamplin was at Motorco, to the point where the bills were so uninteresting that I didn't go at all for at least four months. Things are getting back to where they were before, and that's good for everyone.
9/21/2011 5:26:53 PM
holy fucking fleet foxesi mean, damn. despite the rain, and despite their set being cut short by the flooding and PA getting fried, it was one of the most memorable concert experiences i have ever had.
9/22/2011 12:02:03 AM
picked up friends from it, they were freaking outgot on facebook, everyone else is freaking outmust have been pretty great
9/22/2011 12:07:00 AM
^^did they stop then after the break? i'm super lucky my phone survived that shit. thought it was broken bc the volume wasnt working til it completely dried...anyway it was definitely memorable. i will never forget a fleet foxes live show now.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 12:07 AM. Reason : l]

fuck metoo much raini thought it would be delayed a day or something
9/22/2011 5:37:00 AM
Okay, so they did stop when they said they were just taking a break; according to their Twitter, anyway.
9/22/2011 9:52:02 AM
Anybody going to the Carrboro Music Festival tomorrow? We moved here about a month ago and have never been to this. I certainly don't know a single band on the list, but just curious if any of ya'll were making it out there or have checked it out before.
9/24/2011 6:18:53 PM
So, The Antlers were so much better than I would've thought. I mean, I like their records, just wasn't sure how it would translate live...It translated really well. A lot more synth-driven than one might expect.
9/24/2011 6:23:14 PM
You know those reunion tours that are a huge let down and just make you sad because everybody's old, just going through the motions, and they're either really sloppy or really bored or both? Yeah, The Olivia Tremor Control was the exact opposite of that. Soooooo good. Wish I'd had the cash for Black Foliage on vinyl.Casbah was pretty nice, btw. I hadn't been there before.
9/25/2011 6:11:34 AM
^ /jealous
9/25/2011 8:50:49 AM
The Casbah will hardly ever book a good act. Look at their schedule if you don't believe me. Plus the "private club" thing always irritates me when it's not for reasons like the 506 has to be a "private club."Anyway...If you guys didn't know, Human Eye, Spider Bags and Whatever Brains are playing a show at the Pinhook tomorrow night. It's $7 and presented by Bull City Records.
9/25/2011 6:08:29 PM
They're a club for the exact same reason that 506 is.
9/25/2011 8:29:47 PM
Mr Scrumples has a complaint about a Triangle venue? Shocking.
9/25/2011 8:37:50 PM
saw wilco tonight at merriweather post pavilion. pretty good show. started out pretty heavy on stuff from the whole love (to be expected), sky blue sky, and wilco (the album). got a few more songs from YHF, summerteeth, and being there towards the end though. they didn't play any of the real stinkers from their more recent albums, which was nice.
9/26/2011 12:22:53 AM
There are 3 music venues within literally 3 blocks of Casbah that don't charge for memberships to be a private club. There's also the Whiskey, which is a "private club," but has never charged membership except to go upstairs to drink premium liquors and be overall cooler than most. There's no rule dictating that the Casbah must be a private club and charge people to be members. It's all of their own volition to charge people to be members; assumably because they know they book bullshit for seniors and clueless motherfuckers who worship alt country. The Local 506 is governed by a Chapel Hill ordinance. Not sure I'm following your logic, but I've been wrong before, so by all means, use your knowledge and Internet me. Also, I'm sorry you like Olivia Tremor Control.[Edited on September 26, 2011 at 1:27 AM. Reason : clearly being trolled here...]
9/26/2011 1:13:15 AM
All bars are governed by a North Carolina law stating that if you sell liquor but not food, you must be a private club. It's been this way for nearly ten years. Where has Scrumples been?
9/26/2011 9:12:44 AM
The issue is with charging people to be members. Could care less about semantics here. The Casbah has never had, nor probably will have a show worth being a member for.
9/26/2011 12:29:07 PM
how is gang gang dance live?contemplating a show this weekend because ive got shit else going on
9/26/2011 12:36:06 PM
Also just noticed membership at Casbah is 3 dollars lifetime, so before you go on saying anything, it was my understanding that it was more. I believe they changed it. I think my booking argument still holds water though.
9/26/2011 12:40:27 PM
9/26/2011 9:06:42 PM
Well they need to break the law or book better shows. Speaking of good shows tonight:Cut Copy/Washed Out
9/28/2011 12:28:26 AM
few songs in life are as fun to experience live as Hearts on Fire. new Cradle is 1000 times better.and Gang Gang Dance is good live btw
9/28/2011 9:35:21 AM
I feel like Matt and Kim stole the show when they opened for Cut Copy at the Cradle a couple years agoDidn't help that Cut Copy stopped for a good 25 minutes in the heart of their set due to 'technical difficulties' aka backing track issues and didn't play a note.Don't understand the fuss around those guys to be honest
9/28/2011 3:28:13 PM
^lol, matt and kim is seriously the worst live "band" i've ever accidentally seen (ariel pink a close 2nd)Yeah, Cut Copy killed it last night. I agree with Tommy about "Hearts on Fire" and "Lights and Music" is just as amazing live. So many good songs, so fun live.
